Petite Women Carrying Multiples
After much deliberation, my husband and I have finally decided to attempt conception through IVF. However, he has concerns about my health and the health of our unborn child(ren) in the event that I become pregnant with twins. WE have not decided whether to have one or two embryos transferred. I want to transfer two, just because it increases our chances, but he is worried that my small size will create risks. I am just under 5 feet tall, weigh about 110-115 pounds, and I wear a size 6 shoe. Are there any other petite moms of multiples or health care providers who can shed some light on the subject with your own experiences? My younger sister (who is about my same size, but heavier) is prego, and her doctor has already told her that she will probably have to undergo a c-section, so I have already accepted that as a possibility, even with a single baby.

I am also under 5ft tall and have a small frame. I carried twins but was put on bed rest. I ended up having my twins 5 weeks early. They were healthy and came home wth me. Baby A weighed in at 6lbs 1.5oz and Baby B was 6lbs 4oz. Needless to say my tummy will never be the same but they are so worth it.

My sister-in-law is a bit taller than you at 5 ft and maybe an inch or two. She weighed about 105 and wore a size 5 when she had IVF. They implanted three embryos and two took. She carried her boy and girl to 36 weeks no problems. She had them naturally. With twins they tend to be smaller and then they are easier to deliver. Her twins were 3lbs 11oz and 4lb 3oz. She gave birth easily in a very short time.
My great grandmother was 4'9" and had her first baby at 14. She gave birth to 9 or so kids....two sets of twins. She was a twin herself. All of her children survived to adulthood except one.
I think you and your husband are little too concerned. With todays technology the doctors will monitor you so well the chance that anything goes wrong is slim to none.
I'm 40 years old having my third child. I had two miscarriages between the second and this one. Turns out I have a gene mutation that causes blood clots. I inject a blood thinner everyday, they do an ultrasound every month, I was monitored by a cardiologist for awhile for extra heart beats (they have been corrected with magnesium supplements) and my OB sees me a little more frequently than normal. They sent me in for two glucose tests because the first was borderline. They are so caustious for me. They monitor me so closely I feel perfectly sure that everything will be fine.
I am c-section because my first was very big and wouldn't come out. But even that isn't a big deal. I was up walking around the next day. And only took one Tylenol when I got home for pain.
You will be fine. Relax, enjoy, and anticipate the wonderful additions to your life.
PS I don't believe most insurance companies will pay for IVF if you don't do at least two embryos.

First of all, good luck, it can be quite a rollercoaster ride doing IVF.
I did IVF a few times & now have g/b twins as a result! They are awesome. They are 5 now.
I am a little taller than you, but still considered petite. I was 5'4" 110#
I carried mine to 36 weeks, which is average & considered full term for twins. they were 5#3oz & 5#8oz.
good luck to you!

M.,
I have to tell you that I'm often confused why doctors think that a woman's size is an issue. There has been some publicity lately with the over-use of C-sections, too.
My mom was 5'2" and 110 pounds when she carried my brother. He ended up being delivered vaginally and was 11 pounds 10 ounces and 24" long. He was the size of two babies, actually!
I just wanted to share that with you. I'd really talk to your doctor and ask the questions. GOOD LUCK.
T.
