My daughter is 2 1/2, and we have recently mastered the potty!!!!
However, I bought her a brand new bed 8 days ago, and now all of a sudden she is wetting the bed at night. Anyways, does anyone know how to get urine out of a BRAND NEW mattress??? I'm so frustrated.

What can I do next?

You might try borrowing a carpet cleaning machine with an upholstery attachment. I've got one that I've used on the car seats and sofa. I think it might work on a mattress too.
And once you get it cleaned, be sure to get a waterproof mattress pad. We got one for every bed in the house (even ours and the guest bed, just in case they were there when it happened). I like the ones at Linens and Things--they are cotton-y on top, don't sound crinkly from the plastic, and fit our mattresses well.

Hi E.,
I just have a suggestion for a mattress cover. I bought one from the baby center web site that I love. It's called a "saddle-style" mattress protector and I like it because it's only about 2 feet long and it sits on top of the sheets so you can just pull it off when your child has an accident and throw it in the wash and it goes right into the dryer.

Hi E.,
I use a mix of vinegar and water (I keep a spray bottle of it under my sink) to clean up pretty much any spill on carpet, upholstery, or beds. It works great on counter tops and tables too. FYI: it does smell vinegary, if that's a word, for a few minutes. The vinegar smell goes away, and so does the urine smell.

Good luck.

Hi E., Depending on how soaked it is, I'd try Folex first and then maybe have it professionally cleaned (worth it, imo, as a brand new mattress). After that, buy a waterproof mattress protector, either the kind that zips around the entire mattress or just a waterproof mattress pad that fits like a regular mattress pad. Your daughter will, likely, have nighttime accidents off and on for quite a while, years. Sometimes, even an older kid can have an accident 'out of the blue', plus there's the possibility of vomiting when your daughter is sick (also for years to come). I think it's well worth it to get a really good waterproof mattress protector . My husband and I have one on our own bed, too.
Good luck!

Dear E.,
Try a water repellant fitted "sheet" or the absorbant "potty pads" you can purchase to put under her regular cotton sheet. If she is peeing the bed, you will have to wash the top sheet and dispose of the potty pads and replace them nightly. It's worth it to spare the mattress.

Take an absorbant towel and sit on it if you have to to absorb the wetness. Let it air out and sprinkle some baking soda then sit on the towel again and vacuum the baking soda up. After that, spraying the mattress with some Lysol will help kill germs, but make sure the room is well ventilated and you don't put your daughter on a Lysol soaked bed. A) Fumes B) It will mildew.

Summer is coming in some areas and as long as it's a smaller mattress, take it outside and put it in the sunshine and wind to air and dry it out. Then, make sure you have the mattress protected from future wetness, stains, and odor.

I would try vinegar. I have never tried it on a bed, but when the dog has an accident, we use vinegar to clean it up. I would also suggest putting a water proof mattress pad on the bed so future accidents don't get on the mattress.

You need to use a waterproof mattress pad and you will proabbly need to use it until your children are 5 or 6 because there is always the rare or often occurance of an "accident". You should probably get a new mattress not sure you can ever get the pee pee out.

Once you get it as clean as possible I'd get a cover for it ASAP (check Bed Bath and Beyond), because she's sure to backslide occasionally w/ night time potty training over the next few years -- like when she's really sick -- the cover will also be good for that as well -- I can't tell you how many times my child (who is now 6) has thrown up all over her bed in the middle of the night!! With a good cover you can all be a little less stressed.
Good luck!

I have not been able to get urine completely out of a mattress, but I wash the surface of the mattress with a damp towel and mild soap. I then spray febreeze and let it air dry. We now have mattress covers on all mattresses in the house (since our kids like to sleep in our bed at times). The mattress covers work well. Just make sure you get the plastic one and not the cotton covers. That way if our kids have any accidents, the bed linens absorbs the urine, not the mattress. It's much easier to put the bed linens in the laundry than it is to keep cleaning the mattress. You can get the covers at places like Target or Bed, Bath & Beyond and they have covers for all mattresss sizes. I hope this helps.

Even if she is potty trained you need to keep the diaper on at night, but I guess you know that. That takes much longer to train.

I use a pet urine cleaner called "Nature's Miracle." After soaking up what urine you can with a clean towel, douse it in the Nature's Miracle (I use a spray bottle). I also put a towel over it so it naturally soaks it up without me pressing it into the mattress any more. We also use Nature's Miracle laundry detergent which is actually for pet dander and people who have animal allergies... but it removes any smell and stains out of clothes caused by urine (since my son still has accidents all the time in the middle of the night). It's a little pricey, but definitely worth it!!!

I think you will have to have it professionally cleaned. Sleep Train has a great waterproof mattress cover for around 100.00. It guarantees no leaks for 10 years or so. It isn't plastic so your child won't get too hot as can happen with other water proof covers.

Major changes in your daughter's (or any young toddler's)routine (like getting a new bed) will usually trigger a setback in any recent advances. Maybe go back to pull ups for a while, and reassure her that her new special bed is a fun thing.

she is wetting the bed cause its new. the way to get urine out if you have a carpet cleaner get some pet urine remover and use that in the machine. My daughter is 4 and she still wets the bed. then get a mattress cover that is waterproof and then wash that when ever she pees that will help protect the mattress from future accedients (sp). Allso I would make sure that you FABREEZE around the bed. so that way the room doesnt start to smell like pee

hope this helps

Dish soap with lukewarm water works! It gets rid of the smell and the stain! Just blot the area and let dry!

You could try that stuff they use on pet urine. There are a bunch of them. The latest one I bought is called "Anti-Icky-Poo", but there are a few other good brands.

Nature's Miracle and once you get the mattress clean and deoderized, a waterproof mattress pad. I definitely would NOT put the pull-ups back on her as this will just cause confusion and prolong the night time potty training. If you put the pull-ups back on her, she will think it's okay to pee in the pull-up and you will sabotage the wonderful progress that she has already made. Congrats to you and your daughter on potty training by 2 1/2! You should both be doing the happy dance :)

you could also try products that are made for cleaning up pet or kiddie urine - pet stores carry a product called "Nature's miracle" that's an enzyme-based product that breaks down the stinky stuff. Target used to carry somethign called "Kids'n'pets" which was similar to Nature's Miracle but less expensive - haven't seen it there lately though
another rec for waterproof mattress pad, and you might also consider doing what another mom calls the "lasagna" technique of layering a mattress pad, fitted sheet, second mattress pad, and then another fitted sheet before putting the top sheet and blankets on. That way if you need to clean up a late night accident, you can pull off the soiled layers and still have a clean fitted sheet and mattress pad on the bed so you'll save a bit of time getting your kid back to bed.
