One Swollen Ankle

Ok after I had my c-section I had major swelling in my hands, legs, ankles, and feet ( I looked like the stay puff marshmellow man) All the swelling is gone and my blood pressure is just fine, but one of my anles is still swollen. How do I get rid of the swelling. It makes my shoes( especially my cute boots) not fit well and it just bugs me visually.

What can I do next?

alternate heat and ice. 30 minutes ice, 30 minutes heat. leave both off for about an hour and then do the process like that several times. if that doesnt work, i would get it checked out. i think you can get one of those packs that go in the freezer from a rite aid or just your local pharmacy or walmart even maybe. they are like ice pack things, but you can also put it in a bowl of water and heat it up for several minutes for the heat part, those are amazing! hope things get better!

Go to your doctor and tell him you about your foot and tell him you want an echo.
My left foot did that when I ran... I love to run 5 K's. They did an echo and I have
mitral valve regurgitation. Now, I think mine is permanent but it can be nerves.
Have it checked out. Can't hurt.

Hi L.,
First, I would suggest trying what Viktoria (below) recommended: esp the warm / cool / warm; and lots of ankle-pumps.

If it doesn't do the trick, you *could* have secondary lymphedema caused by the C-section (often, women who've had mastectomies will get this in their arms). It is very easy to treat, but you need an MD to refer you to a lymphedema specialist for evaluation (often a PT or OT).

Take care!

Drink plenty of water and move around enough to help with circulation. Walking is great to help with swollen ankles as long as it's at an active pace (not stop and go or slow which can make it worse). Also, make sure you elevate your feet several times a day if you can. If it still doesn't go away, go to the doctor.
