I have a 2 week old that has a runny/stuffy nose. I noticed it yesterday when I was nursing, and thought it was because he was pressed up against my breast, but it turns out it lasted most of the night- he doesnt seem to be that uncomfortable, he is nursing, sleeping, and wetting/messing his diaper. As of now this is the only symptom he has, but Im freaking out! I have a 3 yr old that had RSV when he was 6 wks old, and he right now has had a yucky nose and nasty cough. Im trying to keep him and my oldest son away from the baby as much as possible, and making sure we all wash our hands thouroghly! Ive called the pediatricain too already knowing that all they would tell me to do the cool mist humidifier, saline drops, bulb suringe, and keep him propped up while sleeping. I just wanted to see if ANYONE has been through something similar to this, and what youve done to help comfort baby..... it just kills me that I cant do much for him, and it scares me that Ive already had a kiddo w/ upper respitory virus at such a young age. Help, please!
Thanks,
D.

I have two thoughts that will I hope will ease your mind a bit! First, it's spring and allergens are in the air! My whole family is stuffy/runny right now as things are growing and blooming. Your baby might just be adjusting to the new spring "stuff" in the air.

Also, I remember my ped telling me that babies only breathe through their noses, so even when they have just a little congestion, it sounds much worse than it is. As adults, we breathe through both our mouths and noses, so we can "mask" our stuffy sounds a little better. Although your little one sounds stuffy, he probably isn't suffering as much as he may sound like he is, especially since you said he's still eating, etc.

If the eating changes, then I'd be concerned about dehydration, etc.

It seems that it's probably just a little congestion, nothing serious. You're doing great with the hand washing, etc. The best thing to do is just watch it and see if he gets worse or develops any other symptoms. RSV is going around, and older kids can get it, it just doesn't manifest itself in the same way, and it is much less severe than in the babies, so it might be worth taking your older son in to get tested (they can do a nose swab) just to give you peace of mind.

Although I'm sure this isn't your problem, I wanted to keep you aware that my son had a really stuffy nose from basically birth and it took us a couple months to realize he had a problem with milk. A stuffy, snotty nose is one sign, so is an exzema rash. Just keep your eye out in case something else develops, but I'm sure your son is just congested!

Good luck!

Can't remember how early my ped said it was ok but remembering our baby being around 6months old but still worth a call to see- Call your doc to see if it is to early to use a Vicks plug in... they are wonderful for the whole family except I am not sure of how early you can use them w/ little ones. If they say they are fine to use around the littlest one, I would just not plug it real close to their bed.
Hope this helps and sorry I don't have more for sure info about them!

RSV is going around now. My son has bronchialits and RSV - our peditrician gave us an inhaler (with a spacer) and we are doing the cool mist humidifier and saline drops too. Sorry about the kiddos.

Take a deep breath! You know what to do, and your pediatrician is aware of the situation. Keep close tabs on baby and keep big brother at a distance. My little guy was congested for weeks, but he never ran a temp and it never seemed to bother him. Of course, that didn't stop it from scaring the bejesus out of me! I was lucky that my ped would let me bring in the baby; he was always very cautious in his examination and reassuring, and I felt better that he had seen the baby. Even though, as you said, I only heard the same advice over and over!

I had totally forgotten my son did this. It was my first big worry because everything else was going well, but I was sure that he was either sick or that he was allergic to something and was afraid I'd have to get rid of my pets. I packed up all the candles and threw out air fresheners and eliminated every smell possible. My husband thought I was nuts. :) And I probably was a little. My son wasn't bothered by it in the least and had no other symptoms, and my pediatrician said sometimes newborns have stuffy runny noses for a while. I think she said it was because their sinuses are clearing out and adjusting to being out of the womb. I put a drop of saline in his nostrils a couple of times a day and that was about all I could do. My son's cleared up around 3 or 4 weeks I think. Like I said, mine had no other symptoms. If any other symptoms show up I would take him in but it could just be a totally normal newborn thing.

Aww! Poor little guy! It's hard to see a newborn sick. Sounds like he just has a little cold/congestion. I would call and tell your pediatrician about it. Run a humidifier in his room and suck his nose out with the aspirator. Not much else you can do. I'm pretty sure 2 weeks is much too young to give any sort of medication to. I hope he gets better soon! And call your ped! You'll feel much better knowing you told his doc. I reported EVERYTHING to my son's pediatrician when he was so small. ***Sorry! I just saw that you called your pediatrician.
