Overweight, Prego, Homo for MTHFR, Have Had 5 Miscarriages in the past 2 Yrs
Hello Mothers of the World -
So, before I had my first son I weighed 170lbs (5'10") - - so i was healthy. Gained 60lbs with him, never lost it. Today I weigh 260lbs. I have been trying to get prego for about 2 yrs and I have had 5 miscarriages since i began. After the 3rd my doc did the usual blood work to see what the reson was and he said I am homogenious (cant spell) for MTHFR. And when i get prego again i would have to have shots (prob for the first 3 months) to keep the baby well. Just this past week I got a positive prego test (yay) and I am going to the doc next week. I have 2 questions and concerns today....
1......has anyone else had those shots for MTHFR?? Do you have to do it daily, do you do the shot yourself at home, does it have any side effects, what is it like.....im scared of it alittle (but ill do anything for my lil' one).
AND
2......MY WEIGHT IS A HUGE PROBLEM!!!!!! Im so scared im gonna walk into the docs office and hes gonna be like, "Wow, you already look prego and your only 3 weeks" Does anyone have any ideas for maintaining weight during the next 9 months?? Has anyone ever been big and prego and lost weight?? IM SOOO super, duper worried about the weight thing!!
Well, any thoughts, comments, or ideas here would be awesome!!
Thanks ladies,
Worried and happy ;-]

My friend only gained 5-6 lbs with her 3rd pregnancy. She had some weight to loose and she just decided to eat healthy and walk a lot. Her doctor sent her for testing due to her lack of weight gain but it was almost comical because it looked like she had a huge basketball under her shirt. ( the baby was a normal birth weigh too).
Good luck to you.

I can only answer question #2-
I'm overweight too and have been for all 3 of my pregnancies. My 1st pregnancy, I only gained 8 lbs and my son was born at 8lbs11oz. My 2nd baby, I only gained 4 lbs and she was born at 9lbs 4oz. I'm due in 5 days with this baby and have only gained 2 1/2 lbs. My doctor has never said anything about my weight because my tests and measurements all come back normal. I eat pretty healthy when I'm pregnant and I don't try to lose weight(I craved sausage and egg McMuffins from McDonald's with my 2nd pregnancy and still only gained 4lbs) , I just don't gain a lot. When you're overweight, you don't need to gain as much weight when pregnant. Another OB I saw told me at the beginning of my first pregnancy that I should only gain between 10-15 lbs while pregnant. I would not try to lose weight on purpose while pregnant, just eat healthy, and enjoy that little baby inside of you.

Technically, you only need about 200 extra calories per day for your growing baby. The difficult thing about this is your body OVERCOMPENSATES with much more hunger than that just to be sure you don't starve the baby, which is why you feel like you need to eat so much more than an extra 200. But you don't. If you're not used to counting calories, it will be kind of hard to start now, but what you DO need to do is to ONLY eat HEALTHY food. This will ensure it ALL goes to help the baby, and your calories will be used wisely, and there will be less excess calories from fat and sugar and junk which only goes on your body and is harder to lose later. But you can't diet now. you have to wait. Just eat healthy food. Eat lots of little snacks so you don't get famished and gorge for meals.
I had one friend who accidentally lost weight during pregnancy with severe morning sickness and puking. Aside from that, don't try to lose weight.
And be sure to exercise to a healthy level, just for your heart and circulation and to keep your muscles strong. You may lose a bit doing this, but you may just get hungrier, but you do need to do it regardless. Again, eat healthy.

J., ask your doctor to send you to a nutritionist. Basically, you need to eat the most healthy food that you can, nothing extra, absolutely no empty calories. The nutritionist can help you with this. You also need to walk, walk, walk and lift a few little weights. The doctor can tell you how far during pregnancy you can go with this. (I'm not talking about much - just some.)
I don't have your experience with the MTHFR (don't even know what that stands for), but you can do something about the food. Remember, NOTHING goes into your mouth that you don't 100% need. That's the ticket.
Good luck to you and hope this pregnancy goes well.

I can help you out with question 1. I have MTHFR and Factor V Leiden Mutation (both clotting disorders). I was on baby aspirin before getting pregnant and while I was pregnant up until 36wks. I had to have Lovenox injections once daily while pregnant until 36wks, then they changed it to Heparin injection twice daily. My son was born at 38wks, small but healthy. After I was discharged (I had a tubal too so couldn't be on blood thinners because of the spinal) I started back on Lovenox once daily and finally at 5 1/2 wks got the all clear to stop them. Yes it sucks and can be painful, but it is well worth it to get a healthy baby :) Good luck!

I am pregs and have some weight on me as well. I was so worried about it at first but now I feel moderately crappy everyday and just getting through the day chasing kids, keeping house and dealing with pregnancy has totally eclipsed any worry about weight! This is my last one, so after I finish nursing this one, then I will worry about getting this blasted weight off. I have way too much on my plate to stress over it now. Congrats on getting pregnant! I don't know about the medical stuff you mentioned, sorry! The main thing we mamas with some weight really have to do is go light on the sweets and try to eat a basically healthy diet to avoid gestational diabetes. Hope everything goes great and congrats!! :D

First off CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Second, you can't purposly lose weight while pregnant. I had all day sickness for the entire 9 months and that is the only reason why I lost weight. I'm overweight too, and there have been plenty of overweight pregnant women. Don't fret over it. Weight gain IS NATURAL while pregnant. For you, for me (i did eventually start to gain some weight), for the size 0 down the street. And everyone in between. I would highly suggest talking to you doctor about you concerns and don't keep this worry to yourself. Ask if you can do a super easy pregnancy yoga video. It helped me out a lot with relieving stress and just feeling better about myself. Ask you doctor and follow what he says.

I was quite over weight (I still am) when I got pregnant this time. I have lost over 20 pounds (not on purpose) and baby is doing great. Good luck and congratulations!
