PCOS And Taking Metformin and Clomid

Hi ya Mamas!
I recently found out that I have PCOS. I am currently trying to lose weight, and my Dr. has started me on Metformin and given me a Rx. for Clomid, but when I filled it it was almost $50!!! I was a bit shocked! (usually our co-pay is $10, but I guess this med is not covered.

OK, so my questions is has anyone else recently been down this road and what was it like? (how long sis the clomid take to start working? and how did you react to the Metformin?)

We have 3 cycles worth of Clomid before my OB won't help us any more and we have to see a specialist (which is not covered by insurance).

Oh, BTW, we have been trying for a WHILE! :-) and we are doing everything that is usually recommended ;-)

thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

I do not have PCOS - but was prescribed Clomid after not being able to get pg (doing all the usual charting and other tricks for nearly two years.) I was also told to try Clomid for three cycles, if didn't work - then come back for an increased dose. And if the increased dose didn't work after three more cycles - the next step was a hysterosalpiniogram (sp?) I was surprised when we got pg with the first round of Clomid. Good luck!!

The metformin is to control your bloodsugar. You may experence some cramping and more than usual bowelmovements while your body adjusts to it.
I dont know anything about Clomid, but I think it is supposed to wrok pretty quickly.
Best of Luck!!!

Fred Meyers had Clomid for $10.00 as long as you do not run it through insurance. We have been trying for 3 years and no luck so wish I had some more advice for you but I need my own . I was on the clomid just recently and that is where I got it for that price. Good luck

You need to go buy the book - The Insulin Resistant Diet. I had a friend with PCOS lose more than 60lbs with the diet and got pg. However, having PCOS does lower your chances of getting pg naturally. You may need to go see an RE (reproductive endocrinologist) to help with your second child.

I also have PCOS and conceived my first child with metformin and clomid. I was on 1000mg of metformin (which causes a lot of people many stomach problems - apparently there's a "new" drug out there that is just as good as metformin, but better side effects - Glumetza). Clomid you have to be careful with, it's not good to take it for more than 6 mos., so it's good your Dr. will only do 3.

You might consider taking the metformin w/out the clomid for a couple mos. It's possible that will be enough..

I would call around for prices on clomid. I know Costco generally has good prices and from what I understand, you don't have to be a member.

What worked for me is getting the fertility test strips (I bought them on ebay). It was more accurate that temperature charting.

I conceived for the first time after two tries (but this resulted in a miscarriage) and the second time after one try (resulting in our daughter).

There is lots of information out there.... especially on the internet. soulcysters.com

One thing you may want to research and discuss with your dr. is whether or not to continue the metformin once you conceive. Everyone has different opinions on that.

Good luck!

I don't have PCOS but I did take clomid. I was put on it by a reproductive endorinologist from Northwest Center for Reproductive Sciences. I was only on it for a month because it actually made my uterine lining thinner which made implantation impossible. So it didn't work for me.
