Noisy Neighbors

We just moved into a new house a few weeks ago. Our next door neighbors (a guy) blare music from their car. But they do it at different times of the day and night. It's an everyday thing and is really getting annoying. Any advice on what can be done about it?

You could make an anonymous noise complaint from a pay phone if you didn't want them to know it was you..

We had the same issue with college kids across the street and my husband went over one day when he saw them in the yard and just calmly addressed it and said something like hey guys we are finding this annoying and would appreciate you not doing this and it has gotten so much better. I would not address it at night or when you are agitated. But I would address it and then call the police and complain, not 911 but regular number because there are laws.

most cities have ordinances against music that can be heard 30ft or more from a vehicle or house. If this is the case, I'd call the police. Especially if it's after 11pm (usually the time that "quiet hours" begin according to most city laws)

When it's happening call the police - or whatever law enforcement agency your neighborhood is associated with. If possible, get as close to the noise as you can when calling - without your neighbors seeing - while calling dispatch.

It may take a few times, but the neighbors will stop. Police do not like to be called to the same house for the same reason. They usually get their message across fairly quickly.

Hi K.,
It depends- are your neighbors "home owners" or "renters"? If they are home owners about all you can do is ask them to not be so loud- if they are renters and you have ask them not to be so loud you can file a complaint with the owner of the property. There are noise laws in Texas and I believe the limit is 10:00pm on week days and 12:00 on week ends

you can file a complaint with the police dept but other than that there is not much you can do.
If the person making all the noise is a teen ager- go to his parents
Sorry but this seems to be the age we are living in where some to do not consider the comfort of others.
Good Luck and blessing

If the sound bothers you call the SAPD non-emergency number, ###-###-####. file a complaint and keep track of when you called the outcome and let the SAPD operator that you would like to be contacted by phone to get a case number. If your neighbor is a renting you are within your rights to contact his landlord. if he is the home owner keep calling the police they will start to ticket him, but let them know that you have called before once you start to keep a log. Its a pain in the butt, but if you try to talk to him and it does not work you may have to go this route, and Yes I had a noisy neighbor too, he even used his chain saw at 3 am, while he was DRUNK!!!!!!! so i simpatize with you, i hope it works out.

My husband and I put up with noisy neighbors for two years. We would call or go over and ask them to keep it down or turn it down (nicely) and eventually we started calling the police and after 2 years, we took them to small claims court and won. It's very frustrating and if you already have sleep issues, it can be debilitating. I thought that the curfew for weekends was 11pm, but I could be wrong. Good luck!!

we called the cops. they went and asked the neighbors to turn it down, they were having a party and it was after midnight. Then we called again around thee am. At first they told us that they already made that call. We told them it did not work and we needed the cops again. Hope this helps.

We use to have loud neighbors. I would put on some soft music just loud enough to cover the obnoxious sounds from outside. Then our peacful home would be peacful again. If that does not work usually a call to the police will do the trick. I am a stay at home mom also and a few of us started a storytime hour that allows kids to play and hear stories and it gives the moms a chance to talk and support each other. If you have any questions you can contact me.

We have the exact same problem. All I could think to do was call the police. They came out, told them to turn the music down and they did. Haven't had a problem since.

We also have had this problem. You didn't mention the age of the "deaf" (or soon to be) person with the booming radio. Our problem was with a teenager so I spoke with the mother but we've been in our house 17 years and are established in the neighborhood. I told her that if it were to continue the police would be called. It quit for awhile and the problem started again. (My windows would rattle and we couldn't even hear the TV in our own living room.)I waited until just before curfew one evening and called the police. The dispatcher asked me to turn down "our radio". When I told her that it was the music I was calling to complain about because I was standing in my living room with all doors and windows closed, it took no time at all for a unit to respond. They didn't even wait until curfew.
After that it would start up every once in a while but all I had to do was walk outside with the phone up to my ear LIKE I was talking to the police again and it would be instant silence. Now, they may be rocking the windows of every house they pass as they pull in but the radio is turned off immediately. I guess the ticket they got the first time was enough of a deterrent.
I wish you luck!!

You might ask your husband to speak to the neighbor calmly and quietly, reminding him that you have a young child who can easily be awakened by the loud music at night (or even during the day at naptime for that matter). Your husband should nicely ask him if he would mind "toning it down" a bit and see how he reacts.

If he's ugly about it, don't hesitate to call the authorities--the police or the sheriff depending on where you live. There are ordinances against disturbing the peace, and no one should have to live with a constant onslaught of noise.

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this in your new home. Nothing can be as aggravating as inconsiderate neighbors.

My parents have the same problem. They live in Houston, in a kind of a bad neighborhood, and their neighbors are Latino. They blare Latin music at all hours of the night and day, more so in the night than in the day. The police don't come into that part of town much, so there's really nothing they can do about it. I hope you find a good resolution to your problem, though, and your nights are peaceful soon!

If you live in a neighborhood where you pay dues, you can make an anonymous complaint to the homeowners association.

I'm with Sue on this. Start by calmly having your husband go over and talk to him. Not confrontational or calling police first thing---that sets things off to a bad start and things can get worse in a hurry.
Just calmly asking for him to keep the music down say after 8 pm or keep it down on the weekends, or something reasonable, for starters.

Hi Kim,

Do you have a home owner's association? If so, you could report the neighbors to them and maybe they can do something about the noise. If it is after 9 or 10 at night, you can call the police. Hope this helps. J.

I would talk to them about it first, for sure. You don't want to get off on the wrong foot with new neighbors. If they are ugly to you or don't respond, then I would call the police as a last resort. At least give them a chance. The last neighbors may not have cared or maybe nobody else has mentioned it and they don't think it's bothering anyone (although I don't know how people can be that loud and think it doesn't). Give them the benefit of the doubt and give it a shot. Here's hoping you get some peace and quiet soon.
