Hi I know this is probably a silly question but I am a first time mom so I have a lot of questions. My six day old daughter has not had a bowl movement in 2 days. As of yesterday she is eating every 2-3 hours but still no poo. Is this normal as we are transiting from colstrum to breast milk or should I call her dr.? Thanks for your advice!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She went! Haha I love that there is a website where this is normal conversation. But I did talk to the dr.'s office anyway (Interlachen peds) and they said that with breastfeeding it's normal for them to skip a few days, while their systems get used to working to right way. But they past few days she's been great!

For someone that asked the website for my business is www.strollerstrides.net/wintersprings we are on maternity leave right now but we will be having a grand re-opening at the end of March. All the details will be put on that website. :)

Hi K.,

Congrats on your new baby girl! My daughter just turned 2, so it's been a while, but I seem to remember the pediatrician being concerned if she didn't have a bowel movement every day. I wouldn't freak out or anything, but I would encourage you to call your pediatrician and let him/her know. Who is your pediatrician? I know that at my daughter's doctor, I could often get the nurse on the phone and ask some questions, to help me determine whether I really needed to bring her in. It was very helpful. This was Dr. Hayne with Physician's Associates at Waterford Lakes - now we see the Phys. Assoc. branch in Oviedo with Dr. Wiest, and like her very much, too.
I am curious about your stroller strides business; do you have a web site?

Good luck with your new baby girl!
S.

Yes, I think breastfeeding babies can go up to a week (if I remember correctly) and there is no cause for concern. I know it is crazy to think that but you could always call your doctor to see what they say-at least our doctor has an after hours line that is very helpful.

I know you have had a lot of responses. But I would recommend what to expect the first years book for your sanity as a new mom. We used this book amoung others that can help with questions that are normal for first time parents and what you can do. Also this helps cut down the calls to the docs office or a question at 2 AM cause it seems to happen in the middle of the night!

Good luck I have been there!

I wrote my response before reading yours! Glad all went okay. My nephew had a problem with the valve going from his stomach to his intestines at a young age and wasn't pooping :)

K. I would recommend calling your doctor right away...make sure you write down when she is eating and for how long and record her wet diapers...

good luck!

hugs,

Being a new mom is not always easy. Everything is new. I had issues with my oldest when she was born, with constipation. I would definately call your doctor to see what they would recomment b/c I don't think it is normal. But I am not a doctor. The best place to get your answers is your pediatrician. They expect new Moms to call lots to get their questions answered & they are usually the best answers. Good luck
