Nightime Potty-training

My son potty trained easily but I (mistakenly!) didn't potty train him at night at the same time. I have been putting pull-ups on him for naps and nighttime and now regret it. Does anyone have any tips for potty training at nighttime? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi B.,
From my experience, I have found that actual night time training is more difficult, especially with boys.

My oldest trained early and easily (and his little brother trained the same way), however we are STILL in pull ups at night...he's 5.

TO be able to hold it that long is a physiological thing and some kids' bodies just can't handle it.

We've tried limiting liquids, waking him up before we go to bed and its still hit or miss. We get about 1 dry night a month.

I don't say this to discourage you, but just to say that for some kids its just that their bodies just aren't able to hold it all night.

I wish you luck.

My daughter potty trained before she turned 2, but we didn't even try to deal with sleeping. She started refusing pull-ups at nap time after 3 months or so and rarely has an accident during that time. Over night, though, is a totally different story. We are approaching 3 years old and we get 3-4 dry nights a week now (which is a huge improvement - we used to get 1 / month). She is paying more attention to it, and we're giving her a lot of praise, but until her body is ready for it we don't want to push the issue. She just doesn't wake up when she needs to go. Some kids aren't ready until they are older. I don't feel like it is a big deal. She won't be in pull-ups overnight forever, and it is just one a day so it is not a big expense.

We just potty trained our twins a few weeks ago. the book said to use pullups at night and naps until they are much older and wake up regulary with a dry pullup. I guess kids have accidents occasionally at night . If it's before they turn five it's not consisdered bed wetting. I too need to work on limiting their liquid intake before bed to ensure that every morning they wake up dry. you are doing great!

You didn't necessarily make a mistake. Depending upon how old your son was when you potty trained, it may not have been possible to night train him. I recently read that an adult body has a physiological response that wakes us up when our bladder is getting full while we sleep...but a child does not develop this right away. I wish it told me which approximate age it develops, but I guess all kids are different.
