Needing Advice from Experienced Moms on Mouth Issue

Four the past four days I have noticed what looks like skin peeling in my five month old mouth. At first I thought it was thrush but we have since found out it is not. It is just looks like peeling skin on the inside of his lips and cheek right by his mouth. He has had a cold and has been breathing through his mouth at night, not sure if its related. What could be causing this? Have any of you experienced this with nursing babies?

What can I do next?

If he suckles very hard (how well does he latch on?), he might have developed a lip blister or callous.

What about chapped lips? I've seen pretty bad chapped lips (at different ages) and the skin cracks and peels......

Concerned he might have a food allergy/intolerance. The corners of my lips crack and bleed *chelitis or stomatitis* and my lips turn purple and then peel if I consume green tea. Something about green tea doesn't like me (but I have to drink a lot of it at one time of consume it over a few days for the effects to show up).

Another idea is yeast/Candida. I know you stated he doesn't have thrush. But when I had my yeast/Candida issue, it was system wide. I would get a white coating on the inside of my cheeks that would "peel off" in thin layers. I, too, wondered what it was. Then I did a Candida cleanse--and the white stuff on the inside of my cheeks and the "peeling" disappeared once I had killed off the Candida.

If your baby has had any antibiotics at all--or if you have been taking antibiotics and you're breast feeding--then yes, he could have a yeast/Candida problem, and this is how it is manifesting.

But then again, it could also be a symptom of a food allergy/intolerance. But having gone through something similar myself as an adult, I would lean more toward it being yeast/Candida overgrowth.

Ask your pedi. Possibly ask a dermatologist to figure it out.
