Hi Ladies,

I'm new to this forum, but heard it's a good way to get advice from others' experiences. I'm looking for a new OB/GYN and would like one who delivers at Provena St. Joseph in Joliet, IL. Does anybody have a recommendation for a doctor or experience with this hospital? I would appreciate it!

What can I do next?

I highly recommend Dr. Russell Khater. He's on Larkin, just South of Ingalls (1114 Larkin). (He has a practice with his dad, but I've really only seen Russell.) He's delivers at both St. Joe's and Silver Cross and, believe me, EVERYONE at the hosptials know, like and respect him. I'm currently PG and whenever I mention his name, 80% of the time, the staff (from those taking appointments to the labor coaches) - - all chime in with something nice to say about him.

Him and his dad were featured in a 2 page article in the Herald News about a year ago as well.

He was named a 2007 Medical Staff Officer at St. Joe's:

I used to see Dr. Mary Fitzgibbons and I have to say that she was fabulous! She did not deliver any of my babies, my beyond-wonderful OB that did moved away. He referred all this patients to Dr. F and so that's where I went. Once I saw her I realized she had been present for my daughter's birth at Rush (c-section on a preemie with a heart defect.)

My kids also used to see Dr. Bierma, and he is great!!! I still pass on "Dr. Doug's Magic Butt Cream recipe."

However, we changed all our docs because none of them went to Edward. I had one horrid experience with Provena St. Joe...their pediatric ICU doc nearly killed my daughter by not being actually at the hospital and therefore not knowing how ill she was. From that point on we knew that it was not a great hospital for kids with anything out of the ordinary. (And I really want and need a great hospital for my family.)

I did deliver my son at St. Joe and it was a good experience. The NICU was fabulous and the neonatalogists were good. (My son was born too quickly and so he didn't get all the fluid out of his lungs.) My daughter had to be born at Rush due to her heart defect and we had high-risk docs there.

I think St. Joe is a decent "small town" hospital. They did not have the expertise to deal with what my child needed, so we can't continue to go there.

(Oh and for what it's worth about the pediatrician, Dr. Bierma and Dr. Moore in that practice were ALWAYS on top of my kids' needs. We still miss them and would go back in a heartbeat if they were on staff at Edward. It's just too difficult to have an off-staff doc when your child's in the hospital.)

Dr. Umpai delivered 3 of my 4 children and I still go to her every year for my check up. She is wonderful!!!! Her office is on Essington Road. Everytime I see her she asks about my whole family. She really cares about her patients and takes time to talk with you whenever you have a concern. The ladies in her office are great too!! She also delivers babies at Silver Cross hospital. I just can't say enough about what a great doctor she is!!!!

I had 3 of my babies with Dr. Umpai whose office is about 3 - 4 minutes from the hospital. She is wonderful and has also delivered most of my girlfriends babies too. She has been doing this for over 20 years and is fantastic. Her office staff and support nurses who work for her are incredibly nice, friendly and supportive and they have been with her for a long time too.

Best of luck!

E.,

I am the proud mother of the former Chair of Pediatrics at Provena St. Joseph in Joliet. He is a pediatrician and his practice is in Shorewood which is just on the west side of Joliet. I know with all my heart he is a fantastic pediatrician. His Name is Dr. Doug Bierma. If anybody could tell you of a good OB/GYN it would be his office. In fact my daughter-in-law delivered 2 of her 4 babies at St Joe and I was there for the 1st one born there. (The first 2 were born in Grand Rapids during his residency). It is a fantastic OB/GYN dept. Wish there was something like that when I had my babies. Doug's office address is 700 W. Jefferson Street, Shorewood, IL 60404---###-###-####. I am not positive, but I think my daughter-in-laws OB/GYN is in the same building. God's Blessings to you and your babies. Grandma Barb

E.,
I have been going to Joliet Women's Health Center in Joliet for over 12 years. Dr. Casey Moauro (male) and Dr. Mary Fitzgibbon are there and they are both wonderful doctors. The office staff is not the "friendliest" but you cannot go wrong with the doctors. They are always willing to sit and answer any of my questions, no matter what they are of how long the explaination takes. Their phone number is ###-###-####.

Also, I must comment on Dr. Bierma in Shorewood. He has been the ped for both of my daughters and my soon to be born son. He is the absolute best doctor that I have ever come into contact with...ever. He has more patience than you could ever ask for in a doctor. You know when you are dealing with your children and they are sick and you have questions, that every bit of information and advice is priceless. This man is priceless. I refer every single one of my friends to him for their children.

Good luck to you.

I just delivered my baby at St. Jo with Dr. Daniel Beck. He's office is a block away from the hospital. I met him thru recomendation from my other OB/Gyn that had to move out of town.
Dr. Beck is great. He's willing to spend time with his patients, explain everything, very patience.
Congratulations and good luck with your pregnancy.
