Hi. My son has been consistanly potty training for about a month now. I have created him a big sticker chart where he gets to put a sticker on the chart everytime he goes "tee-tee in the potty". I also started giving him a sucker (dum-dum) everytime, as well, but he is starting to go 5-6x/day in the potty and that's a lot of suckers. It was okay when he only went once, but now he's getting good!ha! Does anyone have any suggestions on what other types of rewards I could use instead of candy. He has a ton of toys, so he doesn't need that. I thought of just doing the suckers for poo-poo only .... he's not doing that yet. Maybe that would give him an incentive to poop in the potty. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thank you SO much to everyone that responded! :) We are still using the sticker chart, which he LOVES!!! He only gets one dum-dum a day -- he knows this and it's working out great. I usually give it to him after supper sometime. He is getting so big-- *sniff, sniff* He is staying dry longer and longer each day, and is even waking up in the middle of the night to go tee-tee!!! So that's a big step, I think. We're still not pooping in the potty, but I'm being patient, and I know that one day it will come ... one day! :) Thanks again -- I'm using all of your suggestions a little!

Yeah, I am not a big believer in rewarding with candy. I am in the midst of potty training and a big hug, big claps and kiss have worked for me. My friend did a sticker chart for her child. When she received "x" amount of stickers she received a reward - a little trinket from the $1 store. You could do a special treat after "x" amount of stickers. That way you are rewarding him every time; however, he has to do it consistantly to earn the big prize. Maybe you could reward him with something he could play with only when he goes potty consistantly; or get something from the $1 store!

Change to one reward for a whole day of dryness. For poo poo we used the small playdough containers (the ones that come in a party pack) and it worked wonders.

With my first son, I used the candy rewards. But then I found he went dozens of times a day and wanted candy even for a dribble. So, I used the potty present. I bought a small toy and wrapped it up and made a spread sheet on it with 5 boxes. He got a sticker in it each time he peed - 2 stickers for poop. When the boxes were filled, he got to open the present. Then, the next present, we had 10 boxes he had to fill before he got to open it. I think we went up to 30 or 40 boxes before we quit. The presents got a little nicer as he went on. Like the first one was a rubber bug that cost a $1.00. The final one was a note that said he'd get a trip to Chuck E. Cheese. Some other things you could wrap - Hot wheels, coins for the piggy bank, a puzzle, playdough, a DVD, a book, coloring book and crayons (or any other art supply like markers, colored pencils, stickers, stamps, spiral notebooks - these are dirt cheap right now as school supplies are being clearanced). Or you could wrap up "coupons" to go to McDonalds for lunch, the zoo, Chuck E. Cheese, Rainforest Cafe, Build-a-Bear . . . My son loved shaking the present and talking about it, and he has always loved opening gifts, so this really worked for him. I think after the first couple presents, he had to stay dry the entire day to earn the sticker. He'd get a sticker in the morning for being dry all night and a sticker at bedtime for staying dry all day. Good luck!

How about money?? Like a nickel for peeing, and a quarter for pooping? Then at the end of every week, head to the dollar store to pick a prize or two. My kids love the dollar store, and have always loved having lots of coins that are their own. Just a thought, good luck..you are almost there!! ~A.~

Hi L., it sounds like you're doing a great job potty training! Maybe since he's doing so well you can change the sucker reward to a whole day of dry undies. Another suggestion is to switch to jelly beans or M&M's. They are small enough that you can give him one every time still without ruining his appetite or giving him a sugar rush.

PS I also have boxers (3 of them) aren't they awesome???

We used M&M's...not that I encourage him to eat candy, but 1 M&M for pee pee and 2 for poo poo worked for us and quite honestly it was way worth it!

One of the things we did for our son when he was potty training (we did this for #2) was to take him to the mall to ride one of those little $25 rides. He got to choose between that anda piece of bubble gum (or whatever the reward of the time was). Since it was something we never let him do, it was a real treat for him.

Find an activity he likes....chucky cheese...whatever and get a picture if possible. Let the stickers cover the picture then you get to go to chucky cheese. Find large stickers to use for poopy and that will help to cover up the picture faster. I am sure you find that for some reson, pooping in the potty is a whole nother ball game. Go slow and be patient. My 2.5 years old has been using the toilet for quite a while now but stills asks or now goes and changes herself into a pull up. For some reason it seems wierd to her. Both of the other 2 did the same thing. I started slow and soon they stopped using thepull up. It just took longer.

Register your email address on Chuckecheeses.com (I think that is the spelling of the site). Get some coupons through email and also download the potty training charts (worth FREE tokens when full).

You can take a coupon and get a LOT of tokens and then reward him with one every time he goes (or one at the end of a day that he stays dry). Let him collect them in a clear container with a coin-slot (so he can watch them add up).

If he does not know about Chuck E. Cheese's yet, this is a GREAT time to introduce him to it.

I hope it helps. :o)

Blessings,

P. <><

P.S. For poop, my suggestion is to have a favorite stuffed animal or a doll "poop" in the potty (I used tootsie rolls as the doll's poops). This might help him out. I agree that the suckers would be a great reward for this because this occurs much less frequently.

Chuck E. Cheese has a potty training reward chart where you can print it out and when they get stickers on every day for like two weeks they can get 10 free tokens. I am not sure if you like Chuck E. Cheese, but you might start a chart that has a big reward at the end so he knows when the last sticker goes on there that he gets to do that special thing or buy that special toy.

What about fruit snacks? You could open one package and give him 1-2 out of it.

You might want to try money. I was a care-taker of a little girl that I potty trained and she loved pennies. Every time she "went" she got pennies. Cheap, but effective.

Hi L.,

I know its still candy, but I keep a jar in the bathroom filled with peanut m&m's. my 23 month old LOVES them, and she gets one m&m when she goes potty. i feel like it might be smaller and easier to do several times a day than the dum dums... maybe?

i hope that helps... or at least maybe could spawn some more ideas!

good luck!
