Ovarian Cyst During Pregnancy

I have ovaian cysts and this is my third pregnancy, I did not have any with my other pregnancies but when I went in for my first appt and ultra sound they found three on one ovary, one measured 10cm, I also was seeing a midwife who suggested I see a doctor, who then I saw and suggested I see a neo-natal specialist saw them and they told me that they would watch the cysts and see me back in six weeks to see if I needed surgery because at that point I would be in my second trimester. I went back last week to the specialist had an ultra sound and the tech could actually see my ovary! (could not before in other US because of the cysts!) the cysts has grown smaller the 10cm cysts shrunk to 5cm and the other two cysts were practically gone! All I did was prayer and lots and lots of bed rest I put myself on! My husband and I had a miscarriage last year and we were not taking any chances with this pregnancy so I took it real easy and listened to my body when it told me to rest, I rested and so on, I did not push through anything from fear of it rupturing or twisting. Not sure if this helps but just what I experienced. I no longer have to see the specialists but will keep the doctor instead of the midwife...And needless to say they took this very seriously! They should be keeping a very close eye on your cyst with ultra sound.

If they doctor wasn't concerned, then you shouldn't be either. I worked with a lady who did have a cyst removed during her pregnancy without it effecting the baby at all. Talk to your midwife to ease your mind, but don't worry.

hi, i had one the size of an orange next to the baby, i had to have extra scans,( which was great ) and it shrank at each one, i was told if it didnt they would give me a c section and remove it at the same time if it hadnt shrunk, they arnt a problem generally, i was told that a lot of women have them and sometimes they dont say anything at the scan unless they are a certain size.

With my second pregnancy I had one. Now it is actually really common hence why no one was concerned at your first u/s. Mine actually ruptured and I thought the pain I was having with it was a miscarriage and spent a few hours in the waiting room of the er. Finally got in and was told it was probably the cyst but since I was so early in the prgnancy there wasn't anything to do but wait and see. Lucky for me it was just the cyst rupturing granted awful pain but the pregnancy was unaffected.
Odds are your midwife will want to keep an eye on it. Generally by week 12 it will be gone.

I don't want to scare you, because I think what happened to me was an almost worst case scenario, but I want you to understand it can be a big deal. Don't let your doctors act like it's not. I understand that it is probably not a big deal for most people, but you need to keep a good eye on it. Here's what happened with my oldest son:

At my 20wk ultrasound they found a cyst on my left ovary. My doctor told me "we'd keep an eye on it but it was probably no big deal." She never looked at it again. At 33 wks, on a thursday I had an appt in the afternoon and I asked her when we were going to do another ultrasound. She had to look at her chart to see how long it had been. We scheduled on for the next Thursday (1 Week). About 4am on Friday morning( the next day) I woke up in immense pain. Within half an hour I could not move. My husband took me to the Er. At 10am they came in to do an ultrasound and the Tech told me that the baby was really small and the cyst was really big. By noon we were having an emergency c-section.

The cyst had begun to get it's nutrients from my placenta, taking them from the baby. The cyst had started to rupture. That was why I was in so much pain. Had it ruptured, because of size and location, things would've turned out very differently, much worse for both of us. They ended taking out my left ovary, a 2.6 pound baby boy, and 3.14 POUND cyst.

Everything turned out okay. My baby had to be in the NICU for 5 weeks, but only to grow. He's perfect and six years old today. Still, if it's already that active, I'd see if there is anyway to remove it. My doctor told me in the visit where they found the cyst, that if it became active they could remove it without hurting the baby, but since she never checked it again we didn't realize how active it had become. Just please keep an eye on it, no matter what you decide to do.

I also want to mention that my cousin had an ovarian cyst rupture, and that's when they discovered she was pregnant. I'm not sure how small it was, but her and baby were just fine. I think it was about 5cm, and she was 6 or 7 weeks.

I had one in my second pregnancy that was so painful, they thought at first it was an etopic pregnancy. I don't recall any measurements, but I was 6w5d and it was considerably larger than the baby. They told me not to worry and at my 20wk u/s it was completely gone and I haven't had any issues since. It's been 3yrs. HTH!

I had a few during my pregnancy. One got bigger and finally burst---it felt like someone kicked me really hard. Then I was sore for a few days. Just keep an eye on it.

L. I had one that was 10x10x7cm I never had any trouble with it and it burst as my son grew when I was pregnant. They found mine at like 16-17 weeks and never any pain.

Hey, I had one with my 3rd pregnancy. I was about 6-7 weeks with her, and started to have a great deal of pain on my left side, it wouldn't go away, so fearful I was having a tubal pregnancy, I went to the "er", and they told me that it was a cyst that had ruptured, the baby was fine, and I'd just have to take Tylenol, and deal with it. The pain only lasted for a few days, and was bettered by the meds. I don't know how big it was since it ruptured before I even knew I had it. I hope that this helps!! Take care!
