Hello everyone, I had been so excited to finally have my daughter graduate from kinder. I was also looking forward to her pictures with the cap & gown. When I called Thompson elementary I was told they don't do any of that for the kinder graduates. No pics, no graduation, no anything. I'm so disappointed. My question is, is this only in spring isd, or maybe only at that school? And also, does anyone know where I can take her to go get some pics, where they provide the cap&gown?

What can I do next?

Hi T.,

I can understand your disappointment. It is funny cause I am from a small town, but I went to 3 different schools, elementary, junior high, and high school, and we had graduation for each one! We didn't do a cap and gown for elementary and junior high but it was a very special ceremony and we dressed up and took pictures. I think if you want to get a cap and gown for your little girl and have pictures taken then more power to you. Graduating kindergarten is a big step in their life- so do what you think and don't let anyone discourage you. I have a feeling that when my little man goes to kinder and finishes we probably will do something similar. Some people are more sentimental than others and want to celebrate every possible achievement (raising my hand :) )

God Bless!

Caps and gowns are reserved for High school and college graduations - when they've actually achieved something special. I've never thought that kinder, 4th, or 5th or 6th or 7th or 8th grade "graduations" were teaching the kids how incredibly important that graduation actually is. Because the schools had so many "graduations", now my graduating Senior has decided to completely blow off his graduation ceremony. Let's let Graduation, be for those actually graduating and skip the bs. Sorry, I'm not trying to attack you - but come on.......it's not THAT big of a deal to "graduate" from Kindergarten.

Klein isd does not do this either. I think almost all public schools stopped doing it.

Hi T.,

My son is in the Magnolia ISD. They had Photo Texas come in and take cap and gown pictures, but did not have a graduation. Instead they had a "Promotion" the kids did not wear cap and gown. They sang some songs, and then each class had their names called, a poem (rolled up and tied with ribbon-gives that diploma "feel"), and medals given out for perfect attendance. We did receive a folder on the next to last day of school with a certificate signed by the principal stating kindergarten graduation along with an 8x10 cap and gown picture!

The pictures are adorable. Photo Texas has locations in Austin, College Park, and Baytown. If you are interested in contacting them here is the link http://www.phototexas.com. You may have to copy/paste into your web browser.

HISD lets individual teachers deside. My daughter had one but this year my sons teacher said no. SO I made the kids dipola's on my computer with each of their names and picked up some special things at the craft store and I made all their awards with stickers and glitter. I asked the teacher if we could hand them out to the kids last day of school. She said she would. Then at a function yesterday another teacher asked her what time we would be doing graduation and she said we weren't having one. SO all the parents I told what I was planning got together and told out teacher they wanted this :) NOW we have a graduation planned for 10:30 tomorrow (last day) Sometimes parents MUST insist and then do something about it. :)

I, too, believe that graduation (like many of life's milestones for teens that are taken too lightly) should be special. Kindergarten is hardly the place for a cap and gown. Maybe show your pride in some other way - a play date to Baskin Robbins with moms & girls from her class ? BTW, we were in HISD, and now in Spring Branch ISD (son) and my 15 yo is now in private. None of these schools on any level have a graduation except for h.s.

T.,
I have a daughter that is going into 5th grade and when she was in kindergarten she had a graduation, I also have a daughter in kindergarten and when I found out they no longer have graduations I was upset. one because I scrapbook and I have some pages in my oldest daughters book of her graduation so my youngest was looking forward to hers. and myself so my youngest could have the same thing. don't let anyone make you feel that you are wrong for looking forward to a graduation for you daughter, its exciting also sad seeing your babies grow up.
congrats on your daughter going to first grade.
J.

I teach in Spring ISD and at our school each grade level has an awards assembly to recognize all students for various things. No graduation though. My son didn't have a graduation when he was in kinder two years ago and we are in Klein. I think that it is mostly reserved for "private" schools.

Hi T.-

Hopefully someone can help you out with your pictures but I just wanted to let you know that while Conroe ISD (and particularly Tough Elementary School) does have a kindergarten graduation ceremony the kids do NOT wear cap and gown. They recite a few poems and sing a few songs and then each teacher reads their names.

Good luck,
K.
