OGTT Again???

Hi all, I am hoping others will share their stories. I am currently 25 weeks pregnant with my second child. I had gestational diabetes with my first so my OB wanted me to take the glucose test early, at 20 weeks, I failed the 1 hr challenge test but passed the dreadful 3 hour OGTT at 22 weeks. Now she wants me to take another 1 hr test at around 28 weeks, around the same time when they normally test those who never had GD. We both agreed that I would most likely fail the 1 hour and opted to skip it and go right for the 3 hour test. I have never heard of anyone taking this test more than once during pregnancy. I know the chances of developing GD later in the pregnancy is greater due to weight gain, etc…has anyone else had this kind of experience?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for responding, it helped put my mind and my husband’s mind at ease knowing that there are others out there that also had to take the 3 hour test multiple times in the same pregnancy. I ended up passing the second 3 hour test and “at this time” my OB said she is not going to make me take it again…Thanks again for the support ladies!

I have never had problems such as these. But perhaps it is a perspective re-focus that you need. If you end up passing the glucose test a second time, great news! But since you had GD the first time, I am sure that your doctor wants to be extra sure this time.
It is an inconvenience, but medicine is rarely an exact science. If your doctor misses a diagnosis it would be awful for you and your baby.
As much as I hate receiving this advice myself, chill and take the test. better safe than sorry.
BTW-take my own glucose test for my second in 3 weeks.
Good luck

Hi, I have PCOS and was on metformin before getting pregnant so my OB/GYN tested me at 20 weeks and like you I failed the 1 hr test but passed the 3 hr test. They then tested me again at 28 weeks and I failed the 3 hr test. I think they do twice to make sure they're covered. In my case it was good that they did. Good luck with your second test.

With my first pregnancy I took the 3hr test twice. The first was negative but due to a family history of diabetes my OBGYN wanted me to repeat it. As it turned out I was positive but diet controlled. With my second pregnancy I was tested at 28wks and had no issues. Good Luck.

Ugh, I feel your pain! With my 2nd pregnancy, I had to take the 1 hour at 7 weeks and 24 weeks. Then I had to take the 3 hour which is so annoying! In my 1st pregnancy, I failed the 1 hour so badly, they skipped the 3 hour. But in both pregnancies I ended up having GD and having to take insulin shots. Its frustrating, I know. Hang in there!

Hi K.,
This is not abnormal for someone who had GD in the previous pregnancy, and who had an issue with the one hour challenge this time around, to retest later in pregnancy. Keep in mind though, that one in three women "fail" the one hour GTT.
Good luck!

I had GD with my son. I was able to control it with diet. 3 yrs later, I never developed it with my daughter. I can't remember if I failed the 1 hr test or not. But instead I had high blood pressure. So you never know, you may not get it this time around (wouldn't that be nice). My son is almost 5 and I'm still not diabetic (your highest at risk for developing type 2 within 5 yrs of a gd pregnancy). So hopefully you won't get it this time. good luck to you.

I had the 3 hour test twice in my second pregnancy. They said that even if you pass it first time you can still develop GD later on in pregnancy so hence having to do it a second time, if you are at risk of it. I passed it both times, but it is horrible!

I did have gestational diabetes carrying my first son. For my second son, I did have to take the test a few times, but passed each time, thankfully, just with watching my diet. It's just something I had to do (take the test) for my baby. Good luck!
