Nosebleeds

My 8 year old daughter recently started having spontaneous nosebleeds two weeks ago, every day. (Actually, it started out every two days or so, now, everyday). I have set an appointment with the dr. but not until next Monday. I'm sort of freaking out in the meantime. She does not have a history of sinus infections and believe it or not, isn't a nose-picker. It's not a "gush" of blood, but it's a pretty steady flow of blood. Anyone else experienced this? Any ideas until I see doc? What can I do in the meantime when the nosebleeds happen?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone. This was the first question i ever posted on here and i loved the response! Turns out most people recommended neosporyn on qtips and nasal sprays. I haven't been to the doc with her yet, but this is working to control the bleeds. How easy. It's also helping her raw feeling in her nose. Turns out, her dad had these when he was little, ended up having cauterization, we'll see. Thanks again!

Buy a humidifier and place it in her room. Her sinus's are probably just really dry with the AC running all night. Hope this helps, B.

This can be caused by a vitamin deficiency. One good article is at http://healing.about.com/cs/common/a/nosebleed.htm .

You can google for it by entering nosebleeds vitamin deficiency and the main ones the come up are Vitamin K, Vitamin C, zinc, and Vitamin E.

Good luck!

Try taking a small amount of vaseline on a q-tip and rubbing it around in each nare. Not to far up just a little inside and that may help. And when they happen lean the child forward a little and squeeze the nose just under the bridge of the childs nose with the first finger and thumb that will help the nose to clot.

My daughter is 7 and has been having nosebleeds since she was 4. They are less frequent now. I did like you and took her to the doctor and they ran tests and more tests. None of which she was happy about. Then I met this wonderful nurse practitioner / mother of 4, that told me a little trick. Take a cutip and put a little neosporin on the end of it and run it on the inside rim of her nose about 2 or 3 times a day. Then I got a 2 gal sized cool mist humidifier at Wal Mart (about $20) and it runs all day and night. This keeps moisture in the house and the neosporin helps the air that she breaths stay moisturized also. My daughter's nosebleeds are very rare now. Hope this helps.

I used to get nosebleeds all the time. I definitely agree that keeping the air humid is great! I also recommend putting a little petroleum jelly in the nose DAILY...just enough to coat the inside of the nostrils. Saline spray works, too.

As for stopping them, have your daughter pinch just below the bridge of her nose (where the cartilage gets softer), sit down, and LEAN FORWARD. This keeps the clot from going down her thoat. Also, when the clot does form, have her GENTLY blow it out so that she can breathe. I know I have consistently had issue with bleeding around the clot. If they last more than 15-20 minutes, use ice wrapped in a damp washcloth and apply pressure to just below the bridge. DO NOT PACK HER NOSE!..this will cause the clot to form against the packing and when you remove it, it will bleed again (like ripping off a scab after it just formed.)

When you take her in to the doctor, make sure she's not anemic, and you might ask about having them cautorize the inside of her nose(this is where they burn the inside of the nose to seal the blood vessels closed). It's painful, but it usually works to stop the spontaneous bleeding.

Hi, we have this problem with my 6 year old. Sometimes it may be spurred by nosepicking or a heavy sneeze, but that isn't the cause. Some kids have exposed vessels in their nose, more so than others, and are more prone to nosebleeds. The biggest thing that's helped my daughter is to apply polysporin to the inside of her nose with a Q-tip in the mornings. It prevents drying of the interior of the nose (dryness is the main catalyst to nosebleeds, which happen much more often in the winter, dry months). Everybody I asked, including the pediatrician, told me to do this and it does work. Try it out and see if you can tell a difference or at least a decrease. I would see an ENT if it continues with this treatment. Good luck!

Vaseline or Neosporin on a qtip rubbed in the nose will prevent the majority of nosebleeds. It is from the blood vessels in the inside of the nose getting too dry typically. Spring is the height of allergy season and hence the height of nose bleed season. My 7 y.o. gets them all the time and the only way i've found to prevent is the vaseline/neosporin.

