Normal 2 Year Old Behavior?? - Livingston,NJ

Hey moms!!

I'm always one to worry, especially about my child. Ever since he's been born I've become more of a worrier in general, so please don't mind my "stupid" questions.

Is it normal for DS to spin around in circles from time to time? It's not a constant thing, just something he finds funny I guess.
Is it normal for him to repeat something for example "car! Car! Car!" Until I say "yes, baby, that a car"
Is it normal for him to be "on the go" a lot of the time? He will sit still here and there for a few minutes at a time.

I'm asking these things because they were on a red flag list on teachmetotalk.com and it worried me. It seemed to me these things were normal. My DS is just 2 and has over 100 words now. He knows body parts and some shapes and colors.

What can I do next?

Yes, it's normal for a two year old to spin, be on the go, and repeat everything over and over.

Quit worrying.

Please, please avoid these online checklists that claim to "help" parents analyze "Is my baby normal?" and a thousand other things. They only scare parents unnecessarily. If a list isn't from a VERY reputable NON-business site -- like the National Institutes of Health or the American Academy of Pediatrics, for instance -- please ignore it totally. You will just get upset over nothing. Your son sounds fine. Repetition of words is how they learn; he wants you to confirm that the car he sees is the word Car he knows.

The fact that you have counted how many words he has, and that you visited a site called "teachmetotalk," indicates to me that you have or had some concern about his development--? Is that right? If he has that many words at two and is curious, alert, and responsive to other people, and adds new words all the time, he sounds fine. If his speech itself is hard to understand, some of that may be typical for a toddler, but take him for a formal speech evaluation rather than looking at a speech therapist's online site. You'll save yourself so much grief and worry!

By the way -- NO question is stupid! Kids don't come with instruction manuals. You are just doing your best for your child and you did a very important thing by just asking. Never apologize for asking anything!

if two year olds sat still or didnt get into everything they wouldnt be called the terrible twos. I dont think i sat down for very long when mine were that little. They also like to hear themselves talk since they can. They get excited when they see a car and can tell you about it, or a bug, or a airplane, or a bird, or a booger. Your son sounds normal to me.

Yup. Don't know the website. His vocab will come along. Some kids are later than others.

If you need speech therapy, find a kind one. I'm sure they are all kind, but one that doesn't force him to make noise - or make him think. Protect his babyhood and childhood. : )

And yes, if you do NOT pay attention to your car (ie: respond immediately - and even if you do) you will hear your car repeated over and over again at louder volumes with increasingly annoyed tone added on at later moments.

Respond to your baby the first time, be ho hum about most things except things of the heart (Mama, there's my blankie - is far more close to his heart than 'Mama I made it look like you told me to!'.

Your DS is doing fine. Mine is right behind him, haven't counted words, he's 2.5 now.

Spinning is NORMAL for boys, too. They need it.

good luck,
M.

Yep, it's all normal. They love how it feels to spin. And my daughter is 5, and since she could talk, would repeat herself until she got some kind of response or acknowledgement from me - even if it's just "Uh huh, yep." She's such a busy body and rarely perfectly still. She's also a total chatterbox. She's in kindergarten this year and doing great. And she did all those same things at 2 also.

Yes, all of that sounds normal. If he was obsessive about spinning and got really upset when you tried to make him stop and do something else that might be an issue. If that is not the case, then he is just experimenting with his balance and having fun which is a GOOD thing!

Repeating a word until you respond is his way of trying to communicate with you and make sure that you understand what he is telling you. Respond with interest and animation and say something like “Yes, that is a car, good job! That’s a blue car isn’t it? Is it driving fast or slowly?”

Being active is very important for your child so being “on the go’ much of the time is great! Believe it or not some toddlers are learning to sit still TOO MUCH while watching TV or playing with iPads or whatever and it is a growing problem that is contributing to childhood obesity. Encourage activity in your son! Take him to the park as much as you can. In the moments when he is tired out and ready to sit down, read to him or color with crayons with him.

Enjoy your precious toddler, he will be in school before you know it and you will miss these days with him!

OMG he is totally normal! I see no reason to even think otherwise. My son can't it still for more than 5 min and never stops talking! And I always ask before I open anything for him in case he wants to try himslef first. And I will warn you...terrible two's turn into terrible three's!

Sounds good--I have 3 boys, the oldest of which has ADHD. He has concerned me since he was about 3, but I see nothing concerning in your description of your son.

My little one will be three in June, he spins and repeats himself and goes through times when he isn't still even for a second. Doc' says it's all typical of his age.

Yep, sounds like he's alive. My DS was a little different, because he started to talk early, but most of the kids in his daycare center at that age sound just like your child. If you're worried, just be sure to use as much time with your DS as you can talking to him and singing simple songs to him. He'll eventually pick up the songs and start singing them. I can still remember when my DS was little. He used to sit in the back seat trying to sing, "Earl, Earl" when they'd play "Goodbye Earl" on the radio. Spining around to make himself dizzy is fun for kids that age and older. He's probably repeating things to get your attention. Most toddlers do not sit still, so you can relax and enjoy you wonderful boy.
