Outings for 10 Year Old Boy

Volunteering. Some of the best times I've had with my kids have been when we've been serving others. It can also set him up for figuring out what he wants to do with his adult life and/or make connections he can use for internships, etc. Local shelters (both animal and human) always need help. Soup kitchens, ditto. Boys and Girls clubs, too. You might find interests you never even thought of. Good luck!

Once in awhile, go to live theater (look to local school performances to save money). Work in the garden. Play cards, dominoes, Scrabble, or other games. Plus the many fine other suggestions you've heard. My youngest son (I have 3 boys) is now 11, and I still treasure time spent reading to him before bed each night.

Have you tried geocaching? Lots of people love to do that. Hiking, fishing, boating.

Those all sound fun but my son has the most fun when he is playing with someone else. So arrange to go to the park with another mom, pack a picnic and bring Baseball stuff, badmitton stuff and a football and let them play. You get adult time and they get to play. I also take my son to the Skatepark and he can stay for hours and he loves it. (That is if he is into that.) There is also swimming at the Y or put him in a sport and you will meet the other moms and meet for play dates or take him to parks that have a creek and go creek walking or maybe hiking with freeze dried snacks. Have fun!!

I see you are in California. Plenty of mountains and water. Hiking does not need to be huge hills you will have problems with but could winding paths. Streams and lakes you can fish in Many boys just love fishing. Pack a picnic lunch and taking him up a path to a fishing area. If you do not feel comfortable setting it up yourself their are fishing boats etc. But really to start just go to target or walmart and get a cheap pole to start with but then go to a bait store to get your fishing license and information on the right time of bait etc.

It was already mentioned but Geocaching can be fun. It is a modern day treasure hunt. My boys 13 and 10 love it.

how about museums? do you have water nearby? boating, fishing etc.

Is he in Cub Scouts? As he gets older the BSA will teach him all manly things, plus it gets him out of your hair. I have a 10 yo boy.

Don't underestimate downtime. They need to learn to be quiet and read a book here and there.

Does your son have suggestions? I can't imagine living in this area and being bored.
Look in your local parks and recreation activities booklet and see what they have to offer.
Do you and your son enjoy animals? There is a petting zoo at Hagin park in Rancho Cordova. There is also a farm just south of Rancho Cordova (I believe it's actually in the Wilton area) where you could go and learn all sorts of things about plants and animals.
Do you have bicycles? Maybe go to the bike trail along the American river and just ride.
Explore new areas of the city. Get on the Rapid Transit and choose a stop. Get off and just walk around looking to discover what's around that part of town. Then get back on and go to another stop and do the same thing. You can even go up to Folsom on Rapid Transit and find new things to do there.
Perhaps my ideas of fun and recreation are too simplistic, but we just don't seem to have a boredom problem at our house.

Jelly belly factory in Fairfield. Train Museum in Sacramento. My daughter did caving at Moaning Caverns with her Girl Scouts. Checking out Boy Scouts is a good idea. My daughter also likes laser tag and the local indoor rock climbing places.

Is there a monthly parenting magazine in your area? Mine is Bay Area Parent (a branch of parenthood.com). Check out the calendar in the back of it. I would plan our weekends by that - we've been to a local sanctuary and they were able to pet a shark and make a necklace with a shark tooth on it. They include event cost (if any) in the description.

I also put together a 'ball bag' which is a rolling duffel bag filled with all kinds of outdoor toys - bubbles to bats to soccer and playground balls, etc. Some days we throw together a picnic, grab the ball bag and we're off.