My 19yodd had these a great deal as a child and yes they can be scary. Hers would last a long time & we even ended up in the emergency room once when I couldn't get it to stop. And I found out a thing or two had changed since I was a child.

When I was a child we would lean our heads BACK and fold up a small piece of paper & put under our upper lip (applied pressure so they say). But with Sarah they advised something different. Have her keep her head slightly forward, not back. This will keep the blood from draining down her throat & making her sick, not to mention the nasty taste. Pinch her nose near the bridge of her nose for approximately 20 minutes. The doctor told us that her blood vessels sit close to her skin and the slightest dryness will cause her nose to bleed so the key is to keep her nose moist & the air moist. Winter was always bad for her so we kept humidifiers going & a tea kettle on the wood burning stove going.

Saline sprays are good for keeping the lining of the nose moist and helped prevent the nose bleeds as well. Usually once the nose bleed stopped, she would pull out (don't gross out) big clots and then it was done. They are a pain and a hassle but she eventually outgrew them. She did have to have her nose carterized twice when she was about your daughters age and they slowed some, but didn't stop till she got older.

I would try those 2 things while waiting to go to the doctor...saline spray and humidifiers.

Best of luck to you.

My husband has this problem, alot. So far nothing the dr's can do. We have gone to ER several times while the bleed is happening but by the time we sit there forever the bleed stops. They say that they have to see it while it is happening. Who knows. What he does when it starts is get an ice pack out of the freezer. We keep them in there for lunchboxes, etc. Put that on the back of the neck. Since she is so young, you might want to put something between teh skin and the pack. Since it is so cold, it causes the body to shunt the blood away from that spot. It stops bleeding almost instantly. HTH. Good luck with the dr.

You have to wait for the doctor's assessment as to why she has nosebleeds. He may want to do some tests in order to make a diagnosis.

In the meantime, I think you can give your daughter some reassurance by being calm about the nosebleeds and just taking care of them as you would any cut or scrape. Others have suggested several different methods of helping prevent them ... I would go for the vaseline for my children ... it's easy and always around.

Good luck with the doctor's visit.

I had the same problem when I was a child. I found out my veins were very close to the surface of the inside of my nose. Their is a very simple procedure they can do where they take a que-tip with a medicine on it and swab the inside of the nose. If this doesn't work they can pack the nose and sinus cavity with some type of material. The first one worked for me. Im 31 and haven't had a nose bleed since. Whatever you do don't let her tip her head back when stopping the nose bleed. All this does is cause the blood to go down her throat and cause her to vomit the blood up. It happened to me many times and was very scary. Have her keep her head in a normal position or slightly downward and apply pressure by pinching the bridge of the nose. This should help it to stop. Hope I helped.

I have b/g twins that are 5, and both were having a lot of nose bleeds. My son was the worst.(esp at night, and I was really concerned) I made them a dr. appt. and the dr. said that this is common. My girl has not had a nose bleed in a long time, due to having a humidifier (cold mist) in her room. My son still does occassionally but he does have a tendenancy to pick at his nose. The dr. said they just have thin skin inside their nose and the capularies are very sensitive. (esp when it is colder and the heat is on, it will dry the lining of their nose to cause more bleeds) He said they will out grow it and that it can be heritary. he suggested that I do NOT have them cautorized (sp?) I do think you should still take her to the dr. but this was what I was told. Hope it might help.

I use to do day care and in the afternoons we had a little girl whom started having nose bleeds a lot finally they took her to the doctor and it was very fatel. Take your child to the ER next time and tell them what is happing, if you can't get into the doctor when the next one comes. Don't let this go on. Also when I was young I just started developing early and that was the only way my body could eject the monthly flow. So please take her to the ER. This is nothing to wait on a doctor for. It could be simple but it's your child why wait to see.

