Hi Mamas! I have quite the stack of old magazines sitting on my shelf and I need to figure out what to do with them. I don't want to throw them away. I thought maybe there might be somewhere that I could donate them. They are all "woman" magazines- ie First, Woman's World, Family Circle, Quick and Simple, Healthy Living, Woman's Day, Good Housekeeping, etc. I've cut recipes out of some of them but they are basically intact and usable. I thought maybe a school would want them for projects? Anybody have any ideas?

If they are not to old, retirement homes and assisted living facilities will take them to hand out to their patients. Doctors office usually will not take them because they usually subscribe to new magazines but you could try the free clinics. They run on donations and state and federal funding. The money is not for magazines. You could also run an ad in the newspaper for free magazines. I know the Northwest Herald does not charge for listing Give Away items. That way they come pick them up you do not have to deliver them.

Good Luck.

Hi A.:

Wow, you have a ton of great ideas already. This is what I do. Some doctor's offices (or test waiting rooms) have really old magazines. So, I I collect mine and drop them off at these offices or waiting rooms in the hopital. I found out about the waiting rooms when I was waiting for a test while pregant and had nothing to read.

Just a thought.

Recycle them - we have a service where we pay a nominal amount and they pick up our recycling every week. It is amazing what we were throwing away before that can be recycled! Magazines are included in what can be recycled, so look into that in your town!

If your 3 yr old is in daycare, they would probably take the magazines off of your hands. They do lots of projects where they allow the little ones to cut out pics they like.

Best wishes!

When my kids were in preschool and kindergarten they did projects that called for cutting pictures from newspapers and magazines. In pre-k, it was pictures of things that had a certain sound or started with a certain letter. IN kindergarten it was identifying groups. You could do somehting with your own little girl or ask the local school or church if they would like them.

I used to take magazines to a local nursing home. I don't know if they used them for the residents, visitors or projects, but they appreciated them. If worse comes to worse, put them in the recycling bin for your garbage pick up! If they don't have things cut out of them, sometimes libraries will take them. You would be surprised what people buy at library used book sales!

I take all my magazines and catalogs to my son's daycare because they are always looking for pictures for creating collages, etc. I also figure it gives them something to read when the whole center is down for their daily nap!

You could also ask the volunteer service at hospitals to see if they could use them for the patients to read,

Freecycle is a good place to give them away. If they are current and not cut up, you can take them to a book resale store (Half Price books) and get paid for them (not much, but it's better than throwing them out). You've gotten a lot of good answers on here...

I am preparing to do a collage class at Wright College & I could use all the magazines I can get. Let me know if you want me to take them off your hands.
