Overnight Diaper Rash

J.-- the same thing happened to my son, and my pediatrician said it looked like jock itch. How funny-- a little baby with jock itch! It was red and angry like you desribed, and very itchy for my son. The doctor said to put Lotrimin AF (antifungal) on it, and it worked like a charm. The doctor also told me that the best prevention for diaper rash is to put Vaseline on the bum at diaper changes and especially at bedtime. My son's skin is very sensitive, so on the rare occasions when he wakes up with a poop or has diarrhea, he'll get a rash, and if Boudreaux's Butt Paste doesn't work, I'll use the Lotrimin, and it soothes his skin. Dr. Smith's diaper rash ointment is the best. If you can't find it at your local pharmacy it is probably behind the counter. Ask the pharmacist. My doctor always recommends this and it takes care of the problem immediately.

Just to note: Lotriman is an antifungal for yeast rashes, which look like little red bumps with white centers. If you child does not have these bumps, you'd be better off using A&D, Desitin, Boudreaux Butt Paste, Vaseline, or something of this sort. If he DOES have the little bumps with white centers, you probably need to take him on to the doctor to have a yeast rash confirmed; then you will be sure of what sort of rash it is, and you'll know what to look for the next time it happens.

Hi J.! I am the mother of two boys - 28 mths and 10 mths and I have had my fair share of experience with diaper rash. The absolute best thing (recommended by our pediatrician) is to rinse the skin with cool water to remove any bacteria from the skin which causes diaper rash. Warm water will burn the irritated area. Then pat dry the area. I even let my son air dry for just a couple of minutes before putting the newdiaper on so that moisture does not get trapped. Then I apply Desitin Creamy to the area. I have used almost all of the diaper creams and I have found Desitin Creamy to be the BEST everytime! then put the diaper on, but change frequently. Within a day, the rash is gone! Just remember to always rinse the BM off of the skin with water. That is the key!

You said it was a sudden occurrence, he'd never really had the rashes before... Did he have a new food that night before? My son used to get awful diaper rashes with acidic fruits like pineapple, oranges, tomatoes- even if it was mixed in a recipe.

The best thing we found after trying everything we knew (never heard of the Lotrimen idea... I'll have to try that next time around) was to just let him hang out naked outside in the shade on a sunny day. He dried out real good & the sunshine & fresh air was good for him. He loved it and it helped the rashes!

For a start STOP THE BABY WIPES. They do burn, even the non alcohol ones. I have used them on myself when out of TP. Use either cotton balls or a really soft face cloth. There is a great diaper cream called Graham Slam that was made by a pharmacist for his baby and it is great but you can only get it online. The website is called www.grahamslambaby.com It is wonderful.
Use cloth diapers. If you cannot find nice soft ones use any really soft cloth item that you have in your cupboard. I have used old T shirts as diapers when a baby has a really sore bottom. It does not matter what is on their bottom as long as it is not a disposable diaper. I am an older mum and go a lot by just pure common sense.
Also check for blood in his poop, if you see any go to a doctor.

I always used Dr. Smith's diaper rash creme - blue box, not every store has it so you may have to look around, Target usually has it and sometims Wal-Mart - always worked for us and others I know - MUCH better than other diaper rash ointments. It always gave immediate results, and helped prevent further rash when my kids had similar problems. That and corn starch powder together. Don't know about the Lotromin.

Could he be teething? When my kids cut teeth they would get the WORST rash- and yes, it seemed the wipes were burning them. Use baby washcloths soaked in water to clean them for a few days instead and try Dr. Smith's Diaper Rash cream. For some reason that stuff really works- my pediatrician recommended it to me.If you can't find it in the baby area- ask behind the counter at the drugstore. Not prescription but sometimes that is where it is. Let him run diaperless outside if you can- stick him in a little blow up baby pool- the water will probably feel good- or at least take his mind off his sore behind!
