I'm 30 years old and my entire life have been very irregular, it has been a year and I'm still not pregnant. I'm scared that due to this I will never be able to get pregnant. I want to do to find a doctor that would be able to help with this problem. Has anyone been in my situation. This week has been especially difficult as I've been to two baby showers for friends. My best friend is having her first child and I feel terribly depressed and am finding it difficult to be around her. I'm happy for her, but at the same time it makes me grief stricken that I don't have child of my own.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

1/26/09- Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to sit down and respond to my post. It gave me such hope and relief when I was reading them. I slept the first worry free night in about 2 months on Friday. You all are such a gift to me!!! After speaking with my husband we have decided it is time to go to a specialist. Today I called Dr. Doody in Bedford and tonight I will be doing all of the paperwork so that we can get an appointment asap. I will keep everyone updated on how things are going and hopefully in the next few months I can be able to post telling everyone that I'm pregnant. Please keep me and my husband in your prayers. Much Love, Mel :-)

I too experience highly irregular ovulation. We just used ovulation predictor test strips from the drug store and git pregnant. it sounds simple, but it was the only way to know when I was ovulating.

Hang in there.

Dr. Doreen Mosier in Grapevine is a great doc to see for women with infertility problems. She will probably meet with you and suggest starting an HCg shot regimen. Relatively inexpensive... about $150 dollars for the shots.

M. - If you haven't already, I *highly* recommend that you get the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler and using that resource (or some other method), chart your cycles for a few months. It will be a lot less expensive and invasive than seeing a specialist, and will help you either pinpoint the problem or at least rule out some issues. It's really amazing and empowering to have this insight into what your body is doing every month, and you will have that much more knowledge when and if you do need to see a specialist.

I highly recommend my fertility dr and his staff:

Dr. James Douglas
http://www.ivfplano.com/

After 8 years of trying, 6 miscarriages, and a divorce, I found a great guy a few years later and we were able to get pregnant with the assistance of Dr. Douglas. Previously I was going to the Doodies in the HEB area. I went through 2 laproscopsies with them, the second of which I do not believe was necessary. They did not catch my condition. After only 3 months with Dr. Douglas, I was able to achieve pregnancy and maintain it. I have a beautiful miracle in my 19 mo baby girl.

Don't lose your sanity. If it is possible, he can get you there.

Good luck and God bless!

M.,

I was having fertility problems after my 1st daughter was born. We tried for a long time to conceive again, but to no avail. When to Texas Healthcare on Rufe Snow (they have an infertility specialist there who I was referred to). Upon examining me they knew exactly why I wasn't getting pregnant. After two rounds of treatments, I was able to conceive again. I saw Dr. Martin Read during my pregnancy and to this day, I still miss him and the staff. They were amazingly sweet and even though they see babies born every single day, they still make me feel as though my baby was the most precious thing they'd ever seen. I highly recommend this facility. (Just watch out... I had twins!).
I pray that you will be successful in getting pregnant and that God will guide you to being the best mother you can be.

I know it's hard, but try to RELAX about it - have you heard the stories about women who couldn't get pregnant, adopt, then have their miracle baby? They're true! My boss adopted a baby girl then had the 'miracle' little boy to complete their family, because once she got her baby and destressed, it took care of itsself! Use your ovulation monitor and have lots of great, fun, exciting sex and it will happen for you I'm sure! Hang in there! Prayers and Blessings to you, your hubby and your baby to be!

Hi M.,

I totally understand what you are going through. You have received some great advice. I got pregnant with my first son very quickly. One year later got pregnant again to lose it after 13 weeks. After about a year of trying and going through depression and you name it I switched doctors and she suggested I go see Dr. Lee, a fertility doctor in the Los Colinas area. I thought his office was great very personalized and he is awesome! He is in Los Colinas and if you would like his info let me know. To make a long story short I am now 20 weeks pregnant with twins and everything is going good so far. The fertility treatments were suprisingly inexpensive. good Luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Are your irregular cycles too short, or too long? I had the problem of them being really long, like 38-50 days. Turns out I had PCOS. Once I realized this and knew when I ovulated with ovulation predictor kits, pregnancies were conceieved naturally. It was VERY frustrating at first because all around me at church, work, and my best friend too were all pregnant. I did have the HSG test to make sure that my tubes were open. Then the next month I was pregnant with my daughter and now again I'm expecting a little boy in May. With both of these pregnancies I didn't ovulate until cycle day 31! So for the first year when we were trying, we were just trying at the wrong time b/c I didn't know that my follicular phase was so long. Good luck!

