Passing Out in Young Children

My 20 month old seems to pass out very easily if she hits her head even moderately hard. The first time was when she fell down the steps before she was a year old. She built up a scream, stopped and then went out for a few seconds. Then she came to and started crying. It was a little scarey, but she seemed normal afterward. Since then, it has happened almost a dozen times. She slips, hits her head, and passes out exactly the same way. She just did it tonight, but it was a little scarier because she was out for a little longer than usual (a little under a minute maybe). After she came to, I nursed her and she went to sleep. I'm assuming she keeps getting a mild concusion. I talked to my mom who said my sister did this when she was little to, but outgrew it. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

What can I do next?

If she is actually passing out, then I would be really worried, but to be honest, it doesn't sound like she's got a mild concusion. It sounds like she's a breath holder. My friend's son did this, and it is a little scary. You can kinda see it soming though. Next time you see her about to pass out or looking dizzy, try blowing in her face to make her take a breath (that's what the doctor told my friend to do). It worked for him. Under all circumstances though, talk to you ped!!!

it actually sounds like something that has to do with her heart, or her blood pressure, nothing serious, my brother since he was little will pass out when he pukes, he is now 17 and still does it, a lot of the elderly will pass out when they puke, and pass out with a slight bump on the head, children are the same way, she just seems to be getting so upset, scared, or startled by the bump initially and her little system is not super big or strong yet so she passes out, just like the elderly who's systems are compromised, that is why when your sister grew up she grew out of it

I have not gone through this but my first gut instinct would be to call your doctor - especially if you think she's had a mild concusion ... those can be very dangerous and you want to be sure that there is nothing wrong with her head or any swelling that could lead to someting problematic. The docot may want to do a CAT scan or Xray to ensure everything is OK. It could just be nothing but I'd call the doc to be sure. good luck ... hope everything is fine with the little one.

Hi S.,
That sounds very scary! I would suggest seeing her pediatrician ASAP. Not to scare you anymore but it sounds like mild seizures. Please seek medical attention as soon as you can. I would love to know the turn out! I wish you all the best.

One Word....NEUROLOGIST!!!!

First off, you should really be talking her pediatrician about this. I don't think it is normal. Don't be suprised if a Neurologist isn't consulted, it sounds like seizures might be involved somewhere. My son has seizures and he is on meds for them, so it is controllable. I would call the DR first thing in the morning. If you think there is a concussion, you should take her to the ER, if I remember correctly, you aren't supposed to sleep after a concussion. Good Luck, hope all goes well with your little one.

I would get her looked at by medical personnel. I would even have them do a cat scan and make sure there is not something serious going on. Also, if she is having mild concusion, then letting her go to sleep is not a good thing. The doctor's have always told us, to check on our son every hour if he must go to sleep to make sure we can wake him up.

They take concussions very seriously. Please have her checked out.

OK, that is definitely something I would talk to her ped about. That is very concerning. I would freak if my dd did that.
