Organic Skincare & Haircare

I'm looking for a good line of organic skincare and haircare for myself without parabens, SLS or other petrochemicals. I have tried Avalon organics baby shampoo, lotion and diaper cream on my son and their lavender body wash and all are nice. Has anyone used their shampoos or other products? I also tried Burt's Bees shampoo & conditioner but was not crazy about it. I'm looking for a gentle face wash, toner & lotion for sensitive/oily skin as well as a moisturizing shampoo, conditioner and a natural anti-friz product without silicone in it.

Hi E.,

I like the California Baby baby shampoo /body wash and Earth's Best by Jason products (diaper cream, sunscreen and baby oil). I have not tried the Avalon line.

Hi E.,
I swear by Arbonne products. They are completely free from parabens and other chemicals. They have a full line of face products and hair products. I also use the full baby line...my son has very sensitive skin. He has had no problems with this line. Give them a try.

Melalueca makes great skin care products without chemicals, and they make a complete line of household cleaning products. You have to be referred by a customer, so if you are interested, just P.M. me back.

Hi E.,

There is a website at http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ that lists many products and their ingredients, including what companies have promised not to use toxic ingredients. If that address does not come up, you can google Environmental Working Group. Evne some of the Avalon products which I have used are not so great in terms of their ingredients.
I have ordered online from a company - Vitacost. They are less expensive than stores for same products and list all ingredients.
I myself am looking for a good face wash, (older skin), moisturizer, etc. Good luck with your search, and I like what you said about bringing up your son.

best wishes,
H.

Be very careful. At times the term natural is not natural at all. I make vegan soaps, salt scrubs and shea and mango souffles and many times people ask what is in these things and when I say no preservatives they find it hard to believe. I find that things like olive oil and pure cocoa, shea or mango butter are enough for moisturizing and cornstarch is used for talcum powder. Also just so you know that many products may contain paraben and do not tell you it does and that is because when there is under a certain amount of it in the product the FDA does not regulate them to list it.
Also if using a soap know that a real bar of soap only contains vegetable oils, animal fat(sometimes), Sodium Hydroxide and water,(sometimes a fragrance or additive such as oatmeal, flowers, coffee, etc..) Just some advise.

For skin care I like Dr Haushka's products (I think that's how she spells it). My friend who is an aesthetician (I think that's how she spells it!) recommends them as her favorite products. The ingredients are very pure. Second favorite is Weleda's skin care line.

For hair care I like Giovanni's Organic Hair Care products, especially Tea Tree Triple Treat shampoo (best thing for my husband's tendency towards dandruff and very tingly) and 50/50 Remoisturizer (it's a conditioner).

What a great question!

AUBREY Organics! Aubrey is the first bodycare line to ever get organic certification. Bassically, you can EAT it, because all the ingredients are essentially food... They are 40 years old, reliable, and they work. My husband has seen Aubrey himself, the owner (son of an organic farmer) whip up concoctions from food items right in front of a crowd to demo his techniques. We love it! You can find it at a good natural food store, at Whole Foods, and in Upsate NY at Wegmans. They have a skin care regime with cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and mask for 6 different skin types oily through dry and everywhere in between. Everyone loves the way my babies smell after they use their Aubrey baby shampoo, lotion, and soap, too.

WELEDA is also EXCELLENT for baby care. They have high standards (European company with homeopathic influences).

If you are anywhere near Little Falls, check out Faces of Astarte, a natural skin care boutique owned by the best natural esthetician I have ever met... she's been an activist in the natural movement for decades and inspires me every time I see her.

I Love, love, love Shaklee products!! I have never used anything else for my son or for me! The baby wash/shampoo is really nice, as is the baby lotion. I use the skin care products and they are AWESOME!!!(They have products for normal/dry or normal/oily....cleanser, toner, moisturizer, etc.) Shaklee is a "green" company and they have been from the start, even before it was the "in thing" to do! In fact, their all natural, earth friendly products were recently featured on Oprah for Earth Day. It has become very easy to order online through the Shaklee website, and then it's all delivered to your doorstep. Give them a look. Good luck!

Hi E., I buy shea butter, and mango butter from mountainherbs.com I make a skin moisturizer using the shea butter, mango butter, olive oil, and coconut oil. I put my own scents in it. I also let my children make their own and pick out their own scents. They absolutely love it. Just mix it in a pot. My husband says that I can make a soap to by using an animal fat. I have not braved that one yet, but I will. Now I can relax when I am moisturizing my family and not worry about toxic chemicals.

Hi E.,
You should check on the website for "Skin Deep cosmetic safety data base." It lists every skincare item and rates it's safety. I have conditioner and shampoo by "Tate's" and it can be used for many things including facial cleanser, fabric softener/detergent, skin cream. It's so natural you can eat it, but it's expensive.

The only product line that I have found to be completely chemical free with non-toxic containers is Miessence from ONE Group. The products are certified organic which is your only real guarantee of being non-toxic. Many companies make claims like "organic", "non-toxic", "chemical free", etc. but when you read the fine print you will see that these claims are very misleading. Some companies don't even put their ingredients on their websites. BUYER BEWARE!!! It's very easy to be fooled by false claims.

Get familiar with ingredients and be sure to use the data base (someone else already provided a link or go to the skin deep link on www.ewg.org). Once you know what to look for, it's easy to spot products that are not what they claim to be. Sometimes even the distributors themselves are unaware how toxic some of the ingredients really are. Don't be fooled by pretty faces and nice skin either. Just because a product works well doesn't mean it's safe.

The Miessence line is not cheap but neither does it contain cheap fillers. I love the handsoap and have not required handcream since using it. See www.goodskinforlife.com.

hi E.,

i recently found a line on the web that sells eveything from vitmins to skincare. all their skincare products are absolutely natural...straight from the earth. they list the ingredients for each product on their site and you understand each and every one.

there is no alcohol, parabens or sls or other things that are hard to read on other products. the prices are great too. they do addd essential oils to their products but they do not smell the same as the mainstream stuff. i think this is b/c of the purity and that they are not adding fragrances. try it out and see what u think....warmly, M.

Hi E.,

You might be interested in a great website by EWG (Environmental Working Group). The web address is http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/splash.php?URI=%2Findex.php. It's a database where you can look up any products or categories and get their safety ratings. California Baby is good, so is Earth Mama Angel Baby. It's a great database! Best of luck.

try aubrey organics. it's the best stuff. i also use dr. bronners mild scentless castile soap. it can be a little harsh so i add safflower oil to soften it up. both companies are extremely reputable. actually, you may want to check out the organic consumer's assoc's website... dr. bronners along with oca are sueing many companies for labelling their stuff as "organic" and "natural" but loading their products with carcinogens like dioxane 1,4. they give a list of how many companies faired when randomly tested in labs for all different chemicals. dr. bronner and aubrey organics come out clean!

E.-
I have researched the chemicals in our beauty products for almost 2 years and also searched for truly non-toxic products that were not only pure but effective for a newly launched internet business. Avalon is decent. I would stay away from Burts Bees as they have bought out by Clorox and the ingredients are changing.
There are some really good products out there-but most are very drying due to the lack of emulsifiers. I promote and use John Masters hair care and love it. I have very curly and frizzy hair and it definitely helps without all the chemicals. If you want to learn about these chemicals and see my advised alternatives, go to www.beauty-with-integrity.com or www.beautywithintegrity.net . You will learn alot and maybe you will try some of my products. I hope this helps a bit. Contact me if you have any questions.
