I felt like I have went to so many stores and can't find what I'm looking for. I am looking for a topping or a cake that is an Owl; like a mold or something I can create for the top of the cake. I would also pay a professional, but I need to be under $50 and I'm finding that a lot of the professional folks charge $60 and up.

Any ideas of places I could go or call to see if they have what I need or what I should do. My dd Birthday is Monday!

What can I do next?

Did you look at specifically cake supply stores? I found an Abby Cadabby at one when she wasn't popular enough to be at Micheal's of Jo Ann's or other craft stores. Or a cake shop may even sell you one.

I would make your own.
Make 2 circle cakes. One can be the body. The other one you cut up
for ears, wings, feet.
If you google owl cakes you can find pics to copy.
Use Oreo cookies (you open up) for the eyes, etc.
You can color white frosting for diff body parts.

Google easy owl drawings. Make the owl on parchment paper (placed on top of a piece of cardboard) out of candy and frostings, you know the squirty kind. Buy the cake at your supermarket and flip the paper over and transfer it to the cake. Touch up the smudged frosting with more frosting.

I have a side cake decorating business. If you would like to do it yourself, try a butter cream transfer....google it and you will find TONS of videos. This is an easy way to transfer a picture of whatever you want to a cake. This is the technique mamawithacamera is referring to.

Another option is to mold it yourself. Fondant is premade (you could also make candy clay....candy melts and corn syrup) and comes in lots of colors. Buy or make some rice kripie treats for the base...so you don't have to use so much expensive fondant. If you google "make a fondant owl" you will find lots of ideas. Owl can have so many different looks it will be easier to search for one you like. The nice thing about fondant is that it is like working with play doh and you can make the topper ahead of time. Some things to consider...don't leave the fondant out in the open when you are working, it can dry out. And water is like glue, it will stick pieces together, too much water and you'll have a mess. I usually use a paint brush to paint on water and put things together.

And finally, it doesn't have to be edible. You can buy a cake decorated cake and top it with an owl figure you like. I have put everything from lego toys to porceline figures on cakes. Just wash whatever you are using first.