Hey C.! I to have an 8yr. old daughter who gets frequent nose bleeds, and has since she was little. It is a good idea to get her checked, but most likely her nasil passage is dry. It happens most often to my child during weather changes- hot to cold or vice versa- like now. The air itself is too dry. Heat on hot outside, inside temp does not change as quickly. I use a humidifier at night or leave the fan on over her bed (ceiling fan). We also keep the heat down lower because of this. Saline nasil spray is also good, but you don't want to use too much or too often, because you can train the nose to become dependent on it. Just explain all this to your daughter, so she will not be scared. Send her with klenex to school and have here drink lost of water, especially is climate change. My daughter now just says my nose is bleeding and is able to hold it herself and stop the bleeding. Be careful of claritan, the over the counter seasonal allergy med. It gives horrendous nose bleeds. Hope this helps feel free to email me if I can answer any more questions. This is a regular for us.

I had the same problem with my daughter. Does she have allergies? My daughter does and we have to be careful with her medication. Antihistamines dry out her nasal passages - hence the nosebleeds. It happens during cold season, too. A humidifier at night would help if you don't already have one attached to your heating system. If it gets really bad you can use saline nose drops, but she never really liked those. Good luck. Oxyclean does a pretty good job of getting blood out of msot fabrics.

My son had this. He had a small vein that was easily irritated by dryness in the air. His doctor used some kind of stick thingy, stuck it on the vein and cauterized it right there in the office. It made him jump, but didn't really hurt him and it was fixed. Now, 10 years later, he occasionally will have a nose bleed, but not every day like before.

I also had nosebleeds as a child, actually pretty heavy and frequently. They had told my mom at the time that I was allergic to aspirin and chocolate (of course this was in the 70's before we knew not to give kids aspirin)The doctor would periodically check my Hgb to make sure I wasn't anemic. I would have her evaluated by her doctor, but in the meantime to handle the nosebleed, DO NOT HAVE HER TILT HER HEAD BACK!! All this does is makes the blood run down the back of the throat and cause nausea, hold pressure to the area, and apply an ice pack to the back of the neck. I hope this helps.

Don't worry too much over this. It happens alot. Sometimes a small vessel will get busted or irrated and it will cause a small repeated nose bleed. The doctor will probably cauterize the area that is bleeding and she should be fine. Just make sure the inside of her nose remains moist. You can apply vasoline to keep it moist. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

This will sound redundant but most of what those that have experienced this with their children are doing what my did to me. I was the one with this problem as a child. I remember having to come in from playing and first sit and do the pinch on the nose to clot. Once the bleeding stopped, I had to do the cool down (with the washcloths on my head and neck while I reclined somewhere). Then I had to get the vaseline nostril swab. It was a routine. And I have children with sinus issues so when and if they get nosebleeds, I do follow this regimen. I do remember my mom taking me to the dr. but I do not remember us changing our routine following that visit. And along the lines of Oxyclean advice, remember COLD water rinsed immediately to the stain helps lighten most blood stains and then go for the Shout or Oxyclean in the wash cycle. So, it is a unfortunate common problem. You keep your cool and they will too. ;-)

My 7 year old has the same problem. Sometimes it's caused by the heat, other times it can be dry nasal membranes. For heat, my mom taught me to pat the top of the head with cool water and apply a cool, wet washcloth over her forehead while keeping a tissue at her nose. You can put that washcloth behind her neck, too. To keep the membranes from drying up you can lightly coat a Q-tip with vaseline and gently swab inside her nostril--not during the bleeding! I do it on hot days as a preventative measure. It helps to go over what she should do when it happens again: 1-plug nostrils with fingers, 2-calmly walk to bathroom, 3-put tissue or t/p to the nose and call mom, 4-stand at the sink. It's easier to wipe a sink than spot clean the carpet! Good luck!

We went to the doctor and he suggested to coat the nostrils with vasoline - just put some on a Q-tip and swab - it is easier to do when they are asleep! They do sometime cauterize the tissue to make the bleeding stop however I am glad the drs office was out of those when we went in. Good Luck.

