I have an odd request for info from anyone who has any. I have a small bump on my vaginal area that is tender to the touch. I have had only 1 partner (husband) for 8 1/2 years and we use a condom for b.c. I have never had an STD and it's on the outside area. I don 't know if it could be a gland. i am sure my husband is not cheating, if we're not at work we are together with our kids. Has any one had anything like this and will it go away or do I need to try to get in to my OBGyn to get checked?

What can I do next?

Question is: how long has it been there? Could just be an in-grown hair. Give it a little more time- week? then call up the gyno for advice.

I've had something like this. My dr. told me it was an irritated pore. Some hot compresses, cotton panties, and it cleared up in a week or so.

It could be several things... I would get two opinions; one from an MD and one from an intuitive homeopath. One will treat the symptoms and one will treat the problem.

I would have it checked out ... You never know. There is so much talk now about HPV. Do you ever get bikini waxes? I hate to say this but I own a salon and do waxing (on the face) and I know some salons will dip the same stick back in the wax (so unsanitary) so if someone was waxed before you and had something... it could have passed to you. Also if you wax (even at home) sometimes it can cause ingrown hairs and when you get an ingrown hair a lot of times you will get a bump, almost like a pimple. If you see hair coming out of the bump it could be an ingrown or if you can squeeze it. Sometimes when you shave that is common to get ingrowns also.

I had something similar after my son was born. The doctor said it was either a boil or a bartholin cyst. If I remember right, the Bartholin glands are on either side of your vagina and secrete fluid to assist in intercourse. As it turns out I had a cyst. They start out slightly painful but as they increase in size they become very painful. The best treatment is hot baths or a hot water bottle placed in that area. You treat it like a boil and try to bring it to a head. I do not recommend trying to pop it yourself...let it happen on its own. Once it pops the pressure releases and you will feel much better. Until it pops you might need Ibuprofen or something similar. If it is a Bartholin cyst it can happen again. You can try to prevent it by taking hot baths on a regular basis. That has helped me tremendously. If that doesn't work then you would need to talk to your OBGYN about other options.

I certainly dont want to make light of your situation but I personally have had 2 times when I have gotten a "bump" in that area and was extremely painful. When I asked my husband to check it out and see what it looked like it turned out to be a pimple. That's a very strange place for a pimple but it's happened 2x now. If it isnt gone in a few more days i would get it checked out though. With my "pimple" it lasted only about 5 days and it was gone.

It sounds like it could be a bartholins cyst. I had one once and ended up having it drained. They can get really big and painful.

Have it checked. It can't hurt to have piece of mind. Does it itch? It could be as simple as a clogged pore or follicle. If either of you have cold sores, they can be transmitted oral to genital. Good luck!

I would not hurt to get it checked by your OBGYN. I have had an ingrown hair that was on the outside of my vagina and it was pain full to touch. It was there for about a week or so. I would think if it has been there much longer than that, I would at least call to talk to the nurse at your OBGYN office and get her advice.

Hi G.,
I have gotten that now and then. I happen to have it when I was getting my exam and had my doctor check. He said, "It was perfectly normal for those to happen now and then. and yes it would be painful." I think he said it was like little cysts, sort of zits that occasionally form in that area. At least this is what he said about mine. He knows my medical history. Sometimes mine would be poppable and I would painful pop it and it would go away faster though I would not recommend it. pretty painful. They go away in about a week in my experience. I worried too.

You should take a pregnancy test, I bet you are pregnant with a girl. It could very likely be your hormones.

I had gotten with both pregnancies with my daughter's (looked like possibly ingrown hair(in groin area), but was a type of wart (not STD) that needed to be frozen at the doc's. Never happened again, except when a few months pregant with our second daughter. I was waiting for it to happen again with our third child and it never did and came to fine out it was a boy. Somehow that's how my body reacted to the extra hormones with carrying daughter's. Very weird!

So try a pregnancy test and if you are let me know, because that would truly be interesting if that happens to women who are carrying girls. It's ironic. Otherwise, it could possibly be something more and you would either way need to see your doctor. Hopefully your husband isn't being unfaithful...that would be terrible.

