I'm looking online to purchase a nursing wrap. I haven't had much success covering up with a blanket while nursing in public. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a brand for a nursing wrap that you've liked a lot.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the GREAT ideas! I didn't even think about making one. My mom sews so I'm going to get together with her to find a real neat fabric and have her make me the wrap.

With my third child I finally decided a blanket didn't work either! I didn't by this one, but I ended up copying the pattern and making two for myself, and I have loved them! The site where I found them is http://bellies-beyond.com/shop/index.php. Pretty much it's a drape that goes over one shoulder, covers front and back, and latches under the other arm. These might be heavy for the summer - I made mine out of a lightweight cotton-poly blend. Hope this helps!

I use a cami tank that has a shelf bra in it, i also wear my nursing bra under it and always wear a button up. I am able to leave teh top button buttoned and then unbutton the next 3-4 and just move the tank down a bit and unhook bra. it works great and nothing is showing. I also have the maya wrap and it's awesome!! The tail for me is long enough that I am able to wear and nurse and no one knows what's going on.

As I answer this question, I'm assuming that you're looking for a nursing cover-up, not necessarily a wrap-style baby carrier (like the Moby).

I found out about this product from a friend who uses it, and I've grown to love it too. Look up Hooter Hider or Bebe Au Lait. (They're the same product, manufacturer, and price -- just different names/ labels. The original name is Hooter Hider but I guess some people didn't want to wear something with a label that said Hooter on it.) It's kind of pricey for something so simple, but worthwhile for me since I don't sew. It's definitely easy to use and big enough to provide coverage. It has a little terry cloth pocket in one corner that I use to stash my breast pad while I nurse, and the pocket is also good for mopping up little messes. Best of all, the neckline has a wire in it that holds it away from your collar so that you can look down and see your baby.

It's saved me a lot of money because I haven't had to buy any nursing clothes other than bras. And, it's saved me a lot of trouble for times when I fumble with switching sides.

The only downside is that it can get a little too warm sometimes, but I think that just would come with anything that's thick enough to be opaque.

This link will show you my favorite. I got it with my second child and I wished I had it with my first. It worked great and I always felt comfortable nursing in public with this wrap. And, it is so cute! It is called Nursing Cover by Bebe au Lait. And, you could look it up on ebay or other websites and might find it a little cheaper or on sale somewhere.

What?! No ones mentioned those nifty nursing hats for babies? That's my vote for when you have to coverup. Blankets are too hot, at least for middle Tennessee. Let's see... they're at http://www.moboleez.com/

And apparently free shipping at http://www.clothbabies.com/moboleez/moboleez.htm

Hi C.!

Congrats on the birth of your baby! I've always had great success with and loved the Maya Wrap for all 3 of my children. They have beautiful fabrics to choose from, it comes with an instructional DVD/video and a handout too. http://www.mayawrap.com/

If you google wraps/slings you should be able to find others as well. I know it can be overwhelming to decide.

Also, another poster mentioned not using a blanket at all. I wanted to add that I started wearing a tank top with a button down shirt over top of the tank. When my baby wanted to nurse, I could easily lift the tank top and nurse my baby. The outer shirt covered my side and nursing in public was done very discretely.

Hi C.:

Understand that breastfeeding in public can be a challenge. I've tried using a large blanket while at a park and with all the maneuvering, feeding doesn't become a discreet act.

Recently, I bought a nursing wrap from Bebe Au Lait from the Babycenter.com website for about $30 and really like it. They have very cute designs and often times, the website offers discounts & free shipping depending on how much you buy. The nursing wrap is shaped like an apron you put over your body but on the top, it has boning so you can see your baby while nursing.

I think First Years (you can buy at Babies R Us or Target) makes a nursing wrap at half the price but the it doesn't have the boning on top & the reviews I've read aren't great.

Good luck and hope this info helps!!

There are a couple of nursing cover brands called Bebe Au Lait and Hooter Hiders. Specialty baby gift shops usually carry them or you can order them online through several websites. They are very popular and chic, come in a variety of colors and prints to suit your taste. I did not have one for my kids but I have given them as gifts and people love them! If we have another baby, I will definitely be buying one for myself!

They have nursing covers at Babies R Us that have a vent on top so you can keep an eye on baby and you don't have to worry about him getting too hot. CONGRATULATIONS on the new arrival and your miracle babies!