My son had the same problem last year. It especially hit him hard during allergy season. We inevitably had to have his nose cauterize which was not painful. They just used a cotton swab and rubbed the inside of his nose with an acid. Until you see the doctor I would recommend using a saline spray twice daily. It will keep the nasal passage moist so that the blood vessels will not break. You also may try just alittle bit of Vaseline on a Q-Tip at night to keep the area moist.

Dear C.,
I think you need to call your doctor back and talk to the nurse at the office and explain what is happening to try and get a quicker appointment as this is not normal. They need to check your daughter's clotting time!
Meanwhile have her take children's vitamins and when she gets a nosebleed have her recline with her head tilted back slightly and use an ice pace on her nose where she is bleeding from. She may swallow blood, which will make her feel sick or have a dry throat. Frozen popcycles or sprite will help. With a severe nosebleed she may even throw up blood or pass blood clots through her nose. Just don't freak out. If she loses a lot of blood and feels weak or dizzy take her to the ER!
Meanwhile hang in there! I experienced severe nosebleeds as a child due to being a hemophilia carrier and have a son with severe hemophilia and a daughter that is mild. Its amazing the amount of blood a person can loose and survive.
You are welcome to contact me with any other questions.

There are soooooo many reason for epistaxis that your daughter could have these bleeds for something as simple as your home heating, the air is too dry and drying out the inside of her nose. My son started with chronic nosebleds at the age of 1. Finally after shooting saline up his nose, continually running cool mist vaporizers, swabbing the inside of his nose with neosporin, even blood tests to rule out bleeding disorders, we finally had to have his nose cauterized along with an adnoidectomy and tonsilectomy. The nosebleeds were happening during school as well as in the middle of the night....Nothing like an unrested miserable 6 year old. Before surgery we even added a vitamin C suppliment. We tried everything from doctor's advice to home remedies, nothing worked until the surgery.
You could try some of the above, but until you see a doc, and find out what is causing the problem best thing to do is be prepared for them and STAY CALM when they happen. Don't tilt her head back, it causes the blood to run to the back of the throat can cause gag reflex and make her sick. We always had rolled up gauze to put inside his upper lip to apply pressure or he'd sit forward and we would apply pressure to the bridge of his nose and he'd have to sit still (no running around, screaming and playing) until 30 minutes after the bleed stopped. My boy's were such a regular thing that it became routine for him (sad isn't it). He actually at the age of four knew how to take care of a nosebleed himself.
I will say after my son's procedure he very rarely has them now and if he does they are very slight. Good luck to you, I really can relate to how scary and frustrating this can be.

I would make sure they checked her blood pressure, etc at the doc's office though, because those are more frequent than I have seen on kids.

Thew nosebleeds could be caused by the "change" in the weather or from the environment being too dry. You might try a humidifier with plain water to add a little moisture back into the air. Older adults having nosebleeds are generally caused from allergies or high blood pressure. When a nose bleed occurs, keep her calm. Apply a cold wet washcloth, pinch below the bony surface on her nose and tilt her head down. If you tilt her head back, it could make her have nausea and she might throw up. Good luck with the appointment.

I'm an EMT....which comes in handy when you have kids. Afrin works to stop nose bleeds....check and see what the dosage is. The sitting forward is the "new" directions for the drainage. Swallowing the blood will make her puke. The weather has been funky this year, and having the heat on and off dries out of sinuses. Some nasal saline might help keep them moist. You can find it at most stores.

Maybe what is happening is that it is just dry air (from your heat) and if you put a humidifier in her room it will stop. That has happened to me in the past and a little moisture goes a long way. Also they make a saline spray that you can get at the drug store. That has been recommended for my 2 year old before. It is basically just putting moisture up in her nose. It doesn't always feel good so my 2 year old doesn't like it but maybe your 8 year old would be better with it. Just a few suggestions.

