Pants for Larger Toddler...

My 14 month old is around 30+lbs and about 29 inches tall. For shirts I get him 24mo/2T. There are some 18mos he can wear. I am having a heck of a time finding pants for him though. There is one pair of jeans that fit him OK at baby Gap that have an elastic waist (I have to roll up a little) but I have been looking for khaki's and can't find much with an elastic waist in the 18-24mo range. Anything as I get into his age range don't have elastic waists anymore. The kind with the adjustable waist inside doesn't really seem to make that big of a difference and I still have to go a lot bigger then roll up. Anybody have any good suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I still had a hard time finding what I was looking for so I tried Once Upon a Child and found several items. I figured a place like that would have most variety! He's actually slimming down quite a bit since it warmed up and he's moving a lot so he might be able to wear normal pants/shorts now.

I had this same problem with my son when he was younger. I found that Gap, Old Navy and most "off" brands were made for thinner children. My son most often fit into Gymboree, Carters and Oshkosh. Now he's 5 and he is a bean pole. We can buy pretty much any brand now. Hope this helps you out.

Walmart - not my favorite store but they have super cheap elastic waist pants that fit kids up to 5T (which my five year old wears because he hates snaps and zippers). The are like $5-8 a pair and last a really long time. They have jeans and khakis and as much as I dislike the store they are GREAT pants for kids!

I have a 5 yr old with the same problem. He weighs about 60 lbs, but has regular 5 yr old size legs. All we could find were pants that would fit him around the waist but were way too long. I was getting tired of putting him in track pants all the time, so I starting searching for an alternative. I found different types of pants with an elastic waist at Sears, JC Penneys, and Younkers. I'm sure Dillards and Von Maur would have similar stuff.

I would suggest OshKoshBgosh they have outlet stores in Johnson Creek, Pleasant Praire and at Gurnee Mills. The have the elastic adjustable waist and I know they carry husky in regular kids sizes, you can call to see if they carry husky for toddlers.

They are always very helpful there and if you sign up for emails you will get coupons on a regular basis.

My daughter has always been very large for her age. She's always been "off the chart" at her dr appts. She's still big for her age but has slimmed down a lot. She started to slim down at about 18 months. Although I've never used them, I have heard that Gymboree has great husky sized pants online. They have larger waists and shorter inseams. I also found quite a few pants with adjustable hems (buttons). I was able to use capris as well in larger sizes. They were just like pants. Although that may not work for boys, take a look at boy shorts. Good luck!

Have you checked at Carters? There is one at the tanger outlet mall in northbranch. I get a lot of my sons cloths there. He is also big. He is 19 months and 30 lbs and 34 1/2 inches tall. They have pants that are partially elastic. I love the store they have very cute cloths and no overly expensive. There is also an osh gosh store there to that sells cut baby cloths.

I have the opposite problem- my 14 month old is 21 lbs and 32 inches tall! So I can't help for sure, but some brands I noticed that run HUGE in the waist and kind of shorter in the legs are the walmart brand (I forgot what its called, maybe faded glory?), and Crazy 8. Crazy 8 has the adjustable waist but they start out huge! My 4 year old accidentally put on his brother's 12 month pants and the waist fit well (but the legs came to his knees)! My 4 year old is petite but stocky so his waist is fairly big. I think they have decent prices. I don't know if its an actual store, I always buy online. Their pajamas run tiny, though, just so you know! Good luck finding something! I know how hard it can be when your child doesn't fall into the average size range. I think my baby will need adjustable pants or overalls the rest of his life (or at least until he hits the sizes where they come in "slim"...I remember thats all I could wear as a kid too).

From your post, it seems like you may be searching for a size too small? My son was very similar to your son's size, and has always been 2-3 sizes up from his "age group" he was wearing all 2T clothes at 12 months. Now, at 18 months he is moving towards a size 3T.

I know the adjustable waists (with the buttons) don't help in our situation - he just is always at the last button! I was kidding with my husband that they need to come out iwth some "husky" sizes for the toddlers!

I have had the best luck with Baby Gap, Gymboree and Crazy 8 for pants. These stores I have been able to find 2T with at least a half or full elastic waist - which is what I always try to find. We have a lot of overalls too- those you can buy big and roll up.

Good luck! I hope for both you & I that ours sons hit the "slimming down" stage soon! :)

My son was a big guy at this age too. I found he was much more comfortable in the Oshgosh overalls. They come in so many colors and prints, and they seemed to last forever because they are quality and you can adjust the straps to make it longer. He liked them because there were lots of pockets and you'll like them because his back won't get exposed when bending and playing. If they seem out of your price range, check out the Oshgosh outlets, and even rummage sales in a nice neighborhood, seems like they always have a few at each house!
Good luck, Pam.

Danielle I must admit in our house it is the total oposite. I have little ones who are skinny . We do go to Target,Old Navy and Gap to get pants because they all have the elastic waist that can be adjusted. Good luck in your search I hope this helps.

Dear Danielle~Good luck!!! My now 5 year old was/is the same way even now. I have to buy the larger size and either roll up or cut off the excess and hem it up myself. And anything I've found in "Husky" size doesn't have just an elastic waist, they have the button/snap with a zipper and my boy hates it. He says it's pinching him. So, I've bought a whole bunch of sweat pants with elastic by the ankles because I don't need to roll those up. Anywho, try Super Walmart. My 21 month old is still wearing 18 mo. and some 24 mo. hand~me~downs from big brother that are elastic waists that we got from Walmart. Again, good luck with everything.

Maybe elastic is not "in" this season. LOL!

I checked Hanna Andersson's site, and these "beach pants" caught my eye. They are khaki, have an elastic waist, and the bottoms can be cuffed w/a button tab. I also saw some other elastic waist pants on their site. They do Euro sizing which goes by mainly by height, and to a lesser extent weight, but how to figure it out is explained quite well:

I just checked my son's closet, and he has Carter's pants w/elastic waists in size 2T. He also had lots of "off brands" in 2T with elastic waists--the full elastic, not just partial. They are out there... They are all hand-me-downs, so I can't be of help as to the stores. One suggestion I have is to surf eBay and see what comes up. You might find overalls to work well, too.

You could try using the older kids sizes and just rolling up the legs since they will be too long. For a while we bought clothes that were a good fit in one way or another and then had Nana sew alterations. (We had to have waists taken in.) Another thing to try is to start looking at consignment shops or post an ad in a local paper seeking what you are looking for- chances are someone else has already had this issue and is holding onto baby/toddler clothes that would work just right for you).
