New Mother Worries

Hi. My son is currently 15 weeks old. He's got some bottom teeth working on cutting and I've been treating his pain with low doses of Walgreens' Infant tylenol (0.4, just half of the regular dose amount). I've noticed he had a bit of diharea, but that didn't have me too worried because I heard that it can happen with teething babies. I had started him on the rice cereal with his forumla about a week prior to the teething with no changes to his diaper habits. All of a sudden though last night he had a dark green bowel movement.. I checked to see if he was feverish and that if his stomach was hard at all, but all were fine... From that one stool he got enough of a rash that even started to bleed a little (mind you I was awake while he even made the movement and had only a slight redness before). Should I be concerned? He has a doctor's appointment in a week for his 16week checkup, but I'm wondering if I should also set up an early one just to get him looked at. Any advice or similar stories would be wonderful.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well this morning I checked him immediately and it seems it has slowly started to harden again, but not too much. His poo has a slight grey hue to it, well, I can tell it's not the same color anymore. Yeah, he has no blood in these movements and I've already started a decitin treatment on his bottom. Thank you for all the advice!

It is probably just connected with the teething. Doctors will ALL tell you that teething does NOT cause diarrhea, runny nose or diaper rash and ALL Mom's will be able to give you dozens of instances there they occur at the same time as the teething. I would suggest going to the store and picking up some Hylands Homeopathic Teething Tablets, they are what both of my daughters have used to soothe sore gums from teething with their sons.
You could try some Desitin or Bag Balm on his little bottom to help the rash clear up....make sure his fluid intake is good, to prevent dehydration and just relax.

Hey there...I used to worry all the time but once they get older it gets easier. Your are going to see ALL kinds of crazy, smelly and gross poops. I suggest getting some diaper cream and giving it a few hours or overnight. He should be fine. Some babies have sensitive tushies. If you are still worried call the doctor to ease your mind. Good luck.

My best diaper rash trick is to use a hair dryer to ensure the skin is COMPLETELY dry before applying any cream. I used very little diaper cream while my daughter was in diapers because I made sure she was dry when changing her...rashes (including yeast infections) cleared up in a day when I had to use a cream. I like Aquaphor, butt paste, and Wedela Calendula cream for rashes.

One thing, ask your doctor for the correct dose of Tylenol and Motrin. If you are going to administer pain and fever relievers, you should give them in the FULL correct dose. Otherwise you are just giving them something for no reason AND if it doesn't work, it makes it too easy to overdose them when you try to give them more. I'm not scolding you, I used to think that less was more too...I hate giving my daughter anything, but my doctor explained why it doesn't make sense to give less than the recommended dose for weight.

I second the Hyland's tablets...worked great for my daughter.

Nothing you describe sounds too concerning, but you do need to get the rash under control or it can get infected. Try rinsing him in clear water several times a days to really get everything off his skin. Adding a little baking soda can take away the sting. Dry throroughly before diapering.

Our Dr. says not to worry about any color poop unless you see blood. The color will depend on what they ate and much bile they produce. Bile will turn poop green and is irritating to the skin and diarrhea still has a lot of stomach acid in it that hasn't been neutralized. Some zinc oxide ointment should help the rash (Desitin). Lately my 13 month old has been bingeing on blueberries and her poops look like spinach:) (Gross, I know)
Relax and get some sleep.

i would wait until your appointment but that is just me. use buttpaste or desitin and keep an eye on it, diaper rash is a pain but it's not cause to go to the dr. by all means call them if you are concerned, but in my experience the nurses and dr's stock answer is "better bring him in" so if they say that don't let it alarm you. good luck and congrats on your beautiful gift :)

Also try Buttpaste. Yes sounds weird but it does work. Or try a triple action ointment. That should work. Sometimes bleeding does happen. I know that you may panic with blood we all do but it does happen. Call you pedi and see what they say what you should do. But make sure that you tell the dr @ your visit. Tell him everything that you just told us. Good Luck!

I think it sounds pretty normal, the color changes depending on food. As far as the rash my son ( 9 months) often gets a rash from a bowel movement even though he gets changed right away I use desitin and within a few hours it looks better. If you are real worried sometimes its best to go see the Dr. I am a worry wart and I went often just to nease my mind.

I usually use plain old vasiline on my kids bottoms for diaper rash... it usually clears up in a few days if not the day I start using it. But my kids have had issues with some of the diaper rash creams - they made my kids get worse not better... so that is why I stick with the vasiline.

Sometimes it take a while for different things to breakdown in baby's tummies - the cereal might have taken almost a week to breakdown & exit his body. Personnaly, I have never put cereal w/ the formula... I always feed the cereal & other foods with a spoon. But I did start my youngest on cereal around 3 mo. because he had doubled his birth weight (of 8#), was watching me eat & opening his mouth when I did & doing chewing motions when I was eating. He also was able to hold his head up on his own.

I don't think he need to go to the doc, unless he is asking sick as well. But if you feel more comfertable - call the doc's offfice & talk to the nurse... they will be able to tell you if he needs to be seen earlier or not.

Good luck & congratz on the little one.

I have no idea but whenever you have a concern, no matter how small, you should just call your pediatrician and ask to talk to a nurse. If they don't let you do this you should swith docs to one that has nurse consults. My ped even has doc consults every morning from 8-8:30.
