Patching Jeans

I'm not sure if anyone does this anymore since I don't see many kids with patches but my kids seem to always get holes in their jeans. I wanted to know if I patches them rather then toss them if it's in style ok accepted?

I ask because as a little girl when we had high waters (who knows what they are called now) we got made fun of but patches not so much. If I have to buy a few new pairs fine but understand my kids don't get designer and we buy Walmart, Target, Rross and Kohl's at times.

Not looking to be in style just make sure they aren't made fun of it's hard enough as kids. So what do all of you do also when your kids get holes in the knees of their jeans?

Thanks for your answers

i patch my son's pants when he gets holes, oh well, lol. He has to wear uniforms so I will patch them up until the next semester and then I will buy some more for the next semester. But we found some school pants with the double knee so that has been working. And the older he gets the less he gets holes in them

Patching is still in as a matter of fact so are the holes, but in my house we patch still. For the little ones I make them fun patches, for the boy I patch from the inside. I am not about to buy more when they fit and are still wearable.

Not sure how old your children are, but if they are young, can you find (or make) patches that have their favorite characters on them? That way, they won't really look so much like patches but just jeans with Dora or Spider Man or whoever on them. LIke you, I don't want to buy new clothes just b/c something has a little hole in them and will try patches if it will extend the life of pants, jeants, etc. If you have older children and it is a girl, maybe you can find or make patches that have sparkles or "jewels" or something like that on them.

If they still fit, you can cut them into shorts? You can make a purse out of them?

I often cut them off for shorts if they still fit everywhere else. I have patched jeans from the inside. I put the patch inside the leg and use Wonder Under around the edge. When I iron it on it holds well. Then I trim the fringed edges off and try to make it look as nice as possible. If they are too short then I send the pants to my sister and she adds decorations to the bottom. She has also sewn appliques on or buttons and stuff. I'll add a link to her etsy site, not to try and sell you anything, just to give you an idea about what to do to extend their life, to inspire your imagination.

BUT, these are no longer school clothes. I think kids are cruel and I try to have the kids wear their better clothes to school then change into play clothes when they get home. To me it's like their job, it's their job to go to school and get an education, it's my job to provide a home for them. If I work then I dress for the job, they dress for the "job" too.

These jean skirts were purchsed at thrift stores and rehabbed...or embellished, whatever you want to call it. But look how cute they are, any hoes that were there are gone now and the item looks designer good.

I hope you are inspired to create some awesome looking repairs.

I patch and buy iron-on ones at Hancock Fabrics because they are easy to get into place and then I stitch around the exterior with an opposite color thread for further coolness. And when I'm really feeling crafty, I make designs from the pocket down to the patch and do both knees at the same time since one's always close to the other to wear out:)

Also, when the jeans are still in good shape, I put "extensions" at the bottom in different fabrics -- scraps from wornout pants or skirts, funky lace or stuff from yard sales and cut down -- they look "hobo" without the "highwater" look that I never liked:)

I was curious about this too. But i only have a kindergartener i'm not sure you can get a way with it with older kids.

I don't understand what people are saying about patching the inside, It might give you a little longer before the hole actually rips but the knees will still be all white and worn and yucky looking, won't they??? again my son is probably crawling all around playing cars and stuff and sitting crosslegged on teh carpet so maybe it's differnt,I just don't see how patching the inside helps.

I found a pair of Lee jeans at kols in the fall that were already reinforced at the knees and they have lasted better than others, I did pay a bit more for them $14 in stead of $10 but it was worth it.

Actually holes in the jeans are kind of in style! I sometimes iron on a patch inside the jeans before the hole goes all the way through. But sometimes I just leave the holes. People pay a lot of $$ for that look! (And you are an awesome mom to be so sensitive to peer pressure...it is out there.)

Just in case, I put the patches on the inside and they look cool with the hole still there, but the hole does not grow. :)

if you don't want to do patches you can also shop at sears. they have the kidvantage program and as long as it's the same size, they will replace any of (i think their brand) their clothes that rip or wear out before they are outgrown. and i just bought my son (he's a lot smaller though) jeans with patches already on them. hope this helps.

I've been wondering this also so thanks for asking the other mommas. Patching from the inside....THAT is brilliant! And you all are so right about the hole look being in. As for the patching, does anyone else remember that brand USED jeans?? Now that you mention it, that entire line of clothes was based on frayed and holes and patches in their clothes.
