Okay,
So I am 8 days late with my period. I am pretty for certain that I am not pregnant, but the only other time I have been late/missed my period was when I was pregnant with my daughter. I have been getting negative home pregnancy test, but I am not sure how long I keep taking these. When should I be for certain that I am not pregnant? This past month has been pretty much the same for me...I did have a little less sleep and little more activity than normal. I am also weaning my daughter...can breastfeeding affect your period? I just am so confused by this. I had already gotten a positive home pregncany test by now with my daughter. Also, I have no symptoms, but still not sure. Any advice would be great.

So What Happened?

Well, I want to thank everyone for their great advice! I decided to go down to my doctors office and get a pregnancy test (blood test) and sure enough that night I got my period. Figures! I'm not sure why my period was so late, I guess maybe I just had a wacky month!

Yup...anything that messes with your hormones (from stress to nursing...and weaning does both!) can affect your period. If you're late and you're not testing positive, you're probably not pregnant...yet. Stopping nursing can frequently cause a short period of SUPER-FERTILE-WOMAN, though. So watch out. :)

You CAN have false negatives in home pregnancy tests. One of the most common causes is from dilute urine. So if you're really concerned, test right after you wake up.

Hi there. This answer should be very simple. Go to your OBGYN to get these more accurate results and it will clear you of all or any doubts.
Good luck.

Don't worry...It's highly unlikely that you are PG if you are 8 days late with a (-) result. HPT's are really accurate nowadays, and much earlier in your cycle than that. Still, to be sure, I'd retest first thing in the morning.

Strange things just happen. I have known several of my friends and myself who had a screwy couple of months right before we turned 30 and again around 34. I don't know how old you are but I doubt a pregnancy after 8 days and neg. test. If it doesn't start in a week call your OBGYN. Don't be worried it may just be a hormone fluctuation.

It may be to early to tell if you are pregnant, or you may start your period any day! If you do not start with in a few days i would suggest going to a pregnancy resource center for a free test. They will test and retest you for free. Pregnancy Resource Center in Oceanside, and BirthChoice of San Marcos are great. Our bodies change so much with birth/brestfeeding. It may just take a bit to get on track.

Yes, it is possible that weaning is causing this. I think that you would probably have a positive pregnancy test by now if you were pregnant. If you skip another period and still get negative tests, then you may want to contact your doctor, just to be sure all is ok, but skipping just one is perfectly normal, for a multitude of possible reasons :)

The best time to test is first thing in the morning. 8 days is still pretty early. I'd try again at maybe 10 days or 14 days. I was a week late and took the test and it was negative. Took it a week later and it was positive. False negatives are possible. My OB told me their test is no more accurate or reliable than the over the counter test. So, no point in going there unless there's a problem. But, it could be the nursing. Just give it time.

As said in the previous responses it will only ease your mind if you go to your Dr. Also, yes breastfeeding can affect your period. My friend didn't get hers until she stopped feeding her first baby. With mine I got it one month then wouldn't get it again for a couple of months.

Good Luck

Breastfeeding absolutely effects your period. I'm guessing it's that and you have no need to worry.

You don't say how old YOU are. The only reason I ask is that, the year before I started menopause I was late every other month. I kept thinking aaaack, I'm pregnant! and did not recognize the pattern until the year was over (I kept track on a calendar to use for our birth control method.) The following year, I skipped every other month. If you are late thirties or older it could be that. Though the average age is 50 something, anything between 35 and 50 something is normal. Breastfeeding definitely affects your period. In some countries it is used as a form of birth control, but that only works if the child is ONLY on breast milk and always "on demand" (whenever the child wants). Once schedules and solid foods are introduced, it is not longer an effective means of birth control. Ask your gynecologist if they have a more sensitive pregancy test, or how long one could keep getting "false negatives". B.
