Need to Buy a New Vaccuum Cleaner

I need to buy a new vaccuum. The Kirby I inherited from my grand-mother is biting the dust so to speak. I need one that cleans really well, especially with kids and animals around. I need one that has an attachement for stairs and tile. I don't care if it has a bag or not. And I don't want one that is really, really expensive. Any suggestions on what to buy or which ones to stay away from?

Thanks,
L.

Lisa,

I thought that the Kirby was replaceable for life. ? I have one, and even though it's a relic, it really works the best. I would call Kirby and see if they will replace it due to normal use.

Good luck,
D.

I would go to Longs on South Congress. They have a large variety of vaccuums to choose from and are very knowledgeable. Thay also do service there. I bought a Rikkar from them 4 years ago and have been very happy with its ability to clean up after 2 adults, 2 kids, and 2 very hairy dogs.

Good Morning Lisa,

Kirby has a lifetime warranty. You can take it in to have it repaired and if they can't repair it they will give you a new one. Also, if you are just wanting a newer model you can send it in for $175 and they will upgrade for you. The newer models have all of the attachments as well as a shampooer for your carpet and upholstery. There is a Kirby store in Conroe on Loop 336 but I'm sure there are other locations. Hope this helps

Lisa,
Looks like you've recieved some great advice on repairing your Kirby, so I'm sure you'll consider that route first. If you still decide to shop new vacs, I have the "original" yellow Dyson from YEARS AGO and I STILL LOVE IT!!!! It picks up sooooo much junk down to the tinyist litle bits of dust (we have doghair in our home, too!). Attatchments are easy to use. It was SO WORTH the money. I may have bought 1 or 2 other vacums by now since I've had my Dyson because they all seem to work well in the begining and loose their strength in time. IF YOU WANT TO SAVE A FEW $, I remember that I opened a Target card to get a 30% discount on the vacum, and then just paid it off. You can do that at Home Depot, or almost any retailer that carries the vacum you choose. Just a thought! Good luck!

About 2 months ago I bought a Eureka from Wal-Mart. I can't remember the model name but it's yellow, it has an attachement to use on the furniture made just for pet hair, and it gets ALL of the hair up off the floor. I have a Dingo and a Chihuahua, so I have to vacuum everyday and it is awesome. And I think it was less than $100.

We bought a Dyson this past fall and it is WONDERFUL!!!!!!!! Can't believe how much cat hair it picks up...maybe a bit more on the expensive side, but WELL worth every cent of it. Good luck with your decision........

We bought the Dyson Slim, it is not as heavy as the orginal Dyson's and we did get it at the Linen's & Things close out sale, which saved us over $100.00..........but if you receive the 20% off coupons from Bed, Bath and Beyond........that will help......

Have you called Kirby? They sometimes can retro fit your old vac with new parts for half the cost of a new store brand vac. Just a thought...

I would get an Electrolux. They sell them at Lowes. I have an Electrolux carpet cleaner. I LOVE it. I have had it for about 8 years. They came to my house and demonstrated it before I bought it. They also demo'd the vacuum. I needed the cleaner worse at the time. I was going to buy the vacuum but we pretty much changed all our carpet to tile. The cleaner works on tile too. I only have carpet in my bedroom and that is going to come up soon. Anyway they are not badly priced and they do work great. Good luck....
PS. They are a pretty green color too.... lol

Hi Lisa! We have the Dyson for pets. It's the purple one. I do love it but it is REALLY heavy. I have stairs in my house and it makes it really hard to vaccumum them. I don't know much about the Bissell Pet Hair Vac but it seems really good for the price. It's under $200. They Dyson is almost $500 I believe. Bissell also has a pet hair hand for $35.
Good luck!

I have a 10 year old Oreck that is still working great. I also love that is it so lightweight. Hoovers have gotten consistently great reviews on Consumer Reports. They are also very reasonably priced. You can search through Consumer Reports magazines at the library. Your Kirby can also be fixed if you like. I have never been a fan of the Kirby as they are extremely heavy.

