Pee Pee Bed

My daughter is 2 1/2, and we have recently mastered the potty!!!!
However, I bought her a brand new bed 8 days ago, and now all of a sudden she is wetting the bed at night. Anyways, does anyone know how to get urine out of a BRAND NEW mattress??? I'm so frustrated.

What can I do next?

Hi E.,
I just have a suggestion for a mattress cover. I bought one from the baby center web site that I love. It's called a "saddle-style" mattress protector and I like it because it's only about 2 feet long and it sits on top of the sheets so you can just pull it off when your child has an accident and throw it in the wash and it goes right into the dryer.

Hi E., Depending on how soaked it is, I'd try Folex first and then maybe have it professionally cleaned (worth it, imo, as a brand new mattress). After that, buy a waterproof mattress protector, either the kind that zips around the entire mattress or just a waterproof mattress pad that fits like a regular mattress pad. Your daughter will, likely, have nighttime accidents off and on for quite a while, years. Sometimes, even an older kid can have an accident 'out of the blue', plus there's the possibility of vomiting when your daughter is sick (also for years to come). I think it's well worth it to get a really good waterproof mattress protector . My husband and I have one on our own bed, too.
Good luck!

I would try vinegar. I have never tried it on a bed, but when the dog has an accident, we use vinegar to clean it up. I would also suggest putting a water proof mattress pad on the bed so future accidents don't get on the mattress.

You might try borrowing a carpet cleaning machine with an upholstery attachment. I've got one that I've used on the car seats and sofa. I think it might work on a mattress too.
And once you get it cleaned, be sure to get a waterproof mattress pad. We got one for every bed in the house (even ours and the guest bed, just in case they were there when it happened). I like the ones at Linens and Things--they are cotton-y on top, don't sound crinkly from the plastic, and fit our mattresses well.

Dear E.,
Try a water repellant fitted "sheet" or the absorbant "potty pads" you can purchase to put under her regular cotton sheet. If she is peeing the bed, you will have to wash the top sheet and dispose of the potty pads and replace them nightly. It's worth it to spare the mattress.

Take an absorbant towel and sit on it if you have to to absorb the wetness. Let it air out and sprinkle some baking soda then sit on the towel again and vacuum the baking soda up. After that, spraying the mattress with some Lysol will help kill germs, but make sure the room is well ventilated and you don't put your daughter on a Lysol soaked bed. A) Fumes B) It will mildew.

Summer is coming in some areas and as long as it's a smaller mattress, take it outside and put it in the sunshine and wind to air and dry it out. Then, make sure you have the mattress protected from future wetness, stains, and odor.

Hi E.,
I use a mix of vinegar and water (I keep a spray bottle of it under my sink) to clean up pretty much any spill on carpet, upholstery, or beds. It works great on counter tops and tables too. FYI: it does smell vinegary, if that's a word, for a few minutes. The vinegar smell goes away, and so does the urine smell.

Good luck.
