Okay So Lets Talk Nintendo Wii

Talking Christmas already! My son is going to be 3 the end of March and hes REALLY into Hooked on phonics and his learning Callou computer games (I cant believe he can work a mouse!). My husband has been unemployed for a few months and is the stay at home daddy until he goes back to work. I want to get them something they can both get up and get a little physical during these cold winter months while having a great time playing together. How do you and your families all like your Wii's and do they help to get your childrens need for "physical activity" during rainy nasty weather days? I really want to have something that will keep dad and son off the couch and up on their feet. Do they have educational games too? I know their is an abundance of sports games for it and they both would really enjoy that!

Aside from that idea I thought the Leapster 2 would be fab for my son, especially for long car rides! Reading the responses from a leapster request solidified that idea and I love that you can check their learning progress...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks Mamma's! I think we kind of decided to cross off the Wii idea and go with the Leapfrog toys instead. There was so much hype about the Wii when it came out but what I'm gathering is there are "Better things out there" especially for younger children. I'd much rather get something he will learn from and that is easy for him to do. His computer games have really taught him a lot and he LOVES to play them, so much so that we have to limit him. But since he started playing them he has really caught on to identifying shapes and colors and counting things. It's really fun for him, and it only cost us $5 on the discount rack! He's even drawing shapes on all his papers now. So cute! Thanks for your honest advice! Helped a lot!

I dont think theres lots of games for that age range. My son really got into it when he was 4 to 4.5. Because for most of games you have to hold one button whilte hitting another and a bit confusting.

I did see they have a similar one made by VSmile, Vsmile Motion, more aimed at the 3-7 agae group.

Hello,

We have a 3 yr old and 5 yr old. They both like the Wii but my three yr old sometimes has a hard time getting the concept of it etc. She loses interest really fast. However they are always asking to play it and we have had it almost a year now. I would say that if you really want one that you should get one. Your son will eventually catch on to the pointing of the remote etc and plus my husband and I have almost if not more fun playing it :).

A.,

I recently learned that their is a 'knock off' of the Wii that is made by either Fisher Price or Leapster...I think its FP. It hooks up to the TV and is wireless-same as the Wii-and comes with a baseball bat and other attachments-same as the Wii-only the games are sports related and educational...math while sinking hoops kinda thing and learning the letters while playing ball! It is for the younger guys and looks pretty cool! Might be worth looking into as a 'first game system' while he is still little...

We do have a Wii and I must say that after having almost ALL games systems ever made going back to ATARI, the Wii is hard and sometimes frustrating. Dont get me wrong the kids love it and enjoy jumping around and playing it...but for the lil' guys your sons age it can be hard to control the position of the cursor and such. Takes time to learn and can be frustrating for lil' shaky hands. Of course kids being kids, which are adaptable and amazingly capable at learning new things, they do and will get the hang of it rather quickly...and the Wii will probably be more fun for Daddy!
