hello, my wife's nipples are sticking to her pads and we're wondering if there's anything she can do to help not stick. When she's fixing to feed she's gotta pry or put water or cream on them to loosen the nipple up from the pad. Any suggestions? Thanks

What can I do next?

Put on some nipple oinment before putting the pads on. The oinment is for breastfeeding moms wth dry or or cracked nipples. It is safe for the baby.

Poor girl! I had that fun too. She needs WASHABLE breastpads. They are the only ones that don't "fuzz off" on your nipples.

SHe can find them at ToysRUs, Target, Walmart, etc.

She can also find BEAUTIFUL ones through Etsy.com - these are fabulous: http://www.etsy.com/listing/46561069/free-shipping7-setsb...

Patting the breast dry before replacing the pads may help to a degree. Also, a little bit of lanolin will keep them from sticking directly to the skin. I also was a big fan of the washable pads, but I often had to put a disposable on top of that to make sure I didn't leak through when my milk let down.

Lanolin, I liked Lansinoh brand. She might also try different pads. I had the same problem with Johnson's nursing pads but loved Lansinoh brand as well--I've never disliked one of their products and just paid the extra for the pads. She might also try cloth nursing pads, and putting some of the lanolin cream on the pads as well.

It's probably the type of pad that she's using. I loved the Playtex brand pads. I never stuck to them. Make sure she changes them often if she's leaking a lot. If she's not leaking very much, there's no real need for a pad.

Ouch! Yeah, I remember how much that hurt. I had the best luck with the playtex pads, but have heard washables are even better. And using lanolin ointment on them keeps the milk from drying and getting stuck, it is the consistency of vaseline and I never had that problem when I used it. I didn't have to use the pads after a few months, but kept a few around in case I needed to use the lanolin for soothing purposes. After a growth spurt, I always needed it. And it will get on your clothes, so the pads were helpful for that.

At babie R Us they have a breast pad with lanolin built in. I LOVED these! They worked great. Also, if you have reusable pads, try Nipple Butter from Earth Mama Angel Baby. I liked that soooooo much better than Lansinoh. I found Lanolin to be sticky/tacky and would hurt to put on and off during those first few months. Tell her GREAT job on breastfeeding!! Hang in there, it keeps getting easier and easier, I promise.

The Medela Lanolin (in a yellow tube) is also good because it is not nearly as sticky at the Lansinoh and won't bleed through as badly. She could also try Soothies pads if her nipples are hurting because of it. But it sounds like fabric pads and some air dry time is probably a good call. And if all else fails, contact a lactation consultant for some one on one tips! (Also, I used the Lansinoh disposable pads and never had issues with them.)

They make washable wool ones (I'm serious) that are great but I don't remember a brand name, google them?

Ok, two things. The nipples are probably very dry and sticking due to milk leakage or dripping. The best thing to do is keep the nipples moisturized and the breast lotion Lansinoh is the best I found for this. It does not harm the baby and can be used as much as needed. I used it after every feeding and after showers. Remember not to use soap during the bath since it dries out the nipples and is not necessary to use when breast feeding. Sometimes a different pad brand can also help.....Lansinoh has a good brand as well. Good for you daddy for watching out for her!

Lansinoh is great--you don't have to wipe it off before you feed since it's totally natural. Also, air dry! It's healthy for a lot of reasons.

I think it's wonderful that your wife is bfing and you're helping--stick with it! It's cheaper, healthier, faster and more convenient. It does get easier :-)

Like another mom said, the washable/reusable breast pads work AMAZINGLY. No sticking, and no having to buy box after box.
I had 6 pair and would use 5 pair and then when using the last I would just quickly handwash the others in the sink with warm water and a little natural soap (scent free because babies are sensitive to that).
You can get them at any baby store or even target- and you'll save money as a bonus! :)

hi H.,
when i was breast feeding i had the same problem...so does my friend, even w/her second child. we used "breast cups"....they cover the nipple w/o thouching them & help to protect them for sticking or cracking. i think they are avalible at target or even babies-r-us. you just clean them offen so that they don't stink....i used to put them in 50/50 peroxide & water while i took a shower & during the feedings to keep them clean & odor free. good luck & god bless!! I had the same problem and I think it really does matter what pads you use, I just honestly can't remember what brand I used to use. I remember trying the cloth pads that you could just throw in the washer but they were the worst, my nipples would be glued to them. The best thing is to let them air dry after nursing. If they are leaking a lot then there might not be too much you can do. After a month or so of breastfeeding I didnt' have that problem anymore and didnt' need pads.