I stopped ovulating b/c my cycles were too short. Clomid fixed that and my son turns 4 on Sunday.

My cousin had very irregular cycles. She tried Clomid, IUI, and finally got pg with IVF. Good news is that she got pregnant on her own about 2.5 years later her son was born.

Knowing you had irregular cycles, I'm surprised you waited a year. I was lucky that my doctor let me start infertility stuff after 6 months.

Find a doctor who will help you ASAP. I'm sure there are women who can give you a great recommendation.

I have the same problem. My husband and I tried for 2 years to get pregnant. My doctor told me that he would have to help me get pregnant. He told me to start taking prenatel vitamins. So I did that and I told my husband that maybe we should wait awhile. I wasn't ready to go through all the stuff. That was in April 2007. In may 2007 we got pregnant on our own. Stop trying so hard and it will happen. I was so shocked!! We have a beautiful baby girl. I know how you feel about being around your friend. I was like that with my own sister. My doctor is Dr. Randal Burt. He's at Plano presby. Good luck and I hope you get pregnant soon!

Hi M.,

I had the same problem, and I can totally relate! It was very frustrating and hard to see your friends get pregnant as well. The good news is that you still have many options to try. My periods were always irregular, and I could go for a long time between them. My OB/GYN tried Clomid for several months to try to get me to ovulate, and then when that didn't work, she sent me to a fertility specialist, Dr. Kaufmann. Let me tell you what...he's the best! I got pregnant the first try with an IUI, and now I have a beautiful 4 month old boy! You sound like you have exactly what I did, which I have since realized is pretty common. Dr. Kaufmann is located at the Ben Hogan building at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth and is great! Don't give up because I was very down when it took me over a year to get pregnant, and now I am blessed with a beautiful child! Good Luck!! :o)

Hi M., I have been in your shoes and I am now pregnant. I really recommend you join fertilityfriend.com it's free for the first 30 days but I recommend paying the fee because then you get to join community groups that are very supportive during your conception time, I've made some great friends. Also I used ovulation sticks and you can buy these online at a very low price on earlypregnancytest.com

Good luck and hand in there.

Hi M..
My girlfriend went through the same thing- 2 years of trying before she found out she wasn't ovulating. 6 months of Chlomid which only made her more depressed & gave her horrible mood swings. She finally went to an accupuncturist- Dr. Park at Preston & Forest. She went for a few visits, followed his nutrition plan & drank the herbal tea she got from him. That was August- she's due in May! She got pregnant almost immediately. After she got pregnant she found out from at least 5 of her friends that that's how they got pregnant, too. She was upset they didn't tell her about it sooner! I'm not sure why people don't talk about accupuncture, but it sure seems worth a try- and safer than all the hormones they pump you full of).
On a personal note, please don't allow yourself to be grief stricken. Keep faith in God. We don't always get things on our schedule. Just know that He will bring a child into your life when He is ready! I know first-hand. At 41 years old, after my 4th miscairage He brought us peace, then He brought us the most wonderful daughter through the miracle of adoption. I would go through the pain of the 4 losses all over again if I could adopt another (We're gonna skip the pregnancy thing next time- adoption is our first choice)! You WILL be blessed- just let God take control!
Best of luck to you.

