I have a 3 week old who grunts all the time. It is mostly when you move him or right when we put him down in his bassinett. Sometimes he turns red and curls up, but he doesn't cry...just grunts. I dont know if he is just a noisy baby who grunts when he's not happy or if this is indicative of something else, like gas?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your help. I did take my son to the dr. and they took xrays and found that he has a lot of gas. Doc advised me to keep up on the Mylicon at each feeding. Thanks again.

Newborns are noisy - lol! He will let you know when he's not happy (ie crying) Babies are pretty good at that. All of mine were grunters. If a baby is gassy to the point of unhappiness they will scream and cry nearly inconsolably. If your baby does reach this point try the football clutch (tucking him/her with tummy down over your forearm and gently bounce), turn on the dryer, lay a blanket on top and lay them tummy down on it or lay them down on their back and gently rotate their legs up towards their tummy and then back down. But other than that grunting is completely normal.

HI H., I feel your pain!! When both my boys were newborns they made so much noise, no one would sleep!! We moved them to a crib in their own room after about a month, and everyone slept so much better!!! Good Luck!!

Newborns are noisy, huh!? Grunting is pretty typical. :) If he turns red he might trying to poop. I thought my girl was constipated, but the doctor said that she just wasn't sure which muscles to use to poop yet, so she turned red trying at first. She was quite the "grunter" too. I wouldn't worry a bit.

My two week old son does this too and my doctor said that some newborns do this. That they are just simply noises that he is making. He also said that he may have gas during those times or be trying to poop. It isnt anything to be concerned about though.

H., My little girl used to do just that and it scared the heck out of me. I thought she was in such pain. I heard a lot of theories, including from our pediatrician when I called her in the middle of the night! In retrospect, I think she was just learning how her body works, you know? Using new digestive muscles, etc. we stressed a lot about gas and finally went with the more expensive formula for sensitive tummies. I don't know if it really helped or not. It seemed to? The important part is she outgrew it. Hang in there and good luck!

Babies grunt, meow, coo and cry. They make all sorts of noises. Unless he seems distressed, don't read too much into it. Babies are quite a jukebox of sounds!
