Okay Ladies, I've Got a Carpet Disaster on My Hands! Please Help!

We recently took a trip to Detroit to visit my husband's parents. (Jan 23rd-February3rd) Our dogs aren't very destructive and are inside dogs so we let them stay in the house and had my mom and a friend letting them out during the day. The problem I didn't realize is that my Sheltie has reached puberty this go around and we haven't fixed him so he freaked out once he realized we weren't coming back anytime soon. After he destroyed the house my mom called me and I told her to have him put outside, which stopped the behavior, until bad weather came and she put him back inside for another day. There was a LOT of damage and 3 rooms have been urinated all over. My son's playroom and bedroom being the worst!

Now we are home and we have the house cleaned up quite a bit. (I can't put into words how bad it was!) We bought a new Bissel 2x pro heat turbo steam cleaner, the products that are recommended to go with it including the pet odor and stain cleaner and we've been treating any urine stains we can find. My son's playroom (whats meant to be a dining room) was attacked the worst. We have steam cleaned the whole room just as recommended for the severe case we have and the stench still won't go away. We have also sprinkled the Glade carpet powder on it and vacuumed it numerous times. We have opened the window in there and put a floor fan in there to try to air it out. It is just NOT going away. We've tried some febreeze which only seems to mask it for a few minutes and then back to stinkin it goes. I wouldn't be so concerned since we are moving in mid March-early April but this is where my son does all of his playing. My tiny house can't hold those toys in any other room. My son is 20 months old so he's still very close to the ground and spends a lot of time on the floor!

Anyone know of any remarkable products that have helped a situation like this? If so, please please please let me know! :) Thanks so much in advance!!! :)

So What Happened?

We bought a Bissel for pets. Did a wonderful job. Luckily we are finally moving and getting out of the house anyway.

Unfortunately the only way that you can get rid of the odor is to replace the carpet. My uncle tried everything just like you, even professional carpet cleaners. Good luck!

We use Simple Solution for urine stains and odors. It works differently than other products in that it uses enzymes to neutrilize the odors and get rid of them. You can get it at PETCO or Petsmart. There is another brand that does pretty much the same thing. I think it's Nature's Miracle, but I'm not sure. YOu really saturate the area with this stuff, so buy lots if you've got a big area. I think you will be impressed on how well this stuff works!! Good luck!!

We have a 4 yr old Yorkie that gets really angry when we leave him alone for any time at all and he has decided to urinate on my carpet, my husband googled urine stains and smells on the internet and we found a fantastic product. It is called SCOE 10X Super Concentrated Odor Eliminator. It was expensive but saved my carpet and the embarrasement of the odor when company comes over. Good Luck

I am sorry. We bought a used home once way back in early 90's and had issues with our dog sensing the dog from the other family's dog in the dining room. OMG....we even ripped the carpet up and out.....cloroxed the slab....then recarpeted. After that, we did not have an issue.

I have the Bissell Pro Heat and it is a great machine. Since our experience, we have always built our own home and I have used my own carpet machine. We do have dogs and we did have an issue a few years ago. My carpet is very light in color, almost white. I added a little clorox to my carpet shampoo machine and it helped a LOT. I did not see much difference in the color of the carpet. We also had a 3' x 2' area cut out and replaced, pad and all.

Of course, this is in the pad so it more than likely needs to be replaced. When we replaced the pad and carpet patch, I soaked the area in clorox. I know a lot of people here are not for bleach but I am a firm believer in it killing germs.

Good luck to you on this one. Pet stains/odors are one of the hardest to get rid of. I completely understand with your child being on the floor. That makes it harder for you.

Good luck and let me know if you get any magic tricks for carpet cleaning!!

R.,
The best thing for carpet odor of any kind is to sprinkle a lot of Baking soda on it and leave it for at least an hour or more . Put a lot of it on any spots you still have and let it set even longer . I do this all the time in my house and it works great for me . Good luck .. S.

Had that happen and it would not go away it was all over! We had to get our carpets professionally cleaned. You can find good deals and they are cheap to do a room! Good Luck!

Also there is a carpet cleaner named Folex that is awsome! You can buy it at Walmart. It works on everything I need a stain for!

We have 2 dogs that did something very similar when we brought our 3rd little boy home from the hospital. Both dogs, especially our beagle mix, went NUTS peeing all over the house, especially in our dining room. The carpet was soaked and stunk so bad. Goodness I tried so many things. The ONLY thing that completely got rid of the stains and the stink was Solumel. I swear by this stuff. It saved us tons of money in replacing the carpet. I even put a bit of Solumel (along with Tough and Tender) in my carpet steamer when I shampoo the carpets. Then they are good as new and smelling great! I buy it online from a great wellness company. Let me know if you'd like some!

Hi R.,
So sorry to hear what your dogs did. My dog, my really old dog, started getting to the point where he didn't want to wake us up at night to let him out. He found it was easier just to pee or poop in his bedroom and then go back to sleep. Needless to say, he was making quite a mess night after night after night. We cleaned it up, but not as well as we should have.

I finally called Carlos at Cleaning Solutions, phone number ###-###-####. He brought a black light over and we went over all the carpet in the house and found other places my dog had peed that we never found. He treated the carpet with an enzyme and then cleaned it. We went back over it with a black light to make sure everything was gone. He got feces stains and blood stains out of the carpet as well. When he finished, he raked the carpet (with a carpet rake) so it looked practically like new - except a little damp. I completely trust him, he has never ripped me off. In fact, last time when I needed the carpets cleaned, I went out of town and told him where I hid the key. He let himself in, cleaned the carpets, locked the house up, left a bill on the counter for me. And all was well.

I'm with the mom that says have it professionally cleaned once. It'll be worth it. Especially with a 20month old. Your son is probably still eating food that lands on the floor like my kids.

If you need more information on him, please don't hesitate to ask.

the urine is in the pad; you will need to pull the carpet back and pull out the padding & replace it. I have a lot of rental property and there is a product that I get at Lowe's that neutralizes smells; I have used it when a rodent died inside the wall. I think it's called X-O. It works by changing the molecules in the air, so it will remove the smell; it's pretty amazing. I did use it to remove cat urine smell in one apt, although I definitely did replace the carpet in that unit. good luck.

Baking soda followed by white vinegar does wonders. The vinegar does several things. First it kills bacteria, you can mop the kitchen floor with it even and it is safe for baby. The vinegar also does something else. It does not mask the odor but kills it. It also has a scent that is in the same family as what urine smells like to a dog. You will not ever smell it once it is dry but Fido will. If you scold him before you treat and after you treat making him smell the spot before and after you are basically "marking" over his scent to what he will quickly identify as your scent. It is a battle of territory and you have to win.
It also sounds like you are dealing with a dog that suffers separation anxiety. We have a sheltie that has it. We put her in a crate when we leave for extended periods of time. She is an angel now.

I would call TLC Carpet cleaners in Lewisville and get them out there fast to clean up. I wouldn't clean my own carpets with an issue like that.... carpet cleaning companies have solutions we don't have and they do a much better job.

However, I heard good things about the Solumel too. But I'd have it professionally cleaned anyway with the amount of mess you described, it sounds like it would be wiser.