We struggled to get pregnant aswell, and at a year decided to see a specialist (rather than my regular OB/GYN) at a friend's recommendation. Were we glad! If you are close enough, I highly recommend any of the doctors at the Center for Assisted Reproduction in Bedford. Not only were they kind and professional, but their goal is to try to figure out what the problem is as quickly as possible. Many tests later, they figured out our problem and were able to conceive through a procedure. We heard our firstborn's heartbeat there. After our experience, I heard from different doctors how well respected they are in the community. Blessings on you! You are not alone!

Hi M.-

I had the same problem as you and was diagnosed with (PCOS) Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. I would strongly suggest you see your OBGYN and they may refer you to specialist(usually and reproductive endocrinologist). Your issue may be a simple as popping a pill to help you ovulate or more complicated and the specialists deal with this all day so I'm sure they can help. Don't get frustrated there are soooo many things that can be done. I combined modern medicine (injections for infertility) with Accupuncture and that's how I got pregnant with my 1st child and baby #2 happened by itself so you never know! I wish you the best of luck!!

M., my sister is 30, and has been trying to have a baby for a year. She is very irregular just as you are. She recently went to a fertility clinic and they discovered endometriosis at its very early stages, and were able to remove it. They also prescribed her a pill that helps with ovulation. She just went in last week to the dr for a check up after receiving a shot that would help to release an egg,and she was informed that 2 of her eggs were released and its possible she could be pregnant with twins! She will know for sure at the end of the month. I highly recommend going to a fertility specialist. I would recommend my sisters, but she lives in San Antonio. Good luck!! I can give you her email address if you'd like to talk to her about it.

You might see a fertility specialist. Mine had me on Clomid for 3 months, which was unsuccessful, but then he did an ink test to see if I had blockage, which I did. But, the ink must've cleared one of my tubes, because about 3 weeks later, we found out that we were pregnant. It took us 14 months, but now our little angel is 15 months old! I thought the day would never come! Stick with it, and try not to get too stressed until you've seen the doc.

You are not alone...it took us over two years to get pregnant the first time. It's hard to have a baby when your period disappears. You need to find a doctor you trust who is willing to work with you. My problem was figured out almost by accident. A doctor discovered that my blood sugar runs high (not diabetic, just high). Not sure how exactly it's related, but the high blood sugar causes me not to ovulate. When this was figured out, I was put on medication to lower my blood sugar and got pregnant two weeks later. My best friend has been trying to have a second baby for five years. She did all kinds of tests and even tried IVF three times. Nothing helped. Then last week they discovered a thyroid issue and her doctor is almost certain that's what is keeping her from getting pregnant. There could be a million things causing your issues. I know it's tough, heart breaking and so very frustrating. Hang in there.

Hi M.! I experienced the same thing myself. I had irregular periods my entire life. All the OB/GYNs that I saw would only hand over some birth control pills and send me on my way. When I wanted to get pregnant (at 29) and OFF the BC pills, the only answer that I got then was Clomid. I suspected that I might have PCOS but couldn't get any of the OB/GYNs to listen to me about it. A good friend finally recommended a midwife who actually listened to me and sent me in for a simple sonogram to confirm what I thought. I was right, it was PCOS. I had a lot of other markers too but when the sono tech took one look at my ovaries she knew exactly what was going on. My midwife tried to treat it with natual, compounded hormone therapy but it just wasn't working so she sent me to a great OB/GYN. He told me what all my options were and let me decide where to proceed from there. I chose to have the ovarian drilling procedure (sounds much worse than it actually is!!) and was pregnant before I made it back to him for a check up!! I have been completely regular since then. It's not a perfect solution nor a permanent one but it was my best long term, drug-free option. That said, ask your doc for that very simple, very quick sono. If they won't listen to you, find someone who will. If you want to talk about it more, feel free to e-mail me off list. I'll be happy to share more details and give you the names & numbers of the people that helped me.

Have you tried using an ovulation kit? I have also always been irregular. After months of trying on our own and trying to guess when I would be ovulating, we used the ovulation kit for 2 mos and I was pregnant. The first month we actually had to use 2 kits before it showed I was ovulating, but it did work. Hang in there. I know it is hard and frustrating when everyone around you seems to be pregnant. Good luck! :)
