Hi all,
My daughter (4 months+), is sick! She's coughing and sneezing. Which causes breathing problem.
what should we do? She is too young to take anything from the doctor.

What can I do next?

Hi T.,

Sick babies are no fun! For my constantly sick thanks to daycare baby, I use a warm bath filled with California Baby "Cold & Flu" bubble bath http://www.californiababy.com/colds-flu-aromatherapy-bubb..., I find mine at Longs. It really seems to help! So does the humidifier! Good luck!

Dear T.,

She might have some allergies. I would take her in to be seen by her doctor--they may want to change formula to soy products. When my son was born, I thought he had colds all the time, but it turned out to be allergies. Also, might want to allergie proof her room. (no carpet, check pillows, blankets, toys etc.) and you may already be doing this, but I found a vaporizer helped my son breath easier.

Prayers and blessings coming your way..

We have had the same issue. Our son is now 13 months but he was sick at an early age too. We used a hot mist humidifier all day long for over a week in his room next to his crib. The cool one didn't seem to help. That did help him. Add lots of salt to it and it will steam really well.

We also had to use an albuterol mask for a few days with him to help with the breathing issues. I would call your pediatrician and have him seen if it continues. Any fever??
Good luck

Hello T.,
I agree with the vapor bath stuff, Vic's also makes a baby vapor rub that i think you can use after the baby is 4 months old. If I were you I would look up signs of her not getting enough oxygen also (purple under the nail beds, purple around the mouth, etc). Our daughter (9 months old Sat) just spent 3 nights in the hospital because she couldn't breath and I didn't realize it (She had bronchiolitis).
Best of luck, a sick and sad baby is no fun.

We used this stuff called "baby noses" but it is basically just a saline solution for babies. There are a number of different brands. Drop a few drops in her nose, wait a few seconds and suction it all out with the bulb syringe. Baby might hate it, but my kids were happier after!

Also, you might slide a book or something under the crib/bassinet mattress to prop it so the baby sleeps on an incline.

and finally, my second baby had a constant cold thanks to the germy but loving older brother... We were given a nebulizer/inhaler when my daughter was so congested she was wheezy. It was hard for me to tell she was any different than just snotty with a cold, so it doesn't hurt to take a trip to the doctor if you have a sense that the baby is just miserable.

good luck. so sad when babies are ill!

Hello,
coughing and sneezing? there's not a whole lot you ca do about that, with a lot of medicines for infants being taken off the shelfs. You may just have to let it run it's course. One thing that could help is steam. If you Run a hot bath or shower and bring the baby in the bathroom for a little while to breathe the steam. It loosens up the mucus. You can call your doctor and see if there is anything else you can do, or an advice nurse. Good Luck :)

I am a big believer in the hot mist humidifiers also. Just make sure you put it far enough away where it isn't going to burn your daughter. They can be dangerous if it is too close. We also used to prop the head of the mattress with a pillow so they aren't lying flat on their backs. You can also suction out their little noses and even use a saline spray first (they make one for little ones, but check package to make sure ok for the age). We also love Johnson's vapor bath. I think it says on it not to use until baby is 6 months, but we used it before then with no problems on both our kids. Clears out their little airways and makes breathing easier. Also be pushing fluids (bottle or breast) to make sure she is staying hydrated. Then just watch for a fever or signs of illness, since at that age being all congested can lead to ear infections or other complications.
