Nutrition After Switching to Milk

My son just turned one and we have switched him from formula to whole milk. I want to make sure he's getting all the nutrition he needs since he's not on formula anymore. He's teething pretty bad now so he's a picky eater sometimes. My mother-in-law says on the days he doesn't eat very well, I can give him some pediasure at some point to make up for missed vitamins. Any suggestions??? What do you think about the pediasure??? Is it worth trying?? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Talk with your pediatrician. The easiest way to combat family "suggestions" is to have information from the doctor. Then, if she says he doesn't eat well, you can say, "The doctor says he's fine, he's gaining weight and is healthy."
S/he should also be able to tell you the best places to get the nutrition missed in giving up formula.
Good Luck:)

I would not use the pediasure unless your doctor says to. They usually only have children who are under weight or who have strict diets due to food allergies drink pediasure. When my oldest daughter turned one and switched to whole milk she was not a very big eater yet. I was also worried she wasn't getting enough nutrition. What I did was I bought the Similac Next Step formula (or whatever brand you use). It's formula for older babies (9-24 months). I just gave her one or two sippy cups of this a day as well as her whole milk. Once her appetite picked up a little better I just stuck to whole milk. Hope this helps!

we went through this last month & I found that cherrios are WONDERFUL LOL they have the iron that the milk doesnt offer & the kids usually love them. my little man started getting his molars this past week & hasnt been eating really well but Cherrios are still a go w/ him. Tristin will not TOUCH pediasure. he hates it we've tried flavored & plain & mixing it... he just hates it. if your lil guy will drink it... i dont think it would hurt anything to give it to him from time to time... but it really doesnt do much good here for us. we use propell fitness water from time to time mixed w/ regular water. that way he gets a few extra vitamins & is drinking water in place of the many juice cups LOL (my son's a drinkaholic) he's always got to have something handy to drink. good luck in the fight for nutrients!! LOL

When we made the switch to milk, my pediatrician recommened we give our son Poly V Sol drops, basically multi-vitamins for infants. We tried the Pedia-sure when we took William off the bottle because he refuses to drink milk out of a cup, but he didn't like it. In that situation we were also worried because he wasn't getting the vitamins from the milk, and again the pediatrician said the multi-vitamin and just to supplement with other dairy products. So I think trying the multi-vitamin mixed in his milk should work. Or at least it would be worth a try :) Good Luck!

The wonderful thing about kids is they listen to their bodies without really knowing it. When they are hungry they eat. When their body requires a certain vitamin..they want a certain food. Now this isn't the same for all kids but my point is..if he's hungry he'll eat. As long as your are making sure that he's getting good wholesome foods...dairy, vegies, breads, fruits etc. he'll be fine. You don't want to make it a task and make a big fuss over his eating habits...this will just make it worse. Just keep a watchful eye that he's just not getting fried food or cookies or junk food, but rather eating healthy foods when he does want it.

I LOVE Pediasure! My son has autism so he's one of the pickiest eaters out there. We give him 2-3 cans or bottles of pediasure a day and he's never sick and growing right on schedule. Obviously, on the days he eats better reduce the amount so he doesn't get used to drinking his meals but it's a great substitute.

I use the pediasure all the time, mine son is 18 months old going thru the 2 year molars. The dr. hasn't complained yet on the way he eats since he is very picking, I can't get him to eat any kind of veggie yet. You will soon find what works and doesn't work

Your doctor will tell you that its ok as long as he is growing fine. He's probably still drinking alot of bottles of milk and that really fills them up. I wouldn't worry so much since he is drinking whole milk. I went thru the same thing with all 3 of my boys ( still am with my 2 1/2 yr old). I never used pediasure but it sounds like a great idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
