Okay, I was suppose to go to Party City today and get some party supplies (horns, etc.) for the 3 year olds at a party tonight. I don't know if I'm going to make it. My husband got called to work today and I don't know when he will be home. I can always take my 3 kids, but I want to avoid it as my 3 year old doesn't know where we are going tonight. It's a surprise that we are going to spend the night at one of her very good friends house. Anything the kids can do tonight to keep them busy, or anything I can make in advance while my kids are sleeping for them to have at the party?

What can I do next?

Playdough! Go buy a bunch of playdough (because you can never have enough-- at least two pack/cups per kid) and then search your kitchen for cutters, rolling pins, (even plastic tumblers can be used for this) etc. Craft sticks can go a long way to augment playdough play, as can various little artists palettes, etc.

I've kept a playdough table open during long holiday events and it was well-used, something that the kids can stop and then go back to, and the parents often find themselves having a nice time, too.

How about googling sound makers? Maybe they can make something that makes noise out of toilet paper rolls?

I know its late now but maybe for next year. Its an idea I saw on pinterest. You get a paper bag for each child for every hour starting at eight. You put a clock on each bag with the hour hand pointing at the hour, eight, nine, ten, eleven and twelve. In each bag you put something fun. Eight you could put in playdough (even homemade in a plastic bag) nine a notepad with markers or crayons, ten and eleven whatever you want, I would save the noisemakers until Midnight just so I wouldn't have to listen to them as long. You could have coded them and pasted on the clocks after you arrived to the friends house. Then it would still have been a surprise and you could still have planned in advance. Sometimes I'm not very good at expressing myself but I hope you get the idea. I saw it too late to do for 2013 but plan on doing it to welcome in 2014.

Make giant numbers 10-9-8, etc. so you can do a dramatic countdown.

Although I'm sure with christmas they have had their fill of cookies, you can always whip up a batch of sugar cookies and have them decorate them. You probably have sprinkles and chocolate chips lying around the house they can use so you don't have to get out. You don't even have to roll and cut them just make them into balls and flatten them out before you bake.

"Horns" with TP or paper towel tubes is good. Just have them color on them or use stickers and they can make their own noise through them!

My kids love to make placemats. That would be fun to do for the new year. Just use a sheet of construction paper (maybe tape 2 together if necessary) and have the kids decorate with crayons, markers, stickers, etc. You can cut out shapes from other pieces of paper that they can glue on too.

Or if you have any diaper boxes or cereal boxes lying around cut them into rectangles, squares or circles, cut a hole in the center and have them decorate a picture frame. They could even put a picture from tonight or tomorrow to commemorate the new year. Dried pasta and buttons would be fun to use for decoration.

kinda late now, but i saw a cute idea. take one of those cookie tins you got this year and decorate it with something like shiny garland. then fill it with favorite things from 2012...pics or words written down. then next year open your time capsule from the past year.
