I have a 14 month old who still takes two naps. I would like to know around what age did your toddler stop napping altogether? Sometimes my son would fight one of his naps but not that often. I just want to get myself prepared for the day when he will no longer taking naps.

Thanks.

What can I do next?

I've experienced both ends of the spectrum with this question! My daughter napped every day until she was 4. When she was 4, her brother was born, so I guess the change in the household got her out of her routine. But boy was it great to be 8 and 9 months pregnant and have her still napping :) My son, on the other hand, gave up his naps altogether (NO MORE NAPS) at one and a half. He was never a great (as in long, uninterrupted sleep) sleeper - he just never seemed to require as much as the rest of us. To this day, my daughter (age 19) loves her sleep, and sometimes takes afternoon naps in college - LOL. And my son is still both a night owl AND an early riser!

I have twins. We went to one nap around 18 months I think. My three and a half year old boy still naps every day, my girl about twice a week, but I require her to stay in her room the whole naptime. If I didn't make her stay in her room she would never nap, and really she needs a nap more like 5 days a week to be pleasant since she has temper tantrums when she doesn't sleep. My children have fought naps a number of times for a couple of weeks at a time, but they were always unpleasant if we skipped them so I enforced naps. I instituted rewards and consequences for taking a nap, I laid down with them when neccessary, I sat in thier room and read when laying down was too much reward for them. Anything to keep those naps. Most of my friends kids don't take naps at this age, not because thier children wouldn't be better off with naps, but because a) they were not persistant, b)they got tired of not being sure how the afternoon was going to go or c) they got tired of having to schedule thier day around naps. My children slept from 6pm to 6am at 14 months and now they sleep from 8-7,

My daughter probably stopped taking daily naps around the age of 3. She is 5 now and occasionally takes them. Sometimes I wish she would take them everyday, because if she doesn't have one, she is so crabby in the evenings! But, if she doesn't have a nap, she goes down to bed nice and easy.

My son took 2 naps *forever*! And then napped once a day until he was well into 4 then we had quiet time. We probably gave that up when he was close to 5. My 28 month old still naps.

Little ones need sleep during the day. There are times they fight it for a few days and then will go back to their routine. I think sometimes parents take them fighting it as it's time to call it quits on the naps but their little bodies need rest during the day.

My son took an afternoon nap until he was almost 4 years old. And they still make him take a nap at daycare. We don't make him now at home, but we do put him to bed early on days where he doesn't nap. I think you have a little while yet to prepare. :)

I have a seven month old son who takes one nap a day but he goes to bed between 6 and 7:30 p.m. and sleeps until 9 or 10. His naps are usually only an hour or so which is fine. But sometimes he refuses to take a nap so each day I put him in his room for quiet time, he may whine or cry but he knows at least an hour for mommy to have some quiet time too. Not to mention I need it since I am 4 months preggo with the second. lol. Every child is different.

:) good luck

Our daughter took naps through 3 years old and when she was 4 she had quiet time.. Sometimes during this she fell asleep and other times, she quietly looked at books while in her bed.

By 4 she was old enough for me to say... Mommy needs a nap. You can lay quietly next to me or you can stay in your room quietly..

She knew we were all better off if I could get a nap..

My daughter was down to one nap at 12 months and seemed to not need a daily nap by the time she was 3 1/2. However, depending upon the day's activities or varying circumstances, she still will take a nap. She is 4 now- and will still nap from time to time- but it's a definite fight and I don't "make" her nap unless there's a special occasion/party etc.

Don't worry about it. It varies for each child.

My son, took 3 naps a day, until about 1 years old.
Then from 1-2 years old... he took 2 naps a day.
Then from 2-3 years old... he'd still take 2 naps a day... then gradually from about 3 years old, he just took 1 nap a day.
Now at 4 years old, he STILL naps everyday, once.

He needs the naps. I don't force it. I go by his cues and needs.
He will not last all day without a nap. Or he gets way over-tired and mega fussy.

all the best,
Susan
