No Teeth... - Inman,SC

My daughter will be 9 months old on the first and still has no teeth. She went through "teething", (this was according to her Dr) at around 3.5 months and he assured us that she would get her teeth soon after that. Well she stopped teething around 5 months and since then there are no further signs that teeth are coming any time soon!! We go for her 9 month check-up towards the end of next month (gotta love those Dr. vacations...) and I don't know if this issue is worth pressing about. She is starting to chomp on teethers, which she never did before and is now chewing on her sippy cup nipples as well. She has had a few days in the last week where she is just whiny and miserable and I'm wondering if she is teething again? Is it normal for babies to have NO teeth this late? I'm starting to get worried!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She finally has a TOOTH!!!!! We noticed it a little over a week ago and it is almost all the way in. She is now getting another one on the other side on the bottom... Looks like she is going to catch up quick!! Thanks again for all the great advice!!

My childrens' baby teeth didn't come in until they were 9 months old. From what I have heard the usual time for a baby's teeth to come through is from 5 months to 12 months. From what you say that she is gumming on, it sounds like a tooth is getting ready to come through. I don't think that there is anything to worry about. Let us know when her tooth comes through.

From what I have heard, some babies just get their teeth later than others. My sister's 16 month old did not start getting his teeth until after his first birthday. Her now 3 year old son started getting his around 11 months. Both her boys are very healthy!

According to my baby book, I got my two lower teeth at 8 months (but was eating solid foods at one month). My kids, on the other hand, got their first teeth at five months and four months, respectively. I have a friend whose son is 18 months old and has the two lower teeth. That's it. There isn't anything you can "DO" about it. They come when they come. Just be sure you're using a washcloth daily to wipe her gums to get her ready for future teeth brushing.

Hey Mom!
Please don't lose any sleep over her teething. It's very commom for kids to go into teething mode several times before they actually get their first tooth.
As long as she is not running a temp, is eating and sleeping well she will be just fine!
Please don't make a mountain out of a mole hill over this I hardly think you need to worry about baby dentures over this....yet.
Please take plenty of pictures, because she won't be like this long. When she dose start getting her teeth in THEN you worry. Things like coffee tables corners and wallpaper will be a thing of the past. So enjoy this little respite while you can
take care Mom, enjoy the quiet, it won't be to much longer before she'll be munching you out of your house and home.
Love, Nana

Like the others have said, it's normal. My 4th child, so far, has been the only one that finally got her first tooth at 1yo and walked at 1yo. I wouldn't worry about it. I had talked to my ped about it and she said, no big deal...she said that she has one patient that was almost 2yo and still no teeth.

Not only can that be normal, but they say that the longer it takes for teeth to come in, the stronger and healthier they will be. If she is chewing on sippy cups, she is probably starting to teeth again. My daughter only got a few teeth and then all of a sudden, several months later she had 6 come in at once. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about it yet. Although all my kids started getting their teeth around the 6 month mark, I know more than just a few friends whos kids didn't have any teeth until after one. It makes it hard for them to eat the foods they want, but that was the only problem. One didn't start getting his teeth until around 15 months. The doctor told them if teeth weren't coming in by 16 months then he would want to do some testing to make sure they even had teeth in the gums (a few kids are born without the teeth at all). Luckily it didn't come to that. So long story short, just be patient. Her time will come!!

This is totally normal. Although my two were early teethers and had most of their teeth by age 1 (not normal), my best friend's two girls had either none or maybe 1 tooth by age 1. They actually eat better than my two now! Don't let the lack of teeth slow you down in introducing table food though. They'll learn to "gum it". Just make sure you cut the pieces small enough and don't give them anything too hard to chew w/ their gums. But don't worry. All babies teeth at different times.

Like most other moms suggested...not to worry. My dtr. got her 1st 4 teeth all in one week at 14 months. We used to tease that she was the only kid who could practically eat a frozen TV dinner with no teeth. My dentist said that having teeth come in later is actually a benefit -
1) The teeth are safer inside the gums. They are not exposed to falls and hits that might chip/break them while they are learning to walk/run.
2) The teeth are actually getting stronger the longer they are inside the gums. The longer they are inside the stronger they are becoming.

Teething tip - all my kids LOVED frozen Gogurt tubes. The thick plastic doesn't break from the gums gnawing on them and when it defrosts you have a snack. We always had a few packages in the freezer.

