Pacifier OK to Use W/ Nebulizer?

Sometimes the only thing that will make my toddler sit through his nebulizer treatment is if he sucks on a binky while getting it. is this OK or does this render the treatment ineffective?

Plus, when he squirms, his eyes sometimes ends up getting sprayed with the medicine (pulmicort). Is this OK??

What can I do next?

The masks they make for little guys is usually smaller and it protects the eyes. If he is crying then he is breathing much deeper so the med is much more effective...but if you don't want him to cry breathing through the nose is okay. I try to do them when the little guys are sleeping if they hate it that much. Just holding the part that fits into the mask close to their mouth is sufficient. The mist still goes in their lungs, just not as well. If I do this with myself, maybe I have a tooth ache that is sensitive to cool air if I breathe through my mouth, I can breathe it in through my nose but it cakes up sometimes and I have to use a tissue to wipe it out.

I would say it is not as effective because he is not getting as much of the medication as he could be. My son had a hard time with the nebulizer but we made it where he could ONLY watch his cartoons during that time and he got one more after if he cooperated. He sat in daddy's lap and I "hooked him up" he also liked that he got to help me squeeze the medicine into the holder. I also got an extra mask for all of us to wear at the same time and that seemed to help also. Good Luck you will find what works for you and your little one it just may take some trial and error.

Our pedi said that was just fine. As long as he is sitting still, he is still getting the medicine he needs. As far as the medicine in the eye? I don't know, but surely someone would have thought about a restless infant/toddler and made it somewhat safe for the facial region as a whole.....I hope!

It is absolutely best if he will do it without binky, but if that's the ONLY way he can get it done, I would alternate taking it out the letting him have it. When my little one needed breathing treatments, I tried to catch him while he was napping. I would not worry about a little getting in his eyes:)

I can't answer your question, however, I do know they make pacifier attachments to go on the nebulizer. It has a little hole on the top near their nose. But I would assume that if you don't want to buy that, then its ok to suck a regular passy as long as you put the medicine right up to his nose, and he's breathing through his nose.

my son was given a pacifier with his nebulizer, it hooks up to the machine and comes out on top right under his nose. he is 8 months old so sometimes pulls at the cords still, i let him use his regular paci though and hold the hose under his nose and that works for us, being so little he really hates his mask.....good luck mommy!

As long as he is still inhaling it through his nose, I would imagine it is fine. One way we got our son to sit with the mask on, was by getting an extra mask and I would sit with it on (with out the medicine obviously) while he did the treatment. That way it was something that Mommy did too, so he didn't feel like it was just him. It helped a lot

Pulmicort in the eyes...

Pulmicort is a Corticosteroid.
You do not want that in the eyes.
