I use Mucinex D to avoid getting strep throat or tonsilitus at the first signs of a sore throat. Try gargling with as-hot-as-you-can-bare salted water. Take echinacea according to package directions every day to build the immune system. Suck on throat lozenges that include zinc & vitamin c. These all help me when I have this problem.

I start with warm salt-water gargles. Then if needed, add pain relievers. Should even work for the 4 yo.

Hi,
I'm so excited to see some of your replies! They are fantastic. I always use GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) first. It's fabulous. I put about 10 drops of GSE in water and gargle with it. You can do this as often as you need. I usually do it several times a day that first day. I seldom need it after that. You can also put one drop of peppermint essential oil in a small glass of water and drink that. It helps. Use good EO though. They are not all created equal. I use homeopathic belladonna for the pain. If it is strep, I also add in an ounce of Colloidal Silver 3x daily to the mix for 2 weeks (it is a natural antibiotic that your body cannot build an immunity to). Hope you are feeling better soon!

Try Throat Coat Tea. You can find it at places like Target in the tea aisle.

My son suffered from swollen and a PA in the doctor's office told us to mix Benadryl and Maalox. It really works and my friend tried it and she was amazed!

I got strep right after a yeast infection, and not wanting to go back to yeast I didn't want to do antibiotics again (I was pregnant). My granola sis-in-law suggested a couple of things that turned out to be miraculous...
First, gargle with vinegar and water - it has to be apple cider vinegar, 3 parts warm water to 1 part vinegar. It's disgusting, but it totally clears out any gross stuff that might be caught back there and it disinfects safely.
Second, take grapefruit seed extract. That's even more disgusting if you get the liquid, but again, it's super duper effective. It kills off all the bad stuff in your system. You can get it at any healthfood store. I tried it first mixed with water and could barely choke it down. If you mix it with apple juice or something like that it's doable. Super duper bitter, but amazingly good for your system.
Just those two things got rid of my strep in 2 days - no drugs! I recommend it to everyone because of how effective and safe it is.

Hi C. - salt water gargles and warm tea with honey are good for sore throats. You should probably have those looked at by your doc as well to rule out an infection.
