Neighbor Making Dwelling Unsafe to Live In

I live in a house that is split into two different apartments but we share the enclosed porch space to get to both of our doors. My neighbor has some sort of mental issue and she is now getting high and bringing unsavory traffic in and out of the apartment. I am concerned because it is escalating to the point where a man was waiting outside of the house at 11pm at night when I got home from work yelling to get her attention and then tried to follow me inside. The way he was talking to me it was like he was trying ot intimidate me. I have spoken to her several times about this issue and it is only getting worse. Can I get out of my lease and get my security deposit back because I have been talking to the landlord about it and he does nothing. I don't feel safe and I definitely cannot even have my children visit because of this issue. Somebody please help.

What can I do next?

Start calling the police every single time. The landlord will do something when he starts getting police reports about illegal activities happening on his property.

Have you reported her to the police? Ask them NOT to come to your door and bring attention to the fact that you called. Offer to go the the police station and give your statement. Stop talking to her yourself -unsafe!

I agree with calling the police. I would also check your lease and if it says anything in regards to illegal activity. I know there are landlord/tenant laws and you may want to consult with a lawyer. You might be able to go to court to be let out of your lease and have your deposit returned. Document everything that you do and she does!!! Good Luck!

I would agree with others who said call the police. You may or may not be able to keep it secret that it was you that called, but it's going to become obvious. Document it every time. Ask if the police can send a report to the landlord/property owner. If not you should. After a few times, the l.l. should be concerned enough to do something. If not tell him you will be breaking your lease and seeking council to regain your security deposit. L.L. have a responsibility to uphold certain safety issues and documentation that you have reported these issues to him, and he has ignored them, should allow you to be entitled to the return of your deposit. Good luck, and stay safe!

Put your complaits in writing to your landlord and send the letter certified, return receipt requested. Then, make a police report every time these unsavory characters are hanging out in the front. After you've made 3 or more police reports, write the landlord again, provide the police report numbers and then tell him very clearly that if he doesn't do something within 30 days, you will have no choice but to break the lease and move.

Other than that, I don't know if there is anything you can do.
