Pastel Rugs and Lamps for Baby's Room

I'm about to have a baby girl and I'm putting the finishing touches on her room. It's done in very soft colors and is kind of "shabby chic." The only two things I still need are a floor lamp (with a changing pad on the dresser, there's no room for a table lamp) and a rug. I'm having trouble finding these two items in soft colors (e.g., antique white lamp, and light pink or sage rug) at a reasonable price. Discount chain stores like Target and Bed, Bath, Beyond have all brightly colored things. Pottery Barn Kids has cute stuff that would work, but it's pricey. A floor lamp, e.g., is $149. Everything at Babies R Us is part of a matchy-matchy set. Any ideas on where else I should look?

What can I do next?

I always seem to find great stuff for my kids rooms at Tuesday Morning or Home Goods. They are like a TJ Max or Marshalls for home accessories. Decent prices for very cute kid stuff. Good luck!

Buy a floor lamp you like from Target or where & spray paint it to a color you want.

If you're creative, and the room truly is in the fashion of shabby chic, consider going to a second-hand store and refurbishing a used lamp yourself. I had access to the shabby chic book at one time, and she (designer) only used second-hand items from flea markets, and good-will type stores to make her creations. Go to they library and I bet you'll find her book and plenty of ideas.

Lampshades at hardware stores are very cheap. If you get a plain one, you can upholster, paint it, or embelish it yourself.

Just be careful about the types of paints and epoxy you might use as many are harmful (fumes and toxins) to the unborn. Better yet, be on the safe-side, so if you can, have a friend or significant do any painting you need done for now.

One aside, I noticed you mentioned that you are going to use a dresser top for a changing table. I know money is tight, but that is really-really dangerous for the baby. (FAlling risk). If you can swing it, I strongly urge you to find an actual changing table. It may not fit the room or be cute, but having a head injury or worse isn't worth it.

Certain K-Marts are closing their doors and are deep clearancing all of their stock, including baby furniture, clothes, etc. Check online to see if one is in your area.

Once upon a child is one good place to find affordable baby furniture. You could probably get a decent changing table for about $30...about the cost of a new lamp (target has a floor lamp for about $8 from their back to college collection...not sure of the name of the line) and pastel colored rug.

I agree on the lamp idea in terms of buying something used and then creating your own shade.

I just wanted to comment on the changing pad on the dresser. That is what we did because our son's room is very tiny and there wasn't space for a changing table and a dresser. It is perfectly safe as long as you get a contoured changing pad. It will have a little strap that hangs off one side and can be nailed to the back side of the dresser. Then always buckle the child in with the safety straps and never step away from them.

The TJ Maxx in St Louis Park often has great lamp and rug options as well as baby items.

have you tried craigs list?? can find just bout everything on that site...or try the good will or thrift stores..good luck...
