Hi ladies. I'm looking for obstetrician recommendations. We live in NW Portland, unincorporated--just north of Beaverton and I-26 and west of Forest Hights. Closest hospital is St. Vincent's. Preferably I'm looking for someone with high-risk/over 40 experience. No preference for male or female. Any recommendation is greatly appreciated.

Hi A.,
I highly recommend Dr. Gary Hoffman at the Womens Healthcare Associates in the Peterkort center, right next to St. Vincent's. He was my OB through two miscarriages and two high risk pregnancies (I was 38 & 40). WHA is such a wonderful group. I saw or talked to many of the other doctors there when things happened during odd hours of the night and everyone was very caring and knowledgeable. I am very grateful to have been cared by Dr. Hoffman & associates.

They are located Next to St. V in the Peterkort buildings. We just used them for our last pregnancy and they were so very good at what they do. Perinatal is a specialty for high risk. I hear all the Dr's are really good, we saw only three of them, Dr Tomlinson, Dr Abel and Dr Guinn. Guinn was my main Dr, she was great and we really like her nurse Cheryl too. Tomlinson seemed to be on call at the hospital each time I had to go to labor ad delivery, he was very nice, and he was on shift the day we started my induction. Able was the Dr that we ended up having for my delivery, he was very good at explaining to me my options and risks. I had to have an emergency c-section and was very scared, he talked to me about my fears prior to the surgery which I appreciated a great deal. Dr Guinn unfortunately was on vacation the week I had to deliver or she would have been there.

All the staff was very nice too. My husband attended all my appointments and he was always warmly welcomed.

Hope this helps.
Angie

Northwest Women's Clinic just moved their SW office to Barnes Rd near ST. V's. They have some great OB/Gyns and pleanty to choose from (tho' I recommend Dr. Roberto De Castro)
They also have an office in down town NW near Good Sam.
###-###-#### for the NW office as I'm not sure if the # changed for the move to Barnes Rd. Appointments can be made for both locations at either office.

I second the recommendation to Columbia Women's Clinic at Saint V's. Someone recommended Dr. Susan Payne; she helped deliver my first born and she was wonderful. My doctor at that clinic is her partner Dr. Elizabeth Reindl. I have been with her for the past five years including two pregnancies and some emergencies and she and the office has always been great in taking care of me. They are also quick to get back to answer phone questions/schedule urgent appointments etc. I found this to be VERY important when things went wrong.

I absolutely LOVED my OB- Dr. Marni Kwiecien. She's at Women's Healthcare Associates in the Peterkort North Building right next to St. Vincent Hospital, which is where she delivers. She is amazing. I hope that she delivers all of my kids in the future.

side note--
I won't ask for details, but if you are only over 40 (and not otherwise high risk), last I heard, the statistics were high risk for the pregnancy, but the *birth* was no higher risk than for younger women ... I don't know for sure that that's still true, but most over-40 women I know are perfectly physically capable of birth :).

I just offer this so that as you approach that part of the process, you know going in that you don't need your caretakers tossing extra fear (or unnecessary medical interventions) your way ... a piece to keep in consciousness. Perhaps a piece to keep in consciousness, as you interview OBs ... the key phrases I kept running into were things like, "well, we'll try it, but usually ... " or the complete (although understandable) sellout, "the hospital requires me to do it that way (to maintain my contract and ability to practice at the hospital)".

I ended up with home-birth midwifes because the medical system and I didn't see eye to eye (as you can probably tell), so I have no OB recommendations ;) ... SIGH. (I *tried* ... I actually worked in the hospital system in statistical research(!) when I got pregnant ... but it just was never going to work.) Midwifery was one of the best choices I ever made ... but, although an advocate, I am also firm that mothers should choose what feels like the best care for their particular birth situation, and that decision includes choosing the environment in which you will feel safest--because feeling safe and protected is the primary driving factor in being able to have a healthy, good, and no-complications birth.

Especially if you choose a hospital, I'd recommend choosing a secondary birth attendant (besides your husband, since if he is there presumably you will want him to pay attention to *you* ;) ) who can run interference with the hospital staff and keep your care focussed and coherent, with or without your OB and during shift changes. A professional doula or a friend who is on your birth-plan page and won't themselves cause stress and bother for you ...

God bless you and your family with your pregnancy and birth--congratulations :)!
