Pediatric Ophthalmology

Hello, My 15 month old daughter has had a blocked tear duct since birth and has been recommended to have a probing surgery to resolve the issue. I would like to take a second opinion so if any parents in the Bay Area (El Camino hospital or Standford hospital) have had this surgery performed on their children I would really appreciate feedback on the doctors and hospital.

Thanks.

What can I do next?

I used Dr. Good and Dr Susan Day at the CA Pacific Medical Center

Dr Good did my daughters' surgery for cataracts. He was excellent.
My daughter was 3 at the time.

Check this site which offers a reasonable view for your situation:

Not to generalize or anything, but it is interesting to note that among the several websites I looked at, the ones recommending the minor surgery and downplaying the massaging option were the hospital websites.
On the plus side, El Camino hospital is top notch. Stanford is too. Obviously research is out of this world at Stanford, but another Mom told me her experience at Stanford was less than exemplary. My own experience with both hospitals from a mom's perspective, is that they're both really good.
P.S. You can find more info than you care to read if you google "blocked tear duct in infants".

Hi,

We have been seeing Dr. Omandi Nyong'O with PAMF - Fremont for almost 7 months now. He performed cataract surgery on my then 9 month old son. He's a very well known pediatric ophthalmologist in the Bay Area and performs surgeries at PAMF as well as Stanford LPCH and one other hospital in the Bay Area (I dont recall the name). My son's surgery was done at Stanford LPCH. If it helps, there's a yahoo group called Aphakic that mostly has parents who have kids with cataracts, but you might want to ask this question there. Hope this is helpful!

Hi
My daughter had two blocked tear ducts. She is 15 years old now. Dr Carl Winton did the surgery, and it was over before I could even give it a second thought. At the time she did it in her office with a papoose. My daughter had many eye infections before this surgery, and they completely stopped after the surgery. Dr Winton is an excellent pediatric ophthamologist that is in Mtn. View, at the PAMF there, what usedto be camino medical group.. She has seen three of my four children and we have known her for over 15 years. We also saw Dr. Alcorn at one time and she was also wonderful.

My son had a corneal abrasion that wouldn't heal when he was 5 years old. He saw Dr. Alcorn at Stanford, Lucile Packard in conjunction with a corneal specialist there (forgetting his name). She was excellent. I highly recommend her.
