Need Something to Keep 9 Month Old from Chewing on Crib

My little girl has been chewing on her crib for about a month now and I don't know what to do. I have seen crib guards but those do not fit our crib railing. I hope that it's not toxic... I would assume since it's a brand new crib that they would not make it with toxic paint. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am so thankful for all of the responses on here... I was blown away with the amount of ideas I received, THANK YOU! I ended up taking two cloth diapers and safety pinned them to the sides of the crib where she was chewing. Ever since I did that I have yet to see any paint on her face... so I think it worked!!! Again, thank you so much for your suggestions!

Safety hang a few teething toys from her crib. That way you can wash them as well. Plus it may keep her occupied if she wakes in the morning for a while.

Go to Wal-Mart and get inexpensive cloth and have someone sew a wall type covering from the inner portion of the crib top rail to the bottom of the mattress. maybe make it a mess type/breatheable/see through type of material...

Good luck.

I couldn't see what the other mom's wrote, so I am not sure if I am being redundant or dnot. I had the same problem and there were no "Crib guards" when I was having babies, LOL! Anyway, we used towels and wrapped them around the crib and used the clear tape(large size) to secure the towels. The chewing stopped almost immediately when he realized the towles weren't so tasty. I would also suggest giving her an alternatertive to chew on, such as something hard like a babies teether, or even a pacifier. I hope this helps hun. I am 46 and my kids are all grown, but I enjoy help young moms, so let me know if I can be of more assistance.

My daughter did that to the side rail of her crib. It was the same location I had her musical water scene toy tied. I ended up putting one of my old receiving blankets over the edge and then tying the musical toy around the railing just like before. She stopped chewing on the crib after that.

Good luck.

Hi A.!
Go get the "Gummy" rails at Babies R US. It is just a strip that you peel off and it will fit any crib. I was looking for the same thing and they work well. Just follow the directions and it is easy to put on!! They are with the other crib guards at Babies R US! R.

Here's a website for a padded-fabric crib rail cover that attaches with velcro -- or you could make one pretty easily if you sew.

can you lower the mattress any more?
I would not advise putting anything on the rails as she may get it in her eyes....
They sell netting that fits over cribs for kiddos that crawl out-- maybe putting something like that on will shy her away from chewing on the rails. Try using baby oral-gel sounds like she is teeting along with cool chew toys.
the towel thing sounds good too.
When my little boy would do that i would tap is nose and tell him NO BITE! good luck

What about a crib tent? It is a mesh material and will go inside your crib and under your mattress. This will prevent her from chewing on the railings.

Have you tried the chew toys that you can put in the refrigerator and keep cold?
Then when you give it to her it is cold and it can help with teething. Our kids liked those, that might help in the crib, they are rings, so she can't choke on them.

I would get a teething bear, they have these bears that have rubbery type feet/hands, so kids can chew on them while they are teething. She could have that in her bed and chew on it and it will be safe for her.

Hope this helps, good luck

My son did the same thing. We have a wide crib railing which didn't fit the standard crib guards so I used zip ties and secured a towel around the rail with them. It has worked so far, but doesn't look very attractive. good luck. hd

We saw some adhesive crib railguards at Babies R Us by the bedding the other day. To cover a whole crib was pricey, but it would work great for an odd shaped crib.

We have one of the newer cribs with large rails and couldn't find anything to fit. We bought the Gummi Rail from Babies R Us. It worked perfectly.

Is your baby teething, or does she already have teeth? If she is teething, she could just be trying to find something firm to chew on to help her cut her gums and relieve the pressure of the teeth coming through the gums. My oldest chewed on everything and my infant is doing the same thing now. We used a toy that we purchased from Wal-mart to help them both out with their teething issues. There is a blue and yellow star you can get in the infant department that vibrates. When the infant puts the star in thier mouth and puts pressure with their gums, the entire star vibrates and kind of itches their gums. Maybe you could try getting a toy like that...and when you put the baby to bed, place the toy in the crib with her and when she wakes up she will see it. Maybe she will choose to chew on it as opposed to the crib.

My youngest did that too. I ended up putting in rail guard on the side he chews. Baby R Us has the silicon type that alreay has adhesive so it goes right on. Very easy to put in. He continued tp chew for a bit, but no more chip paint. =) He stopped shortly afterwards.

I think its best to get them out of the crib. You never know with this imported China stuff.

My daughter did the same thing. The only thing that I could find that would fit was something that I "converted". I took a plain crib bumper that I bought at Babies R Us. I cut it to fit around the edges that she was chewing. I did a basic stitch to close the open end. Then I used fleece "fringe" pieces that I had picked up at a fabric store (cheap and in a large bag...about 100 of them). I then wrapped the bumper over the crib and tied it tight, with a knot, using the fleece. Anytime I needed to clean it, all I had to do was cut the fleece and take it off, since I had plenty of fleece. It worked like a charm... and it only cost about $15. Certainly cheaper than any "rail guards" that didn't fit anyway.

Well it seems lots of moms didnt notice that you said you have seen crib guards but they dont fit your crib. I had the exact same problem!!!! I tried the gummie rails, the clip on guards that are supposed to fit any crib. What I finally ended up doing (since I couldnt find any that fit either) was getting some fleece and cutting it out 54 inches by 12 inches and then I cut slits in it and tied it to the bed rails and the sides (because he chewed on every side!). Its kind of like those blankets people make and tie the edges together. Anyway, now when he tries to chew on the rail he gets the fleece instead now so he just chews on that for a second but doesnt seem to like that so quits pretty quickly and there are no marks anymore!! It has been a great! I made sure to tie the slits in a knot very tight between each slat. Its not a danger at all. Good luck!

My 9mth old is doing the same thing because she is cutting teeth. I guess it's easier than a regular chewie since she can really bear down on it. I doubt since they are so young that we will be able to keep their mind off of the crib unless we take them out and distract them with other toys or such. There are tons of teething aids out there and good luck in finding something yours will be interested in. I haven't found one that she's interested in yet...unless you count the crib, my finger or my chin.
