Nose Ring Question

Hi everyone -

I know this isn't a typical Mamasource question, but I thought I could still get some input on here. I have wanted to get a nose ring for a long time now...specifically a VERY small stud. I haven't ever gotten my nose pierced because I've always worked, and a nose ring has never been appropriate for the office. Now that I'm a SAHM, I am considering it again.

My only concern is how the hole looks without the piercing or should I ever tire of it down the road. Am I marring my nose forever, or will the hole be small and hard to notice?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the tips! I did end up getting it pierced this past week, taking into account what everyone said. I really like it! The stud is a little big for my liking, but I will switch it to a smaller one once it heals. (Any advice on where to get a good quality, super-small stud is welcome!) And I feel ok that, if I ever decide to take it out, it won't be very noticeable. Thanks!

Hi A.. I am a high school teacher and I have had my nose pierced on and off for several years now. I wear my stud inside out bc the ball of the ring is smaller than the top stud. Also, for some reason, the outer layer of my nose reacts differently to the stud being put through from the outside. I hope this makes sense. I have had it done twice now, from Beyond the Limit on Harlem and Irving. It's actually on Irving just west of Harlem. They charge 30 for the piercing with the stud, or if you already have one, just 15 for the 'labor' =) I say go for it. I interviewed with it in and as a matter of fact one of my students JUST noticed it as I was typing this after being around me for almost 3 months now. Plus, the tissue in our noses heals quite nicely. GO FOR IT...Good luck

I rarely wear my nose stud anymore and no one has ever (verbally) noticed the hole. I put it in every couple months just so it doesn't close up. If you have very smooth skin with small pores it may be more noticible (like a larger pore).

I just want to say go for it! I am a SAHM in my early thirties and also live in Lincoln Square. My nose has been pierced since I was 15 years old and I love it. There are wonderful places to purchase tiny little diamonds and other stones that just sparkle ever so slightly and look amazing. I'm a therapist and have gotten very little negative feedback about my nose stud in my career. It will close up nicely if you decide you no longer like it. However if you went so long without it and still return to that particular desire, it must be destiny for you! Do get it done at a piercing parlor, that is the best advice it will heal quicker, easier and nicer. The piercing gun can cause a keeloid (i think the spelling is wrong, that is how it sounds). A keloid is a node of skin that forms due to irritation. This will be a huge problem and could cause the piercing to heal badly should you want to take it out. The needle that a piercer will use will avoid that. Let us know what you decide to do!

I think a tiny little stud can look quite attractive on the right person. Here is just something to keep in mind. I know you just became a SAHM mom so it seems like you will have this role forever, or you are thinking in the moment where you and your baby is your whole world. But take some time to think about this (only because I have been your mind frame) the time will disappear before your very own eyes and you will wonder where it went. It goes so fast and your baby is no longer a baby, in a very brief time. Even if you plan on having babies for the next 10 years, you still may want to go back to work at some point in time and you may be in circles where you will lose out on job opportunities because of this decision. I know it should not be that way, but people judge on appearance. Unfortunate but reality. Do you want to be perceived as fun and free spirited or more serious and hard-working? I know its not absolute like that per se but you get the idea. If you really want it, that being said, you could just take the plunge and live with whatever consequences there may be. Ifyou will feel good about yourself with the piercing then you should do it. With all that being said, wee only have one life to live to do what your heart tells you!

If you have dark skin, sometimes the skin color around the hole will darken. This does not go away, even if the hole is very tiny. Then when you're not wearing the nose ring you have this dark ring that is noticeable.

I think it'll be hard for anyone to guess what will happen with you specifically but I can tell you about my experience.

I got my nose pierced on 8/10/08 with a small diamond stud, the kind that is curved so it is not easy to get back in if you take it out. I only waited a couple of weeks before taking it out to switch the jewelry and for awhile I thought it was fine until I developed a bump on my nose which is not an uncommon occurrence. I took the jewelry out and then could not get it back in because of the bump. I used tea tree oil to get rid of the bump and there was just a small dot but nothing that was horrible. I was able to get my nose re-pierced with the original jewelry in the exact same spot as the first time and this time I'm not taking it out for a long time! Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

All of my aunts had their noses pierced, and if I didn't KNOW they had it pierced I wouldn't be able to tell, and it's been at least 20 years for all of them. My teenage neighbors also have it done (it's common in their culture) and if they aren't wearing it I can't tell as well. I think it'll be fine, much less noticable than the scars left over from other piercings!

I had mine pierced three summers ago. I took it out a year later when I had surgery and there is no visible scar or hole. Initially it looked like a tiny light brown freckle, but I just looked at it again before responding to this (since I never even think about it anymore!) and I see nothing. I actually plan on getting it repierced now that I have a "cuter" nose. Good luck!

Hi A., In my 20's I had my nose pierced. One time it was infected and had to be pulled out from the inside of my nose. (Yeah, picture that!) After the infection healed I had it redone at the same place and it was great. I wanted a small stud so the one I had was barely noticeable and only seen when people would see the gleam off the stud or I would point it out. I loved it. Then I went into the banking business and choose to have it removed. I HIGHLY recommend you have it done at a tattoo parlor and not at a ear piercing place like some people do. 1) Tattoo parlors are usually better trained and cleaner and use a very long needle that is peirced by hand 2) Ear places use the gun which makes the hole bigger and they use a regular earring which ends up looking tacky once completed.
Tattoo parlor use special studs with long stems and no backs. Once in, the stems are twisted inside ur nose so it wont come out or be seen. I do agree with one person said about ur son. Be careful because they will try to yank it out. I had this done. I won't say it hurt, but it's not a good feeling. Now all I have is a small mark like a dot made with a pen. I know this was from the infection I had and not the piercing. Had I not had the infection, I doubt I would have any mark today. Also, the infection was my fault and not the result or my piercer. I have super sensative skin and should have taken better care of it. I recommed going to Tatu Tattoo here in the city. (Link below) They were great, clean and professional. Good luck and I say "Go for it!!" I would get it done again now that I work from home but I have a daycare in my home and am not sure what other parents would think. Plus I'm 31 now and thinking I'm passed that faze. :)

Hi A.,

I had a small stud in my nose while in college and very shortly after I took it out it closed up nicely without a trace. And I think unless you are going for a managerial position later and maintain a network now with people who might object, the nose ring wont mater. JMO

Just have it done in a professional place and be careful with your son, as it can be very painful if its pulled out accidentally in the beginning before being completely healed.