Hi C.,

I am guessing that the recent onset of nosebleeds has to do with spring arriving. It's very possible that you daughter's nose is very irritated by the recent arrival of pollen. Sounds like to me your daughter is allergic to the trees that are blooming right now. Maybe talk to the doctor about a daily allergy medicine. The reason I say this is that my whole family is allergic to the trees that bloom in the Spring. My mom has nosebleeds and migraines at this time of the year. My 11 month old son has started wheezing and had congestion issues more in the past 2 weeks (I have also noticed some slight nose bleeding), so it sounds like he is one more with hayfever symptoms in our family!

I have been dealing with this for several years. My sons can get very bad at times. He has seasonal allergies I believe so this time of year is particularly bad. I was told by the ENT to pinch the nose tightly for 10 minutes. That typically works. Sometimes we pack his nose with gauze so he can go on and play. Blowing the nose and getting whatever is in there out will sometimes make it move along faster. My son picks his nose sometimes (as kids do) and that obviously will get it started. Salt water nose sprays will help keep the tissues moistened. Vaporizers in their room at night will help.

I had them as a kid, my mother had them as a kid and they pass eventually.

Good luck. I know it is stressful because it is blood but it really isn't too big of a deal in the big scheme.

I actually started to have that problem recently. My doctor said it was due to the changing weather and to keep a humidifier going in my room and to use the saline nose sprays to keep my nose moist. There are also some saline gels that people on oxygen use that work a little better. I don't know if your daughter's nose bleeds are caused by the same problem, but these are fairly simple fixes and they worked for me in about 3 days.

C.,
I had this problem as a child. I did have to have something carterized.(don't know exactly what it was as it was so long ago. It was done in the Dr.'s office. Never had the problem again. It wasn't fun, but it was over fairly quickly.
in the mean time have her keep some cotton balls with her.the quickest way to stop a nose bleed is to place a small wad of cotton under the upper lip. I don't know why this works, but it does.

My son is grown now but had nosebleeds terribly when he was your daughter's age and still has them occasionally but not near as bad. The doctor cauterized his nose several times which helped but never stopped them. His blood vessels were very near the surface and when the air was very dry and his nose was dry he just had the nosebleeds. Just teach her what to do. Put pressure on the bridge of her nose and tilt her head back slightly--not a lot, as she does not want the blood to go back down. Put a cold wet kleenex or soft paper towel gently in her nose to help it clot. There are some nose sprays available now that just moisten the nose and they will help also. Hope this helps.

C.- Nosebleeds are inconvenient for yourself and probably embarrassing for your daughter. My dd 10 has had spontaneous nosebleeds for several years. The methods we've discovered to keep them under control are:
*place a humidifier in her room. Because of the lack of rain and windy conditions the air is very dry. Providing extra moisture in her room will help keep her nose from drying and cracking and consequently from bleeding.
*have her use a saline nose spray 3-4 times daily, this will help to keep her nasal passages moist. It is important to purchase saline only nasal spray. Others sprays have addictive agents.
*If she uses an anti-allergen spray such as Nasonex; have her discontinue use for several days. This will allow her nasal passages to heal without a daily irritant.
My last suggestion, which is the one my daughter dislikes most, is to place pure lanolin in the base of the nose. The lanolin has a very "earthy" smell that my daughter doesn't enjoy, so you may want to use this as a last resort. Again, the idea being to help the nasal passages to say as moist as possible to avoid nose bleeds.
Hope this helps.

Hi C.,

I had nosebleeds alot as a child. I had to get my nose cauterized to stop it..it really helped. You mentioned you have a doctor appointment...Is it with an ENT? That is where you need to go.

Good Luck!

My husband used to have nosebleeds as a child and my 6 yr old son has them also, though not as sever. Try a humidifier or vaporizer in her room to keep the air moist.

Good luck.

my daughter has lots of nose bleeds. she to is not normally a nose picker, but her nose gets so dry inside that it irritates her. she will then pick at it to stop it from irritating her and cause a nosebleed. you should try the simply saline nose spray. it sprays a fine mist of clean saline in the nose and moisturizes the tissues. also before bed you can use a q-tip to put a large glop of vasiline in each nostril. it is a little gross but really keeps the nose moist and helps the nosebleeds.
