I have about 2 lbs of beef stew meat that I need to cook tomorrow, but am kinda sick of the stews I have been making lately.

Any ideas for stew that doesn't have a tomato-based sauce? Lately I've been doing lots of diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, black beans, chili powder type stew.

What can I do next?

I have no idea what ingredients you have on hand, but this is one of the highest rated beef stews on allrecipes, and does not have a tomato base.

How about beef stew? Just throw your beef in a crock pot with beef broth, carrots, potatos, celery, and whatever else you like. Add a packet of beef stew seasoning and maybe a little worcestershire (sp?) and little red wine and it will be delicious! Cook on low for like 8 hours or on high for about 5. Make some cornbread.......I think I will have this tomorrow myself! If you need a recipe visit www.allrecipes.com and just type in beef stew.

I do more of a beef gravy, sometimes I add red wine.

I cook mine on top of the stove and I start with browning the stew meat first. Then I use V8, beef broth, worchestershire and whatever spices that just "hit" me.

My stew is never the same way twice because I play with recipes and ingredients.

Hope you find something you like. I do like the Allrecipes site. I have used 2 chicken recipes from there this past week and altered them to our taste and they were a hit at my house!

Would you consider laening towards tropical? Maybe some pineapple or orange juice, beef boulion, and jerk seasonings, you can add red onion, mango, peppers, and plantains to bulk out your stew.

That would be a totally different direction.

good luck to you and yours,

One of my favorite stews is something we called Russian Stew when I was a child. It has been years since I've made it.

Stew meat
Corn
Sliced or baby carrots
1 bottle of Russian Dressing

Mix them up and bake at 275 for about 3 hours... until the stew meat is cooked. When it's done, put raw biscuits on top and let them bake till done. It seems like I turned up the heat before putting the biscuits in. They just have to bake for 10-15 minutes...however long it takes biscuits to cook.

The biscuits will soak up some of the sugary goodness of the stew mix. Oh my, this is such a good dish I may make it for dinner tonight.

I never make beef stew with a tomato base. I brown the beef in a little olive oil, add beef broth and vegetables including onion and garlic along with some herbs. I like using rosemary, thyme, marjoram, savory, cloves, pepper, or sometimes a prepared seasoning mixture. Often, I just open the spice cabinet and throw in whatever sounds good that day.
