I have been trying to get pregnant for almost a year now and had a miscarriage in October. I had a stroke at age 19 and I'm 27 now. I have to take coumadin until I find out I'm pregnant and then switch to Lovenox (coumadin can really harm the baby). My gyno gave me the number to an infertility gyno. He talked to my husband and I on Monday and on Wednesday I had to go see him. He drew my blood because I was supposed to be ovulating but I already ovulated so he couldn't give me the shot. The shot is ovidrel and I am worried that it might cause me to have two or more babies. I really can not have a c-section because of my stroke. Oh yeah...I know I can get pregnant because I have an adorable 2 1/2 year boy. Please help!!!

What can I do next?

If all the tests say you and your husband are okay, why not just wait for it to happen on its own? I know it is hard particularly in this time of age when we expect to get what we want now. My husband and I did all the tests to see if there was anything wrong with either of us after trying for almost a year. Everything came out normal. I did one round of clomid and then decided to just wait for it to happen on its own. It took us almost three years before we got pregnant. At times it was difficult to wait, but it is possible. I have a neighbor who had one child with clomid and then got pregnant with triplets the second time she used clomid. If you can not have a c-section then I would be very cautious, you have to stay healthy for your son who needs his mama.

God Bless you. I had an accute stroke when I was 49 and I am on coumadin too. Sure would like to go off it. I believe it was caused by the harmone replacements the doctor gave me for menapause. I wonder if birth control pills gave you yours? Good luck with gettting pg again. It took years but I am fully recovered. G. W

Ovidrel (HCG shot) just makes you release the egg. It's a trigger shot. With fertility, they give you clomid or femera to increase the number of follicles producing eggs. If these two drugs aren't strong enough, they may give you an FSH shot to increase follicles. Estrace is another fertility drug that may be used if you need to increase your lining. Progesterone is the other drug they may give you to maintain lining through the luteal phase.

They should monitor your follicles before you take the ovidrel shot to see how many eggs are mature enough to be released. With fertility treatments, there is always the risk of multiples. You just have to weigh your options.

I've been through this for many years if you want to talk. I can give you the information from a patients perspective. I've had 7 miscarriages in my lifetime. I have a beautiful, healthy 2.5 year old daughter conceive because of my fertility clinic through the methods listed above. I have been trying for my second for over a year on and off with the fertility dr. There are also many things you can do with your diet to help increase your odds (no caffiene, exercise, less sugar, supplement like vitex). Give me a shout if you want to talk or if you just need to vent. :)

Jodi is right. Ovidrel is not what will make you have more eggs it will only trigger your ovulation. You will have multiple sonograms to see how many follicles you have and also what size they are. Once you get closer to ovulation they can then tell you how many follicles will actually ovulate in that cycle. I took fertility drugs for 8 months (clomid, then femara and then finally had to do 3 months of FSH injections) all of these drugs were in addition to ovidrel. There were many months that before I would ovulate I would have 7-10 eggs but then by the time I actually ovulated only 2 off the eggs would be big enough to ovulate. Over the 8 months I ovulated about 18 eggs or so and am currently pregnant with one baby. On the cycle that I got pregnant I ovulated 2 eggs and only 1 took, so really you never know.

I think that you will be fine, I hope that helped. If you have any questions or need someone to talk to I would be happy to talk with you =)