Hi A.,

My son just turned 9 and has been "teething" (strong chewing and biting needs and acting like he is biting even when there is nothing in his mouth) on and off since he was 3 months old too, but still has no teeth. I brought this up to his Dr. and she confirmed that there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Some kids teeth later than others and she very frequently sees babies who don't get their first tooth until 12-13 months of age. Hope this helps:)

As a result, my first didn't lose his first tooth until days before his 7th birthday. Most kids start losing theirs in Kindergarten...so don't worry!

My son (who will be 6 years old in August) was a slow teether as well. We didn't see signs of teething until he was around 10-1/2 to 11 mos old!! I wondered if it had anything to do with breastfeeding, heredity (I asked everyone in our family did we have any slow teethers also!), etc... After a while, and since we went to his regularly scheduled pediatric visits, we didn't worry anymore. The doctor assured us that everything was fine (he had no other problems besides the teething). And eventually, the pegs came through! Also, to my benefit, he began weaning from breastfeeding around the same time. I thought he'd never have teeth and never stop breastfeeding (he only took bottles from his father in my absence, and practically went from breast to sippy cup). So it all worked out fine. He now has a perfect set of beautiful teeth, no gaps, over- or underbite, nothing! I would advise you to consult with your baby girl's pediatrician, make sure you keep the gums clean (wipe with a clean, wet cloth daily just as you would brush teeth), keep diet/ nutrition in check, and you guys should be fine!

Please don't worry about your baby's teeth. My daughter began teething around that age as well (it sounds like she is starting to teeth again.) I was concerned as well because it seemed kinda late in the game and ava to have no teeth so I got on the internet and did some research. It seems that it is considered "normal" for infants to start having teeth anywhere from 3 months until 17-18 months--it is unusual for a child to have teeth at 3 months or no teeth until 17 months but it does happen and is not a problem. Good luck!

One of my daughters didn't get her first tooth until she was nine months old and my other daughter got her first tooth at 4 months. It is different for each child so don't worry. Teething can be a very LONG process. Sometimes they go through fussy phases and want to chew on everything and then it seems to pass with no teeth. They will come sooner or later. Hang in there.

Hi A.-don't worry about this. Both of my kids did not even get their first tooth until a couple weeks before their 1st birthday! Of course with my first, I even took him to my dentist since I was concerned he didn't have any teeth and other babies did. Both my kids even got their two first teeth on top (instead of the normal on the bottom) and I took my first one back to the dentist worried he would not have any bottom teeth! Both have beautiful smiles now. Once my kids finally did get their first tooth (at almost a year old), the others all came very quickly and all their teeth are very straight (not sure if straight teeth has anything to do with late teeth, but some people told me that anyway).

My son's first tooth came in for Christmas when he was 11 months old. Next tooth came in 2 weeks later. Then, in between times we wouldn't see another tooth for 4-6 more months. When he turned 2, we STILL didn't have all the teeth. Now, at 2 1/2 we seem to have a mouth full of them, but I remember feeling how you were. Fortunately, my son took his time getting teeth, seemingly one at a time and it was real easy for him.

What's "normal"? I have a girlfriend who's daughter at 20 months only had two teeth in her whole head -- and they were her canines, not incisors. The poor thing then got a million teeth all at once when she was about2 1/2!

All the behavior indicates teething. I'd just keep on giving my daughter things to teeth on and don't stress -- they'll come.

My first child did not begin to get her first teeth until around 11 months old. In fact it was about the time my mother passed away and I thought she was just being whinney because she picked up on all the stress and sadness. When my older sister arrived for the funeral she recognized immediately that she was teething. My sister gave her a small dose of baby tylenol and let her chew on a cool damp wash cloth and she was a changed child in no time. Instead of getting a tooth here and there over time, she seemed to cut all eight teeth in just a few weeks.

Yes. Its normal. Neither of my children had a single tooth until they were 14 months old and they were already eating table food. Supposedly so the rumor is; that if your children get teeth later they will have better strong teeth than children who get them early. Children can battle teething for weeks/months at a time. My has been miserable the last 4 weeks screaming in pain at night. I guessed it was an ear infection but was wrong; sure enough 2 days ago his eye teeth broke through.

Yes, it is completely normal. I am a dental hygienist and I have seen kids without any teeth up to 15 months old. On average kids begin teething at about 6 months. This is just a general guideline. Just like babies start sitting up at 6 months, crawling at 9 and walking at 12. These are just guidelines to let parents know what they might expect, but each child is different and will develop at his own pace. Do not worry about the teeth. They will come in. My cousins were both 13 months before getting their 1st tooth. Children can also have teething symptoms for several months prior to getting a tooth. Don't worry about this, it will be fine and your little will have those chompers before you know it!