Hope this helps! L.

call your OB-GYN could just be a cyst. They'll probably suggest you apply warm compress and see if it can be squeezed like a pimple or tell you to come in to take a peak. Either way, don't jump to cheating husband until you have an actual diagnosis of an STD.

Hi G.-
I get things like that occasionally- and I went in thinking a bunch of things too....
turns out it's like a plugged gland, boil?? and they told me to do hot compresses with a wash cloth- interesting and challenging but it works.
They either open up to release built up fluid or just go away.
Try and if it doesn't work- then go in for an appt- should only take a few days if do twice a day.

Please don't fret about the bump. How long have you had it? Sometimes I get pimples there. If it doesn't go away or gets worse, have it checked by your gynecologist. I know some great gynecologists if you're unhappy with your current one.

I have had something very similar and fortunately it went away within a couple days. I never went to the doctor and got it checked out because I believe it was actually caused from having sex (kind of like a contusion). I could be wrong but nevertheless, it went away and has never bothered me or came back since.

I've had something similar. Mine wasn't a boil or a cyst...it was a swollen gland. The Dr. told me this can happen after having a lot of sex (have you been more active lately?)...she said they are very common to see after honeymoons - LOL Anyway...hot baths are a good way for it to go back to normal. However, it never hurts to go to the Dr. and have it checked out just to be sure ;)

It doesn't hurt to have your doc take a glance to be sure, but I, too, had something like you are describing. It happened just a few days before a pap, so I was able to ask right away. Mine was a swollen area and it was also very sore. I have had it happen 2X and once I was able to "pop it" like a zit. After that, it went away. Doctor wasn't worried. I have also had only 1 partner and we were both virgins when we married. We have been together now for just over 13 years.

You should definately have your gyno check it out. It doesn't mean that your husband is cheating. Sometimes things lie dormant for years, and then appear. Or, it might be something completely not related to an STD. Either way, you want a professional to look at it. Better safe than sorry.

I have run across that problem from time to time G. so don't feel alone. Mine are little cysts/ingrown hairs and as much as it might hurt - I gently squeeze (using a mirrow so I can see what I'm doing) and the fluid/gunk comes right out and boy I feel better within just a few minutes.

If that doesn't work for you - go to the doc and let him/her check it out to be sure.

it could be an ingrown hair. i have had several of those before, and they are really really tender and red. it is an area with a lot of rubbing on clothes and stuff, so its common i guess. if you are unsure, i would have it checked so at least you know it is nothing serious. but if you are both monogamas, you shouldnt have to worry about much, especially if you have both been tested and come out clean in the past years.
but i would really think it is an ingrown hair. i guess you could try to mess with it and see... but that might be difficult.

Have your husband take a look... It could just be an ingrown hair or even a pimple. I have had an ingrown hair down there before and it is a bit painfull and strange as you can't see it clearly. My husband took a tweezer and pulled the hair out and in less than a day it went back to normal. If after he has looked and if he doesn't see anything then yes at least call the nurse line at the OBGYN office and tell them your situation (after all that is what they are there for).

The people writing in so far are probably right, it is probably nothing, but you need to get on the phone and make an appointment pronto.

Hello, I had a similar problem after I had my son three and a half years ago. I ignored it and it went away for a while, but several months later it came back bigger and even more painful. It was driving me nuts so I popped it myself and it was HORRIBLE pain! A lot of goo came out that smelled unpleasant. It still didn't go away so I finally went to my OB/Gyn and he scraped it out. It turned out to be a cyst.

Interestingly, I had a consult with a dermatologist recently because I have small patch of recurring impetigo that comes to the corner of my mouth once every couple years since I was a little girl. It's really annoying and unattractive and it looks like a cold sore. Anyway, I asked the derm. why it kept coming back and why it couldn't be cured permanently. She said that it was very likely my body carried some sort of virus (I think she might have said some type of strep virus) and I was going to be susceptible to it for the rest of my life. She gave me some tips on how to prevent it, then she said that because of this virus, I would be more likely to have cysts and boils, particularly in the groin area. She recommended always using an antibacterial body wash. I haven't had any more since, so once you get this taken care of, it might be a good idea to use that type of soap daily for preventive purposes.

It's also possible it's just a pimple. What a place to have one, huh!