The wrap sounds great, but I wondered if you're opening your shirt from the top or lifting it from the bottom. If you lift the hem of your shirt and unhook your bra from the outside, you can hold the baby in front of you and pull up the shirt just to the nipple, and as soon as the baby latches on there's nothing showing but possibly a little belly or side skin, depending on how loose your shirt is. Then instead of covering yourself and the baby with the blanket, you hang it over your arm to cover the belly skin if your shirt is tighter. This method worked for me, all my friends, and all my sisters except one step-sister, who said her babies couldn't stand anything in their faces and never covered up at all. I think she was just a militant nurser, as all three of her babies apparently couldn't stand it, and all 14 of the other grandchildren in the family did just fine with that method.

Occasionally the baby will let go and you might flash a little skin for a few seconds, but you can quickly push the shirt down over your breast when that happens. Small babies usually won't expose you, but as they get older and look around, they're more likely to move their heads away. But by then you'll be good at covering up.

Hi C.~
I know of a great product that I've used myself. It's just called a sling. You can only get these in St. Louis, there are locally handmade. They look like giant scarves, but they have multiple purposes. You can use it as a breastfeeding shield. There is total privacy as it covers up baby and you. You can also use it as a carrier. This can be used as long as you can physically hold your child. For your 2 month he can sit facing you or facing the world (it also helps with head/neck strengthening). With your 3 year old you can do a "piggy back" wrap. I think these sell for about $40. I love mine, we used it quite a bit. It didn't make me sore like the commercial carriers that are sold. Plus, it can be used for breastfeeding. Check out this website http://www.kangarookidsonline.com/
This will also give you instructions about how to use the sling and the many ways you can use it. Good luck! Email me if you have any other questions or if you decide to purchase a sling and you have questions about it.

Nursing cover up that is wonderful is Bebe Au Lait. The shaw types of nursing cover-ups are not very good. If you get one with a busy pattern on it you can throw it in your diaper bag, purse, or stroller and not worry about seeing spit-up or wrinkles on it (not that we really worry about wrinkles with a new born :-) ). If I wasn't still using mine I would sell it to you...but we want one more. Go with a good brand...don't look at the price b/c with these you get what you pay for.

The best nursing blanket that I found was at a fair in Alaska, she sales them online at www.alaskakraftswithkare.com. What I liked about hers compared to others was it is very lite weight and my son never got hot under it even in the summer. It fits well around your neck and was not uncomfortable. She has many different patterns for boys or girls. The best part that I liked about it was that she only charges $8 a blanket.

MayaWrap.com or Ebay. I bought my Maya Wrap and my nursing cover on Ebay. I didn't use my Maya Wrap for nursing, but you can. Any nursing cover that goes around your neck and has the peep hole should work great. The store bought covers suck. I know a lady that makes them if you're interested.

Target had a really great nursing cover ($10). it goes over your head so the baby can't pull it down, its black, breathable and washable. Yan also get a clip (like you would see at the dentist) and clip a blanket around your neck! YOu can also concider breastfeeding in the changing room. and ask for a booth at a restraunt

The nursing wrap that I have I actually got in the store, but you it is probably online as well. It is made by The First Years company. I got it at Target for either 14.99 or 19.99. It is simple and plain black but it works. I love it! I can nurse both my babies under it for now.

I can! I make one called an Undercover Mother that is great. It has snaps so it stays securely around your neck but you still have plenty of space to peek in at your nursing baby. I make them out of lightweight, fun fabric so you or your baby don't get hot.
I had the same problem with my son, he liked to show the world my boobies too. Feel free to email me about more info! ____@____.com

My son hated being covered when he nursed, so I just wore clothes that I could conceal while I nursed. Shirts with buttons, Stretch tanks with a cardigan, stuff like that or place a blanket over the exposed skin so I would not make anyone in my presence uncomfortable.

This is just in case the wrap that you and your mother fashion does not work.

Good luck and God bless,

Have you ever been to etsy.com? it's an online site for people who handmake goods to sell their stuff. I love this site because i personally list stuff there but also because of the creativity you see. I suggest going there. You'll likely see many different types of wraps made by experienced moms and you'll have many to choose from. Good luck!

My sister-in-law used the Bebe au Lait cover-up and loved it. I am 17 weeks pregnant and planning on purchasing one to use when I nurse my new little one.

She used it when we were at the beach for a family vacation. It was great because she didn't have to seclude herself several times a day from the rest of the family but was still covered while she was around the rest of us. She was even able to use it at the pool.

I myself am not much of a coverer in public. My shirt and the baby's head seem to cover everything up front, and I always just wrapped a blanket around my back and mid-section to keep my love handles and such from showing. :)

Friends of mine are big fans of the Hooter Hider (aka Bebe au Lait--exact same product with different labels). And one friend even found simple instructions by doing a web search on how to make your own. Good luck!
