No Teeth... - Inman,SC

My daughter will be 9 months old on the first and still has no teeth. She went through "teething", (this was according to her Dr) at around 3.5 months and he assured us that she would get her teeth soon after that. Well she stopped teething around 5 months and since then there are no further signs that teeth are coming any time soon!! We go for her 9 month check-up towards the end of next month (gotta love those Dr. vacations...) and I don't know if this issue is worth pressing about. She is starting to chomp on teethers, which she never did before and is now chewing on her sippy cup nipples as well. She has had a few days in the last week where she is just whiny and miserable and I'm wondering if she is teething again? Is it normal for babies to have NO teeth this late? I'm starting to get worried!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

She finally has a TOOTH!!!!! We noticed it a little over a week ago and it is almost all the way in. She is now getting another one on the other side on the bottom... Looks like she is going to catch up quick!! Thanks again for all the great advice!!

don't worry about it too much. My neice didn't cut her first tooth until she was 12 months...yep! 12 months! Every child is different...don't worry too much.

My childrens' baby teeth didn't come in until they were 9 months old. From what I have heard the usual time for a baby's teeth to come through is from 5 months to 12 months. From what you say that she is gumming on, it sounds like a tooth is getting ready to come through. I don't think that there is anything to worry about. Let us know when her tooth comes through.

From what I have heard, some babies just get their teeth later than others. My sister's 16 month old did not start getting his teeth until after his first birthday. Her now 3 year old son started getting his around 11 months. Both her boys are very healthy!

According to my baby book, I got my two lower teeth at 8 months (but was eating solid foods at one month). My kids, on the other hand, got their first teeth at five months and four months, respectively. I have a friend whose son is 18 months old and has the two lower teeth. That's it. There isn't anything you can "DO" about it. They come when they come. Just be sure you're using a washcloth daily to wipe her gums to get her ready for future teeth brushing.

Hey Mom!
Please don't lose any sleep over her teething. It's very commom for kids to go into teething mode several times before they actually get their first tooth.
As long as she is not running a temp, is eating and sleeping well she will be just fine!
Please don't make a mountain out of a mole hill over this I hardly think you need to worry about baby dentures over this....yet.
Please take plenty of pictures, because she won't be like this long. When she dose start getting her teeth in THEN you worry. Things like coffee tables corners and wallpaper will be a thing of the past. So enjoy this little respite while you can
take care Mom, enjoy the quiet, it won't be to much longer before she'll be munching you out of your house and home.
Love, Nana

Go ahead and ask if it makes you more comfortable to speak to the doctor about it... that's why they are there. But I think no teeth by 9 months is no big deal. A friend of mine's daughter didn't get her first tooth until 18 months and now (she's 2-1/2) most of them are finally there. :) That's a bit of an extreme case, though!

Yes, it is completely normal. I am a dental hygienist and I have seen kids without any teeth up to 15 months old. On average kids begin teething at about 6 months. This is just a general guideline. Just like babies start sitting up at 6 months, crawling at 9 and walking at 12. These are just guidelines to let parents know what they might expect, but each child is different and will develop at his own pace. Do not worry about the teeth. They will come in. My cousins were both 13 months before getting their 1st tooth. Children can also have teething symptoms for several months prior to getting a tooth. Don't worry about this, it will be fine and your little will have those chompers before you know it!

completely normal! I know some kids who didn't even have teeth at they're first bday! My son personally didnt even start getting his teeth until he was 10 months, and then it was slow, 2 teeth every month or so. My daughter got 2 teeth at 7-8months old and then no more since. lots of teething though.

No worries...my daughters first tooth barely appeared at her 9 month appt and by 10 months all 4 of her front teeth were in. I have heard that they come in as stronger teeth when they come later. Now I don't know if that is fact or just theory/old wives tale, but either way my daughter has a beautiful full set of teeth now (and did so by about 14 months)!

My nephew got his first tooth at 13 months and I know a few other babies who did not get teether before 11 months - just keep the tylenol at the ready - it sounds like she is getting close!

Don't worry. My daughter did not get her first tooth until she was 9 months old. My son is a year old now and only has 4 teeth.