We got Dyson for $475 from Sears...it's awsome! It works on carpet, tiles and on wooden floor efficiently. I have a three year old so yeah it works best when you have kids around..it has attachements with which we clean stairs, sofa, fans, curtains,etc...it's bagless so easy to clean. We need to change filters though.
Hope this helps.

whatever vaccuum you buy, try it out from the display in the store.
Dyson is the new "it" one.
I personally find it to be a very heavy vaccuum and cannot use it.
I don't have a preference on a vaccuum, just wanted to let you know about the heaviness of the dysons

You can spend not too much and buy 2 or 3 vacuums that won't work or you can buy a Dyson. They are a bit heavy but the attachments are always there and easy to use. I'm not sure why it matters if the thing is heavy- I seldom carry mine around. Upstairs we have an older Oreck since the dog doesn't go up there and traffic is lighter. Every once in a while I take the Dyson up there to get the floors REALLY cleaned. I also have a Roomba that I set loose in the smaller rooms- office, bathroom, bedrooms and it works better than any of them- although it needs to be emptied a lot! But I agree that Kirby can probably be repaired. If you have a two story- repair it , stick it upstairs and get the Dyson for down- best of both worlds!!

We have a Bissell. I forget what the model is called, but it is desgined for pet hair. That was important for us because we have a dog, and my hair is long. Between the 2 of us we were breaking vacs left and right. So we bougth this one, and it works really well. It is about $160.00 at Target. I don't expect it to last forever, but will outlast the others, and seemed like a more reasonable option than the pricy ones. It is bagless, and has several filters that have to be cleaned regularly, but I love it.

K. K is correct. Those Kirbys are work horses. My mom still has hers ans that thing has been mistreated and can always be repaired..Here is the repair place in Georgetown..
Georgetown Kirby Company 107 Halmar Cv Georgetown, TX ###-###-####.

The new vacuums like Dyson are great, but the best ones are like $300. I used one this Christmas at a clients home. It has a Hepa system and works on every surface. I loved it, but when I went to price it, it was $500.!

I have a friend in Atlanta that actually has one Vaccuum upstairs and another down stairs. She purchased one at a garage sale.

Something a little different to consider...I absolutely LOVE my iRobot Roomba! It won't work on your stairs, but it works great on tile, wood floors, and carpet (it may not work well on shaggy carpet). The most amazing thing is that you don't have to lift a finger and your floor gets clean! I don't have pets but I've heard that it's great for pet hair. The nice thing is that you can run it every day to keep up with the dirt. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Ummmm...is it really that you do not like the Kirby that you inherited from your grandmother??? Because despite the fact that it has "bit the dust" I guarantee you it can be fixed. They have a website that will help you find a service shop located most conveniently to you.

The reason I know this is that I HATED my mother's Kirby and PRAYED for it to "bite the dust" when it finally did, she had the damn thing fixed.

Then..years later...my husband went and purchased one for me as a surprise. His thought was that it would be great for me and for the kids...

Anyways...this is why I know that short of dropping it from a skyuscraper...they can pretty much fix anything that is wrong with it...

Good Luck..

i would go with a Dyson all the way! i know they're expensive, but they are definitely worth every single penny! we have an 80 pound golden retriever who sheds like mad and we were basically going through a vacuum cleaner every year and still not getting everything up. so we decided to pay the extra money and go for the Dyson Ball Vacuum. We've had ours for 3 years now and have no complaints. Its a "bagless" type but all the filters, container, etc. are easily dismantled and washed which is fantastic. Lots of attachments and nice features. Now we have our first baby and i am not at all concerned about our carpets! i hope this is helpful. oh, also, sometimes you can find them on sale at home stores like Bed Bath and Beyond (we did) or on Amazon.com. have a great day!
